Seahawks' woes grow ... Hasselbeck may not play

He suffered a hyperextended knee in last week's game against the Giants, and hasn't practiced all week.

Backup Seneca Wallace is hurt, too.

That leaves Charlie Frye as the likely starter against the Packers tomorrow.

Oy.

Shaun Alexander is finished in Seattle

The Seahawks, as expected, have released the 30-year-old running back, who is only slightly more than two years removed from a Super Bowl appearance.

Alexander was due to make $4.5 million in 2008. He was given an eight-year, $62 million contract in 2006, but wound up receiving only $18.8 million in base salaries and $13.5 million in signing bonus and other guarantees.

Last year, battling wrist and knee problems, Alexander ran for 716 yards in 13 games, his lowest rushing total since 2000.

Is there a future in Seattle for Shaun Alexander?

That's what Alexander wants to know. Which is why his agent, Jim Steiner, will talk with Seahawks executives about their plans for the veteran running back.

We were getting vibes weeks ago that the Seahawks were so concerned about a drop-off in Alexander's production that they were preparing to dump him overboard during the off-season. And nothing has changed that view, especially after the team has poured plenty of free agent dough into running backs Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett.

More evidence that Shaun Alexander might be toast

The Seahawks have signed Cowboys free agent running back Julius Jones, which represents further proof to us that the team is so concerned about Shaun Alexander's diminished production that they might be ready to pull the plug on him.

At the very least, they figure to restructure his contract.

At worst, they'll dump him outright.
