Bubble Boys

My friends often ask me, Tom, why are you such a dope? How did you get to be so ugly? Why in the world would Newsday hire you to cover the Giants?

Oh, wait, those are the questions you guys ask here. My friends ask me: What’s the biggest difference between the Jets and the Giants?

Well, today is a good example to answer that question. With sizzling heat, the Giants are moving their OTA workout to the bubble. I just found out (right after I slathered myself with sunscreen, unfortunately). Over in Hempstead, Mangini probably wouldn’t have given the players a break by moving the workout to the cooler confines. Not saying Coughlin is a wuss. Rather, I think it's significant that the coach understands what the players go through and realizes that more can be suffered than gained by working the guys outside. It's an OTA, a voluntary workout. I would imagine that if they were working outside today, a few of the volunteers might have rescinded their voluntude.

I’ll be back after lunch with a report from the workout. In the meantime, let me leave you with this topic for morning discussion: Which was the bigger sports surprise, the Giants beating the undefeated and heavily favored Patriots in SBXLII, or the undefeated and heavily favored Big Brown finishing last in the Belmont Stakes? The Patriots were heavy favs, but not in the 2-to-5 range that Big Brown left the gates at.

So which is it, Big Blue or Big Brown?

By the way, I know voluntude isn't really a word.

Unable to answer this question or otherwise draw apples to apples comparisons without knowing when the steroids were withdrawn from the Patriots' regimen.

Sad day in Giants land. Strahan has decided to retire.
