Carr in, Lorenzen (and others) out

As he walked out of the stadium following the final workout of the minicamp last month, I asked David Carr is he was confident he'd be with the team in Albany. "Oh yeah, definitely," he said.

Despite not exactly tearing it up in the minicamp, Carr will in fact be among the Giants battling for roster sports in training camp. The Giants announced several roster moves today, including the release of Jared Lorenzen, the popular if not puffy third-string QB.

That means that four players -- Carr, Manning, Wright and Woodson -- will compete for three QB roster spots this summer.

The other players waived or released were WR Todd Lowber, long snapper Nick Leeson, DT Brian Soi and OL Jacobs Hobbs. Hobbs was going to be a feel-good story this summer, a former SUNY Albany player practicing with the big boys at Albany. Scratch that story off my list of things to cover during training camp.

The Giants have 81 players, including their six unsigned draft picks. They'll have to make at least one more move before camp to get to 80.

Oh, and click below for a transcript of my chat with Carr. I was going to write it for the paper, but, you know, stuff happens.

Q: Obviously you're aware of the numbers at the quarterback position.

A: I’m just trying to get better as a player. All that other stuff I'm not too worried about. I’ve played long enough to realize that you cant do anything about that stuff.

Q: Do you feel like you've had enough of an opportunity to show what you can do?

A: Chris (Palmer, the Giants' QB coach) has seen me for a long time, he knows what I can do. This has been good work for me and I'm glad to get back here and get to working with him because he knows my mechanics probably, other than my dad, better than anybody else. It’s been good to get some work out here with him but he’s seen my work plenty of times.

Q: What was wrong with your mechanics?

A: I was out of whack. This is really the first time in the last couple years I’ve had someone actually work with it. Just trying to get down to it. I still feel like I haven’t begun to tap what I can do as far as playing, so I'm excited about it.

Q: But what was specifically out of whack?

A: It was just ball position, release, a lot of things, my feet. These three days have been good, the coaching sessions before this was good. Reps, I’m not really concerned about right now because I know how to play the game. It’s just about getting the ball coming off my hand right, and when that happens I won’t have a problem.

Q: Are you confident you'll be in Albany?

A: Oh yeah, definitely.

Getting Carr will prove to be another great move by the Giants front office should Eli miss any time due to an injury.

I am sure with the talent the Giants have on offense that Carr could step in and win games if needed.
