Bowens Tied Up

By Tom Rock

Here's the details on the Bowens signing -- three years with the potential to reach $8 million. The Jets were very aggressive in bringing him in. Dan Quinn must have really liked him (and thusly the Jets must really like Dan Quinn). Quinn was Bowens' position coach with the Dolphins.

Nice point about Kimo jumping back to NT, Jetorange, but there's also a long list of guys there with Sione Pouha coming back healthy, 325-pounder Keyonta Marshall, and I know the Jets liked what they saw from C.J. Mosley after he got the hang of things and found his way onto the field toward the end of the season.

Now that there are 50 or so bodies to compete for the front seven on defense (OK, a slight exaggeration), it seems unlikely that the Jets will draft anyone for those positions next month. The one position they have not addressed in FA is the secondary -- probably one of the easiest positions to fill in via the draft and one of the costliest to fill in via free agency. What would like to see happen on April 28?

Kimo was passed his prime last year. The Jets are just doing what is prudent...

Lets not confuse quantity with quality here. Even though the jets have assembled alot of bodies to compete for defensive line positions that should not preclude them from taking an emergent talent in next month's draft, especially at nose tackle. The Haynes and Wadsworth signings were low risk, high potential reward moves that should not affect any talent acquisition decisions. Even with Pouha, Mosley, Walker and Roberston (who would probably be better suited to end) the jets need to make sure they find a big bodied NT to shore up the run defense and keep blockers off of Vilma so he can return to his pro bowl form. If that player is available at any point in the draft the jets should make a move to get in a position to take him.

Ken, there ARE no NT's in the draft as DT is this year's weakest position. Certainly not in the sense of a 3-4 wide body. (Alan Branch will be long gone) So Jets will have to make do with what they have already even though none of them are truly a 3-4 Nose. We should look forward to more yards on the ground up the middle this year, unfortunately. They'll pick a Corner in the 1st and a guard in the 2nd. After that it's a flip of he coin and maybe they get a good player later like they did last year, Leon Washington, in the 4th. SuperBowl will have to wait for another year, alas

I know I may be in the minority on this, but really, who have the Jets signed this off-season that really has all that much value?

Darian Barnes, FB-- IMO, you can find a fullback without much trouble, especially when you consider their lack of importance. IMO, they are like kick returners; they are a dime a dozen and you can put just about anyone in there.

Thomas Jones, RB-- This is one move I did like this off-season. We finally have a legit #1.

Michael Haynes, Andre Wadsworth-- Do they really have any value or are there more of "Tangini's" projects that they hope pan out.

Kenyon Coleman-- To me, with what you gave him, you could have easily found comparable value through the draft.

David Bowens-- Probably my 2nd favorite signing this off-season.

With some of this money that was spent on players that aren't really all that much better than what we had on the roster, why wasn't the corner situation addressed? Does anyone really believe that a 1st round CB like Aaron Ross or someone of that nature is all of a sudden going to make our secondary that much better?

Let's hope "Tangini's" draft is good; for the amount of money the Jets had under the cap, quite honestly, I don't really believe they have spent it all that wisely.

Hey David lay off of the team they had a terrific year and held indianapolis down to three points, chicago down to 10 that they actually let get away, the only bad loss was to Buffalo and Jacksonville everbody else we beat! what more can you ask for!

Well Omar, I am sorry you feel that way. I just am not all that impressed with most of their moves. Even with all of their signings, defensive end is still not 100% shored up. You have HUGE "projects" like Michael Haynes and Andre Wadsworth; if Kenyon Coleman was so good, why weren't there more teams breaking the vault for him? IMO, the money that you used on him could have been used to work on the secondary, which by the way is still in need of a lot of work. Kimo and Bobby Hamilton are both 197 years old.

And let's face facts, sure the Jets won 10 games last year. But we got Tennessee in week 1 and Buffalo in week 3 on the road, at times when those teams were still going through some rebuilding. I dare say we play them after week 10 on the road, we lose both games.

Indianapolis, we played out our butts and still lost.

Let's face facts, the Jets aren't going to sneak up on people this year. I have always believed that going 10-6 last year and making a wild card was the WORST thing that could have happened to Eric Mangini and the NY Jets because now, fans and the NY Media are going to want a division title and 11 or 12 wins. And this team is not an 11 or 12 win team. When the Jets go 8-8 or something like that this year, see if Eric Mangini gets a free pass from the media and the fans. If what I just said comes true, you bank on a backlash from the NY Media and the fans!!! The honeymoon with Eric Mangini is over. Division titles and being a Super Bowl contender are what people want now.

Are the Jets that type of team?

I am not sure they are.

You like the Bowens and Jones move and disagree with Coleman. The others were for minimum veteran salaries so really do not count.

Instead of criticizing, tell us who you would have signed with the 5 million per they gave Coleman.

For the record I too think they overpaid for Coleman, but I can not critcize as I do not see another player I would have preferred. He is a big DE, if they are right and he is a legit starter he will be a bargain, all I can do is see if they were correct.

IMO you don't need to say IMO all the time. This is a blog, if it's not YO then whose is it?

Considering that the Jets are still under the cap I think they are in a great position to improve the team when it best suits them...perhaps next season. As David pointed out they are not ready now to compete for a Division title and perhaps management realizes this too. I think the fans and media in NY are smart enough to realize that if they have a tougher schedule the W/L will be harder to maintain or improve on.

I think going 10-6 is the best thing that could have happened to the Jets. They know what it takes to compete, they have a taste for winning, they will have no illusions about themselves because they lost to better teams and even the Bills. Why would they want to have a bad record; so they can pretend to be better than they are the following year? That is the worst thing that could happen. Mangini made them overachieve without a running game in the first year with a new Defense. They will only get better even if their record isn't the same or better.

The Jets had a good season. The Jets could use a good corner but a shut down corner where every tean is looking for one is the most important but extremely hard to find. The DE's that the Jets sign are risky but not every DE will be superstars but there is a chance that they can be those superstars with those second chances. look at Sam Adams, Tony Siragusa, Sean Gilbert just to name a few who were bust but later turn good players.

david i agree with you that the Jets will not be sneaking up on anyone this year and the ny media will be holding them to a higher standard, even though last season they clearly benefited from a soft schedule that helped them finish 10-6 (along with the help of 3 other teams collapsing the last month of the season to allow them to make the playoffs).

do any of the offseason moves the team has made so far or the upcoming draft prospects help this team look like its going to take the next step to move deeper in the playoffs? not really. but i actually think this team might win 11 or 12 games for the following reasons:

first of all - continuity. all the key players will be returning for a second year in what was last year new offensive and defensive schemes. the players have all bought in to their roles. there is a strong foundation laid and this is a significant intangible, which the players have acknowledged.

secondly, there are a lot of young players who are maturing with favorable upside like miller, coleman, and vilma on defense; and brick, mangold, washington, and smith on offense. there's no way to measure how much better the team will be but barring any unforeseen setbacks this will be a better team, maybe much better even with the existing talent they have.

and thirdly lets look at their competition for the coming year: within their division new england is really the only competition. buffalo is in a rebuilding stage losing players right and left, and miami has a new coach with an aging defense and a big question mark at quarterback. even new england has a reasonable question mark at running back, which was their bread and butter last year, especially against the Jets. 4 wins out of 6 in their division isnt unreasonable.

of the Jets home games next year (pittsburgh, cleveland, kansas city, giants, washington) is there any team the Jets are not better than and wont be favored with home field? and of the Jets away games (baltimore, cincinati, tennesse, philadelphia, dallas) is there any of them the Jets wont be competitive with and couldnt beat outright(with the exception of maybe baltimore, especially now that they have the jets dagger willis mcgahee).

I dont see any of the competition improving more than the Jets going into the coming season and i dont think most of them will have the foundation and stability of the Jets.

All in all i think the Jets could really win more games this year even without any major offseason moves, although the thomas jones trade should certainly help alot.

RJ, thanks for some perspective regarding the schedule. They do not play INDY and CHI this year, so the schedule, while deeper, does not have any must lose games.

Continuity is incredibly important, the Jets were struggling early last year just to understand the plays. They will come out firing on all cyclinders this year.

And the T Jones signing is huge. While he is not a top ten back he is a dependable every down back, something sorely lacking during the year long try outs of 2006.

Not going to the super bowl, but another wild card with perhaps a first round playoff win is very likely. Progress.

The media will look for more, but he fans will understand.

Any move that means Hank Poteat is no more than the nickel back is a positive. If he is the best we have to start opposite Dyson, we better get a pass rush from all these DE's they've signed.

the jets are not gonna go like 4 and 12. just because the jets have a harder schedule and r playin a little better teams doesnt mean they are gonna have a bad record. they made the playoffs last year and r a team on the rise that could compete with almost any team. they need a better pass rush and need another cornerback.
