The short leash

By Tom Rock

Apparently Pennington doesn't have to be perfect to keep playing. He just called heads for the opening toss. It was tails. And Mangini still stands behind him.

Wow that challenge flag by mangini took a while to get to the field, Pennington must have thrown it

Before the deluge of critiques start piling in, the game falling apart in the second half is not Pennington's fault. How anyone can think that changing the quarterback is going to equal great defense is beyond me. And that's only one of the systems contributing to today's breakdown. It's a team sport. Today's collapse was a cumulative effort.

As a lifelong Jets fan, and a Chad supporter, I can't help but ask for Clemens.

For everyone who thinks this isn't Chad's fault (and it ALL isn't), let me point out a few things.

1. Stats lie. Of Chad's 3 TD's, only 1 is relevant - the first strike to Coles. The others: a 1-yard pass to Coles that he took all the way after breaking 2 tackles, and a who-cares Hail Mary that was only completed because it bounced into Cotchery's hands.

2. How many of you REALLY thought Chad would lead a game-tying drive at the end? You know, the drive that ending with an interception? Yeah, that's what I thought.

3. Yes, Chad doesn't play defense, but he also can't get his team into the end zone, and if I remember the rules of football correctly, the winning team has to OUTSCORE the losing team. Chad - it's been a great ride, and I respect the hell out of you, but it's time to see what the next guy can do.
