The Liar's Club

Peter King’s Monday Morning Quarterback is always, in-season or out, a must-read, with today’s being no different. King has the Jets taking Darren McFadden in his latest mock draft – our preferred mock draft, of course, remains Bob Glauber’s – and remaining interested in Matt Ryan. But perhaps the most illuminating part of the story was this comment, made to San Diego Union-Tribune columnist Nick Canepa, by Chargers’ General Manager A.J. Smith:

“You know I'm not a liar,” Smith said in the column. “But, forgive me, it's April. If there's a GM who tells the truth during the month of April, he's making a mistake. April . . . I've always called it Liar's Month. All GMs should be forgiven in April. Please, do not judge any GM in April. Lying simply is part of our business in April.”

Candor. Nice.

Later in the column, Smith says, “All these mock drafts, they take on a life of their own, and that's fine. It all makes sense – until April, because then, it just doesn't work. Everybody knows who the best players are. They're just going to get the teams wrong. Every team would like to have the top players. They just can't have them.”

This isn’t a mock of the mock drafts; they serve their purpose, but just keep them in perspective as no more or no less the discussion-generating avenues that they are. Two weeks ago most of them had the Jets taking Vernon Gholston, last week it was Darren McFadden and the updated ones now seem split between McFadden and Chris Long. Come Saturday don’t be surprised if none of those players ends up a New York Jet. McFadden remains the choice here.

Smith's remarks also may shed some light on the Dolphins Jeff Ireland making that supposed slip of the tongue comment last week. "You hope that he's a pillar of your defense for a long time," Ireland said, sending everyone in a 'He just gave away their draft plans!' tizzy.

Of course, word comes today the Dolphins are nearing a deal with Jake Long. And that will hold people over until tomorrow when they are suddenly far apart. And so on...

"Apr 20 Erik Boland, of Newsday, reports the New York Jets are discussing the possibility of keeping DL Dewayne Robertson and moving him to the outside. The team would have to restructure Robertson's contract if they want to keep him."

What's with this? Reported? Where? Yahoo Sports say you da' inside man, Erik... so what's the digs? You've just done all this in a complex, maniacal scheme to drive me insane, haven't you?
