« About that Woodhead story, and other things unrelated | Main | A Baker bit »

Whose week has been worse to this point: Barack Obama's, Buzz Bissinger's or Roger Clemens'?

Just asking.

In case you missed it, former Jets coach Lou Holtz made this year’s College Football Hall of Fame class, a deserved honor that assuredly would not have happened had he succeeded in New York.

He, as everyone knows, did not.

Holtz, when he resigned as Jets coach on Dec. 9, 1976 with a 3-10 record and one game remaining in his first, and only, season: “God did not put Lou Holtz on this earth to coach in the pros.”

Or to write songs. Holtz tried his hand at this, penning a Jets fight song to the tune of the military march “The Caissons Go Rolling Along,'” which began, all together now, “Win the game, fight like men, we’re together win or lose, New York Jets go rolling along.”

The line for more Holtz memories forms here.

So moving on - quickly - coming Friday and Saturday here will be reports from the Jets rookie minicamp. The media's access is limited to 85 minutes over the two days - 45 minutes Friday, 40 on Saturday - meaning the specifics on what the Jets are working on while the press is there will likely be very non-specific. Could be a lot of "Vernon Gholston appears to be fast and is chiseled," and "Dustin Keller and Erik Ainge are playing catch." We'll do our best. But not Neil Best, our sports media reporter, who today is putting up some Danny Woodhead-like blogging numbers that, frankly, leave me a bit shaken.

Speaking of Woodhead, finally, that story runs Friday in the paper, and at some point a bit more on Ainge, from someone who knows as much about quarterbacks as anyone.

Jets beat writer Erik Boland will be on Long Island's Sports Talk radio show tonight at 9:15PM on LI's 90.3FM.

If you're not in the listening area, pick up the interview later tonight at http://hosted.filefront.com/patchyfogg

Thanks!

Erik I have to tell you I really enjoy your blogs. I read your work every day but rarely respond. I just wanted to give a shout out. Good stuff!! I am a big NYJ fan and I enjoy getting the facts and the fun stuff too.

agree with Ed, you're off to a great start Erik

and good riddance to T-rock (by the way, can you give yourself your own nickname?)

Hey Erik,

What's the latest word on Chris Baker's contract situation? I was listening to Sirius NFL radio earlier and he was on. His side of the story makes it sound like the team made him a promise that they haven't kept. Do you see this getting resolved? Despite drafting Keller we still need Baker in my opinion.

Tom Rock was outstanding to read! Erik I'm still getting adjusted to your style, but I bet your easier to follow in person? In the end of the day, though, it's about the content. I'm here because I'm a life long Jet fan and I want as much info and opinions about my team as possible.

I like Erik's writing a lot more than T-Rock...he incorporates more than just secondhand Jets information and he seems to have a genuine interest in writing a good blog. I'm kind of getting tired of hearing people bash him for incorporating outside material.

Different strokes for...

I enjoy both writers as each one has their own areas where they shine.

You guys lay off my buddy, Boland! ; )

Speakin' of which... hey Boland, you ever gonna do that story on Ainge or what? This ain't 10th grade English class, mister. Move it or lose it.

Agree with everyone who says E-Bola is a great improvement over the the former beat writer.
