Oh, to be a celebrity judge at Flight Crew tryouts

flight3.jpg

But I'm not. Because of a handful of media appearances Marc Ecko, one of the celebrity judges, had to do, we're just getting started with the afternoon portion of today's program.

Ecko, in one television interview he gave earlier today, hinted at what the new Flight Crew uniforms will look like. He mentioned "Jets" and how thoughts of air travel came to mind.

So in designing the uniforms, at the forefront of his mind was flying and, "the stewardesses and the fantasy......" Um, and that concludes the Ecko portion of the program.

One great thing, though, about Ecko, who grew up in the 80's: in his spacious top-floor office - I'm told he has a basketball court in his bottom-floor office - are several paintings with Star Wars' characters and themes. Also, standing in one corner of the office, is a life-size Stormtrooper. I know next to nothing - and that really means nothing - about Ecko's business, fashion, but the Star Wars stuff makes me an admirer.

I'm seated next to SNY's Jets reporter Steve Overmyer, who has not gotten any taller since I saw him last. I compared Overmyer to shortish Jets rookie Danny Woodhead a couple weeks ago but I think Woodhead might have him by an inch, maybe even two.

Lastly, our national NFL columnist Bob Glauber raked me over the coals on his blog earlier today, asking "What the hell has happened to our business?" The insinuation was that somehow what I'm doing here has nothing to do with football.

He might be right but this critique, coming from the same guy who last week posted blog entries with the titles "Hey, hockey is a fun sport to watch!" and, my favorite, "My brother Mickey is a Rusty Chicken," is unacceptable. Plus, anything Jets-related technically falls under my purview as beat reporter.

All right, back to "the trenches" here [the photos, as before, courtesy of Jets team photographer Al Pereira]. There's a couple of Hofstra students trying to make the team, which would make for a nice local story. And for those more interested in football, don't worry, minicamp is next week so there will be plenty coming from there.

It's a rough job, Boland but somebody's gotta do it.

You're right Boland. I'll leave you alone now.

I know you have a mini-camp to prepare for.

Keep up the good work Erik! Don't listen to old, crotchety guys like Glauber who don't like change. I love your coverage of EVERYTHING Jets right now. What else are you supposed to write about in June?

Darrell, all about taking one for the team.

Big Joe, thanks, although Bob Glauber as crotchety? After laughing out loud when I read that description I must let you know he was joking. Bob picks on the newer NFL guys and we, on occasion, are allowed to pick on him in return. As for June and early July, that's for minicamps, contract negotiations, golf and dance team tryouts. I have a favorite after today.

You've just made this lifelong Giant's fan a Summer Fan of the Jets.

Love the click and enlarge technology.

Best is finished.

Now excuse me whilst I go practice ringing my flight attendant call button.

Islander505, we're happy to have you summering here at the very least. Only 364 days or so until next year's tryouts...
