ESPN Report: Jets talking Favre

Eric Mangini's press conference should be interesting. Less than 24 hours after he said the Jets were "happy" with who they have in camp quarterbacks-wise, ESPN just reported moments ago that the Jets have received permission to talk to Brett Favre. Don't jump at this quite yet, but things certainly do change quickly in this business, evidenced by the speed in which the Jason Taylor deal took place. Mangini shortly...

I would think the acquisition of Favre would end the open quarterback competition.

I'm not sure why anybody cared about those comments by Mangini. Most fans knew they didn't mean anything either way as to whether the Jets were interested in Favre

1) This office is very tightlipped and never shows their hand.
2) Even if a trade was in place for him, Mangini still says the exact same thing.

There was no reason to think those comments had any meaning.

OMFG!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it's about time! I was so confused that a Hall of Fame caliber quarterback available to a win-now team without a win-now quarterback was not being pursued...ok,it's not 17 years ago (and neither Chad nor Kellen are Browning Nagle) but c'mon...best qb available-go for it Jets!!!

Still the question begs to be asked, "Why?" Why give up anything for someone that has a good chance of being around for a very short time.

p.s. The ghost of A.J. Duhe resides in my house.

"Still the question begs to be asked, "Why?" Why give up anything for someone that has a good chance of being around for a very short time"

Why, because some of us fans want to win a championship. Because we went out and spent a lot of money on this team with players on the wrong side of their prime, they don't have a ton of time left. Penny cannot get this team to a SB. History shows you need a HOF level QB to win a championship. Favre gives us that chance to possibly be a threat. How about this team take a chance for once in their existance? Is that too much to ask? Throw it all out of on the table, go all in.

And while I still see no chance of beating Brady and the Pats. What if Brady get injured? What if Manning goes down? Things are possible, and if you have a chance to take a shot, you do it. Finding a great QB is probably the hardest thing to find in all of pro sports, and its by far the most important position.

Ain't gonna happen, ladies and gents

"Ain't gonna happen, ladies and gents"

And why is that?

I hope they pass on this deal a 39 year old QB is to old. To get 1 year out of him would be a waste.

The odds of the 38 year old breaking down or getting injured are far greater than either Brady or Manning losing significant time during the season. What happens is Favre does get injured? What have you given up for him? How far have you set us back again!

I think it is too risky a proposition and would cause way more drama than necessary for this team. I understand wanting to win and win now sentiment but I would rather do it with someone that was guaranteed to be around for more than one season.

p.s. Bernie Kosar keeps me up at night.

"What have you given up for him? How far have you set us back again!"

There are rumors a 2nd rounder would work. You're telling me if we had given up Keller for Favre (and Keller was a late first or very early 2nd), but if we gave up Keller this franchise is completely set back?

By the way, i'm assuming/hoping he would agree to 2 seasons before this goes down. Or if not, the compensation would be less.

As for the win now, you get it so I won't mention it. Except Boland seems to hate it, he says he's never heard of a win-later team. I'm sure he's just messing around as plenty of teams are built to win a championship, and a GM who doesn't realize his team is not built to win a championship but is building one for the future is totally legitimate and is smarter than a GM not realizing that he can't get it done right now.

Would you trust Favre's word even if he did say he would play for 2 years?

"Would you trust Favre's word even if he did say he would play for 2 years?"

Not necessarily. But I personally feel its unlikely he could come to a NEW team just for 1 season. Unless he played terrible that season.

New question, would you really be mad if this team for once in its existance put it all out on the table and went for it? All in?

Not at all. That is if it was the right person at the right time. I think this is the right person, just not the right time.

p.s. I once interviewed Richard Todd for Kidsday when I was in the 5th grade. When we asked him if he could be any other player in the NFL who would he be he answered, "A white Wesley Walker."

The phrase "According to Chris Mortenson" should cause concern regarding reliability and accuracy of this report.

Do the Jets trade Chad if this deal somehow happens?

So the braintrust that passed on Leinert and every other first round QB so we could get DBrick at #4 will somehow magically utilize Brett Favre. If this team was coming off even an 8-8 season, Brett Favre makes sense. The team was 4-12 last year and had no major injuries to boot. The Pete Kendall issue was a distraction, but he was worth 6 games in the standings.

Face it, this is a poorly coached team with no idea about how to succeed at this level. Just last week, Mangini was saying how he explains his "vision" to Woody Johnson, implying that there is some kind of long range plan in place. How does trading a 2d rounder for Favre fit in that "vision".

I cannot believe that anyone thinks this is a "win now" team. With Favre, you're maybe at 8-8. They are not better than either the Bills or the Pats and now that Parcells is running the Fish, they are not two easy wins anymore. The best thing that could happen to this team long range is a total flame out and get Bill Cowher in here next year.

IF ITS GOING TO HAPPEN IT WILL HAPPEN SOON..TWO WEEKS AT MOST.

As a longtime Jets fan, I would welcome Favre. He would make the Jets a HUGE national story every week and with the other guys they picked up in the offseason, this move would complete a total makeover for this team from last year. They could easily go from 4-12 to a possible playoff team even without Favre if the offseason moves work out as expected. Having Favre over the weak QBs we were trotting out there before, this team could really be formidable. Would anyone seriously care if Favre only lasted for a year or two if he was able to take the Jets deep into the playoffs and possibly to a Superbowl? Chad and Kellen certainly aren't doing that anytime soon. Chad never will and the jury is out still on whether Kellen will develop into more than a backup.

IMO this team is MUCH improved over last year...we havent lost too many key players, although im sure vilma will be missed on defense, but the offensive line last year which wasnt overpowering last year has been dramatically improved and i think we are looking at at least a decent year for the jets...if they get favre on the other hand, that does so much more for this football team... not only does it open up the running game by forcing them to cover deeper throws, but it also puts pressure on the other teams offense
