« A few words from Keller | Main | Baker placed on Jets PUP list »

For the chattering masses, Part II

With the Jets scheduled to open training camp Thursday, we’ll be doing another live chat this Wednesday at 1 p.m. Same format as last week’s chat: A moderator from Newsday will feed questions to me and I'll attempt to answer them from the World’s Most Famous Futon. I know many of you didn't get through last week when we did this, so I'll try to keep my answers less long-winded in order to get more questions in, but I make no promises.

Nothing at this point on Monday morning to report on the Vernon Gholston negotiations but with Dustin Keller’s signing Friday afternoon, that gives the Jets three full days to concentrate on get something done with their top draft pick and they’re expected to. News to come there as it develops.

Completely unrelated, when the Jason Taylor trade came down yesterday, I was reminded of an exchange between Rich Cimini of the Daily News and coach Eric Mangini after one of May’s OTA practices. This was when Bill Parcells was upset that ABC was dancing with one of his stars, so Rich asked Mangini how he would feel if one of his top players participated in such a competition.

“Having such a passion for ballroom dancing like I do…” Mangini said with a grin. “I’ve watched some of that, He (Taylor) is pretty good. He’s impressive. I didn’t vote but I thought he did a great job, and the longer he wants to stay out of Miami’s camp, I think he should.”

Now Taylor is out of Miami’s camp for good, and for this year, Mangini and the Jets will only have to worry about Taylor on Aug. 16 - their second preseason game - instead of Weeks 1 and 17.

That's right, Boland. I'll let all of you know when it happens.

; )

Darrell, your league sources are the envy of even the likes of John Clayton and Peter King...
:)
I have a haircut appointment in a little bit so please hold the fort down for me.

Erik, Get the Weeb Eubank Special at Supercuts. It's a fine haircut and i hear it'll help with the ladies.

As far as JT goes, I always remember Jason Taylor fondly, like that evening long ago where he was taunting Jets fans. Laughing and making jokes about fans leaving early, and saying, "there's no way they're coming back from this." Thanks for cherry on the top on the Monday Night Miracle, Jason. Now if we can convince Tom Brady to audition for America's Top Model we'll Sh**ting in the tall cotton.

Boland, you should try and double the amount of time at least. I think last chat was less than an hour? I'm expecting 2 hours this team, ESPN chat guys are doing 8 hour chats and such. Step it up!!!

I remember the time Taylor was mocking Curtis Martin in the press saying he was a nobody, and Curtis burned them for like 140 yards the following weekend. I'll miss the swell dancing and the comedic element. Shame we can't get Parcells out of the AFC east that easy.

dmb anything over an hour is considered work to Erik, you don't want him tired before training camp opens :)

Erik,
With the hate that Taylor has for the Jets he still gets to hear the J-E-T-S Jets,Jets,Jet, chant on 8/16 when the Skins come to town.Enjoy the haircut and and nice round of golf yesterday.

Good riddance to Jason Taylor. I can now only hope that the Redskins go 1-15, so that he can suffer as much as he did last year.

Once again Parcells shows his smarts. He knows that by the time a player reaches 35 his twist moves are gone, he's lost a step on his tango. And the lambada-- fuhgeddaboudit!

Nice play by Bill to get decent draft picks for an aging Vet. He's rebuilding so why not remove a disgruntled player and stockpile picks for next year. Getting excited.

FYI, Shockey traded to Saints for a 2nd and 5th

dmb, I think I did 55 minutes, which rounded up equals.....nevermind. Anyway, to be serious I don't have a lot of control on that. I'm given a time when I'm doing a live chat (1-2, 2-3 or whatever) and I sign onto a Web site and do it. Besides, you got two questions in, right? Maybe I'll see if I can do a massive two-hour one before Game 1.

JayM, anything approaching a HALF hour counts as work for me...

Ira, just heard you on WFAN in the car a little bit ago. Some very good points.

RC Meany, JETVET and everyone else who has weighed in on this: how about the Giants getting second and fifth-round draft picks next season for Shockey? You guys would all take that, I'm guessing, for Baker.

TAKE IT???
I would be doing cartwheels on the hofstra practice field for that deal.

BTW Erik maybe you can get 1 of the girls from the Flight crew to feed you grapes while you sit on your futon answering questions during the chat

Shockey traded to Saints for 2009 2nd & 5th, but if Vilma performs and Saints resign him, I believe the Jets were to forfeit their 2009 4th rd. pick for the Saints 2009 2nd in order to complete that deal...any clarification would help.

Just got a text NY Jets.com. Baker was placed on the PUP list.

The compensation in the Jon Vilma trade to the Saints has been widely reported inaccurately. Here’s the real deal: The Jets will receive a fourth-round pick from the Saints in the upcoming draft. If Vilma achieves playing-time incentives and signs an extension with the Saints, the Jets would receive a second- or third-round pick in 2009. In that case, the Jets would send their fourth-rounder in ‘09 to the Saints so they could recoup this year’s fourth rounder.

Baker, Trusnik placed on PUP

The New York Jets have announced that TE Chris Baker and LB Jason Trusnik have been placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list

The Patriots announced the signing of free agent offensive lineman Anthony Clement (11th year)

erik, i have a question on the shockey trade details as it may impact the jets. it was my understanding that the jets-saints trade involving vilma had a conditional 2009 pick that could be a 2nd or 3rd based on vilma's PT and whether he re-signed with the saints. either you or tom (not sure who was on the jets beat then) reported it that way

http://blogs.trb.com/sports/football/jets/blog/2008/02/vilmas_true_worth.html

so how can the saints trade the 2009 2nd rounder to the giants when they may owe that pick to the jets?

Hello Erik:

My friend told me to look at your blog since you actually respond to questions from us. I see some familiar names. Thank you for answering the questions we submit and for giving your opinions in a positive way.

I'm looking forward to training camp this week. I've gone there a few times since Herman Edwards was the coach. The workouts are neat and I also like seeing the new line of caps and t-shirts. Too bad the Jets are moving. Keep up the good work.

Bah. Humbug!

Thanks, Myra (and to your friend, too!) And welcome.

And RC Meany, I sense you're still PO'd about the news of the Vilma trade likely not producing a second-rounder...
