A thought or two or 10 from tonight's game
My thanks to Newsday’s Chris Mascaro for keeping the live blog of tonight’s game in this space entertaining and interesting. Now get out.
The Jets are off Sunday AND Monday so we'll have ample time here in the next couple days to go through the sights, sounds and scenes from the Meadowlands tonight. A few things:
* What wasn't to like about Favre? He went 5-for-6 for 48 yards and Dustin Keller raved about the speed with which that four-yard touchdown pass arrived. The throw to Jerricho Cotchery on the run for 19 yards three plays before that was a beauty. Obviously, you don't get carried away about 5-for-6, but considering, as Favre said, "Ten days ago I was doing yard work," Jets fans should be enthusiastic about next Saturday against the Giants.
* No limits on Keller. A reader asked me in the comments section a couple days ago whether Keller would get a chance down by the goal line because he's not a traditional bulky tight end. We saw tonight he's still an advantage down there. On his four-yard touchdown pass, Keller completely lost Redskins linebacker Rocky McIntosh on the quick down and out route he ran. Keller also hauled in a 22-yarder from Brett Ratliff in the third quarter, a play down the sideline we've seen 100 times in camp. Ok, not quite 100 but you get the idea.
* Hello, Kareem Brown and Kenwin Cummings. The defensive linemen, who both stood out at various times last week in practice, tied for the team lead in tackles with six each. And a day after I wrote in our live chat the linebacker Cody Spencer had almost no chance at making this team, he registered two sacks. Still a long shot for Spencer but nights like this give him a shot.
* I watched Vernon Gholston get completely stood up by Redskins left tackle Chris Samuels in the first quarter, but Gholston did make a couple of plays. In the second quarter Gholston chased down Rock Cartwright near the sideline and held him to a two-yard pick up, and on the next play he dropped back into coverage and shoved Mike Sellers out of bounds after the fullback made the catch for just a two-yard gain. A great night? Far from it but not a non-existent one either.
* Another good game from rookie cornerback Dwight Lowery, who had five tackles - second-most on the team - but more significantly, was in the game on the Jets second series. Could be this year's Revis. And I’m starting to think he might start opposite him.
* Nice game from Jesse Chatman, who missed much of the first week and a half of training camp. He had 11 rushes for 45 yards tonight and caught one pass for six yards.
* Kellen Clemens must throw like Tim Wakefield. He by far sees the most dropped passes in practice and he was victimized by four drops tonight. Two of those balls would have been for first-down yardage. That said, Ratliff gave the team a chance to win at the end. That battle for No. 2 might have just become neck-in-neck.
* Mangini could barely contain his disgust with Mike Nugent for missing that 23-yarder that would have sent the game to overtime. The fact no one booed - or no one I could hear anyway - when the ball hit the left upright tells you how desperate people were for the game to end. But Mangini, correctly, is fast-forwarding to the sure-to-be close games his team will be playing this year and hoping he doesn't have a kicking problem on his hands.
"Missed field goal to win the game from the five-yard line," Mangini said, momentarily lapsing on what the score was at the time of the miss. "You've got to be able to execute that play. That's standard operating procedure. I thought we'd go to overtime. I'm disappointed."
* And as you can see my “few things” turned into a longer post than expected. I’m virtually alone – aren’t I always – in the press box now, and Jets PR chief Bruce Speight just commented from upstairs, “We’re not writing War and Peace here.”
I deserved that. Goodnight.

Is this guy Kenwin Cummings for real?
He looked good last week but this week,
when he was on the field with Gholston, he definitely
outplayed him.
last one in the Press Box tonite? not like you have anywhere to be at 7:15am????
we'll make sure the coffee is hot...
I was really disappointed in our run defense (it was atrocious), but our secondary was very impressive and its impossible not to get excited about favre's performance. The two most important moments for me in terms of Favre were his first pass and the brad smith play. The first pass wasn't flashy, but it was a bullet and it shocked me a little. I mean we all know Favre throws hard, but I haven't ever seen a jets qb throw like that. It also from the get go showed that he truly has developed something with cotchery (who I snagged on my fantasy team). From the very get go it showed that there is a chance for Favre to deliver on his promise and that for the first time in a long time I felt confident in the jets ability to move the ball. With the brad smith run, it was important because he was using a play that he probably didn't have in his old playbook, it was the only non typical play, and he sold it absolutely perfectly.
I was also happy with Keller who after all these reports of him having a stellar camp kind of disappointed me last game. One of our biggest problems last year was getting open in the endzone and it looks like we're going to have a nice target this year.
I was actually very impressed with vernon gholston. Yes, he did make a lot of mistakes, but they were rookie errors. Remember he's a rookie who hasn't been at camp much longer than Favre and not only is he at his first nfl camp ever, he's learning a whole new position. There were always going to be growing pains. Erik Boland himself told us to expect for him to come in and make big contributions later in the year a la david harris last year. I'm fine entering the season with pace and thomas as our starters and gholston getting time as a backup and eventually transitioning to a starting role. He showed me tonight (definitively for me) that he actually has what it takes to become a starting OLB in this league. It's just going to take some time. I was worried about him being overrated and adjusting to the role, but I see now that he can adjust to that, but it's going to be just that na adjustment. Have patience, my fellow jets fans.
Also, Wallace Wright proved he is an indispensable member of this team. I doubt he'll see much if any time at WR, but he's got a motor and really makes our special teams something to be proud of. Every time we kick the ball he seems to be there right away in just the right spot to make the tackle. In our first year in a long time without our Westhoff this is especially important.
Raymond will not and cannot make this team.
Nuge scares me
So does our back up lines.
Ihedigbo is waaaaaaaay too hit or miss. He has a habit of making game changing plays ... for better or for worse.
I hope Clowney isn't too hurt and he can get right back in there. He's become a personal favorite and he just keeps looking better and better.
Marcus Henry who seemed in many ways to be an odd man out in the receiving corps made his presence felt big time. He really is a big target and if he learns to get into position like that against starting defenses we've got ourselves another major target to be looking at.
Kellen Clemens either throws the most uncatchable ball in the world, has absolutely no chemistry with his receivers, or he's the unluckiest guy in the world. The dropped balls were a problem last year, but I gave him a break. He was the backup - he hadn't developed a rhythm with the starting wide receivers and besides they were used to catching lops from Pennington, Kellen's throws must be way harder, its an adjustment. Now he's practiced with these guys all training camp and they have no trouble holding onto Favre's passes. So what's the problem. I've been a huge Clemens supporter, but some one needs to figure out what's wrong with his passes. Until then I can't not support Ratliff for the #2 spot. He's given us great performance after great performance. Sure, he's going against 3rd stringers, but he's still making great throws, hitting his receivers in just the right spot, making the right reads, and getting the right plays called. He's making it happen. Clemens has some catching up to do.
Barrett needs to go. I always think that dmb is way too hard on him, but after tonight there's no more doubting it. He made too many costly errors and he was outclassed not only by justin miller, but by dwight lowery. Barrett is this year's Justin McCairens. A guy who is talented, but never quite achieves up to those talents, makes way too many mistakes, has overstayed his welcome having never truly been good enough on this team, but getting by on his talents and some one whose mistakes are likely to cost us a game or two.
Damn, Jesse Chatman! He blew me away. When we first got him I was wondering why we had added yet another RB. He looked better than TJ (even if he could crush a moose in his biceps - and i'm pretty sure he could) and Leon combined.
Overall I'm excited for this season. Our starters were definitely better than washington's. Our offense looks like it can move the ball. The only question marks remaining revolve around the run offense, the run defense, exactly how the depth chart will shake out, and mike nugent. That seems like a lot, but that's significantly less than before. I feel good about this team and I'm excited for this year. I'm not getting carried away by one exhibition game, i'm just looking for clues that hint at future successes and failures.
I'm terribly sorry for this post, but I needed to vent somewhere.
Marty, not ready to go totally crazy on Cummings yet but that was a standout game last night. Another one against the Giants might get him on the roster.
PC Richard, had no idea you read this blog......I'm flattered, if not unnerved.....yet still flattered.
Neil, no problem! There are no limits in cyberspace, as I continually take advantage of.
I do believe we cut the wrong Quarterback
I am worried about the kicking game, this can break a good team.
Don't know what the deal with Clemens is. Maybe he doesn't have any touch on his passes. He has had time to click with his receivers. Before # 4 got hear he shared reps with CP working with the 1st team. When I watch him, I don't get any feeling that he could eventualy be an effective starter, and that goes back to last season also.
Any thought that they might bring in some kicking competition? Nugent is starting to look like the Pennington of kickers.
Erik, as always your efforts, and an apparent lack of a personal life, are greatlty appreciated. Loved seeing Keller in the red zone. Favre looked good, hopefully just a sign of things to come. And not to worry, keep up the good work, and I'm sure you'll have your choice of the Jets Flight Crew come season end.
I know it is very early in the kids career to make a judgment, but why is Gholston starting to worry me in being a project that may never pan out. When he lined up in a 3 point stance rushing the QB, as soon as the OLineman got in front of him he looked like he gave up with no effort to get around him. I saw more from the second team DLinemen trying to get to the QB than I did from him. For the 6th pick in the draft I would expect someone with a motor, but I don't see it from him. All you fans of Gholston can call me crazy and it is still early and he is learning the system that is fine. Right now I don't see it in him and I hope I am very wrong on this. Just my opinion.
EB now for you, can you ask Mangini, why it is so hard to catch a Clemens pass? And what is the problem? All those drops last night were right on the numbers facing the QB. There were just so many that there is a problem there. It happened last year too.
EB let me THANK YOU for the good work you are doing to keep us informed.
Yeah, Erik, it seems redundant when you've got the Jets interns walking around telling people how hard you work, but you're doing a great job here. Now if you just start kissing up to the Dolans you might be in line for that News 12 spot.
I just got home from work, what'd I miss? Thank god for Tivo! Erik, you're not hanging out late just so you could bump into the newest Jet hire are you?
On Farve's second drive with the starters we scored a TD! Great Job! Our starting defense caused the Redskins to go 3 and out on the skins first possesion. Amazing! Next defensive sequence some backups came in and we were in a good position to make the skins go 3 and out again; but after watching the game the second time i saw their RB Betts break outside around Gholston who was being held by the linemen preventing him from making the tackle. To me it looked like VG got held. Please take a look and let me know your thoughts guys and E. Boland on that play. To me VG did looked better and seemed to be in proper position. Next step is he needs to start playing without thinking about everything, needs to be instinctive.
E. Boland- do u think Lowery might start opposite Revis in our first game or just sometime down the road this year? Lowery did look good, always in the right position. Was in perfect position against Devin Thomas on that long ball, who was one of the top WR in this years draft. Only mistake i saw on his part last night was when he lost santana moss on that one play but eric smith covered up that mistake by forcing moss out of bounds before moss got both feet down in the 1st quarter.
Now my biggest fear for this season has become Nugent! He has been so up and down over the years since we drafted him. We drafted him high for a kicker, believe in the 2nd round, and he has not lived up to where we drafted him. U need a solid FG kicker to win those close games!
Impressive showing by Farve, but it was only a few throws in presason and a lot more, especially concerning his stamina will have to be shown before I jump on the bandwagon. I didnt expect anything less from him with only a couple of throws in a preseason game, but it looks good so far. Lets not get silly with the Kool-aid just yet.
The run D is weak and the oline while better ,still is not close to dominating. We are much better in pass protection ,but our RBs are still stopped in their tracks too many times.
KC, you still cant judge b/c he is playing behind a 5 stooges oline.
BR looks like the real deal , but also has alot more proving to do against top competition as in against the starters. He has a gun and shows great command.
After next weeks game, I will give my final prediction for the 08 season. This year is a little more challenging than other years, but for the last several years I have been dead on.
In any event, it will be an exciting year ! Go Jets !
Also in that last drive, why did they run a fade jump ball with david ball in the corner of the endzone when Marcus Henry was in and was doing a solid job on that drive. Henry is tall at 6'4" and thought that was exactly where they would use him when they drafted him! Redzone, corner of the endzone, Jump balls! That play should of been ran for Henry!
Ratliff looked great, and i would prefer him over clemens for the #2 QB. His throw was slightly behind Paul Raymond in the endzone, but was a catchable ball. Clemens should not be falling, tripping over feet 2X nor allowing 2 of his balls to be deflected at the line. Dont know what is up with his teammates not being able to hold on to his ball, but it seems like no one can catch his ball, this goes back to last year too. He cant be our QB if no one can catch his passes!
Couple of thoughts...
1. With the change in rules regarding force outs, I wonder if the alley oop play will really become a thng of the past....all the defender has to do now with the receiver in the air is push him out of bounds.....food for thought.
2. I thought it was idiotic in a freakin pre season game to try to force overtime...win the freakin game or lost it in regulation...what difference does it make...I also didn't think the snap on the field goal was all that good (question - did the Jets have the regular field goal team on the field??)...also five seconds left and they had a time out...time for two quick flips into the end zone to win the game. All that could have come out of overtime are silly injuries.
But the miss does give you thought for worry.
Couple of things here Boland:
1) I really think the Jets have a chance to have a special secondary this year, and that could be huge. They have two studs in Rhodes and Revis, and capable players in Miller and Smith. What really excites me is their depth, though. If you look at players like Dwight Lowery, Ahmad Carroll, Drew Coleman, and even (eesh) David Barrett, they are a very deep group. Combine this possible position of strength with the additions of Jenkins, Pace and Gholston up front and this defense should be much improved.
2) For all those that belly-ached about the Jets getting Favre and cutting Pennington, are you done? Look at what Favre did with only a week of practice under his belt. I loved Pennington, he was a great face for this franchise, but he was very limited in what he could do. Favre makes this team relevant, but most of all he makes them dangerous. Give him the rest of the preseason, a few weeks in the regular season, and all of us Jets fans will see him do things we haven't seen a New York Jets quarterback do since Glen Foley..just kidding.
And now I turn to you Boland..I understand Ratliff is going against second and third teamers, but it seems to me that this guy can play. He's got a great arm, seemingly instinctual pocket presence, and a nose for making big plays. Do you really think that we could see him surpass Clemens for the number two spot in the next few weeks?
Jeff, good post. I agree 100 %. Aside from the players, the season will come down to good coaching. Also, the role of the Kicker cant be taken lightly since most games are decided by only a few points . The kicking game is a concern , but I wouldnt panic yet.
Wow, Justin Miller is ATROCIOUS. He's giving Barrett a run for him money for worst CB on an NFL roster. I still don't get why our 2 worst CB's on the team, and possibly 2 worst in the NFL are competing for a starting job, when there are 3 CB's on the team better than both of them (not including Revis). Miller is essentially Barrett with athleticism.
Boland, I really wouldn't complain if you hook me up with a ticket to the Jets/Pats game on 9/14 to watch the game from the press box. I heard its a new newsday promotion, what do you think?
Bryan, Great point. Seems like sideline routes in general will easier to defend this year. Word to all CBs - the sideline is your friend.
There are 3 backup qbs over the last decade or so play against the jets in preseason games that really impressed me as future starting nfl qbs. Hasselback, with GB,
Dehlomme with NO and Simms with TB. The jury is definitely still out on the other Brett, but I get the same feeling when I watch him. Maybe we finally found a diamond in the rough.
Erik,
Do you know the latest on David Clowney? Does the shoulder injury appear to be serious?
Also, do you think there is a possibility that Revis and Lowery could be the week 1 starters at corner? I don't think there is much more they can do to try and hand Miller the job...which he doesn't seem to want.
Clowney's injury while not official yet could keep him out for several weeks. Henry finally showed me something and will make the team and be othe the roster because Clowney could be out for awhile. Pace seemd active as did K.Brown. Looks like the backup DE's will be DeVito and Brown.
Erik,
I agree with you Lowery will be starting CB opposite Revis maybe from week #1.Seeing Miller in until the start fo the 4th QT raised alot of questons for me. Either they were getting him reps or show casing him for a possible trade. Nugent's job is safe for now but i expect to see a kicker in this week for a workout. Maybe they call in Feely just to make Nugent think abit. graham had a good night. Once again Ratliff showed he has lots of potential. Would love to see him get some reps vs the Giants with the 1st string o-line. Barrett was playing way to far off form his man last night. They must find roster spots for right and Spencer. They are the two best cover guys on ST's they have. Murrell looks like a better speed rusher now then Gholston. Gholston is going to need time, GO JETS!!!!
Rich R., and Ira, yes, I've heard some kind of collar bone/shoulder injury but nothing official yet. Ira, you might be right on, that if Clowney is out a bit, Marcus Henry could benefit. We know it won't be Paul Raymond. Brutal, just brutal drop there at the end.
dmb, watching a game with you would be an indescribable experience I think. But there's no cheering in the press box. Could you handle not making a sound when/if Barrett gets beat?:)
Bryan, yes, absolutely Ratliff could be the No. 2 by the season-opener. Clemens, though, got no help - I mean NONE - last night from his receivers. That will be something followed up on Tuesday when we have access again. It is odd it only seems Clemens' passes get dropped. Or a significantly higher number of his at any rate.
Brad, I'm not ready to call Lowery the starter yet for the opener but we're rapidly headed there it seems.
Mr. Green T, from your lips to...well, you know the rest.
There's a reason drops follow Clemens like a snot-nosed younger brother. Two of the "drops" occurred when a Jets receiver had a defender draped over his back. Film might show he picked a poor option. On the other two "drops", he threw over the wrong shoulder. Yes, a professional receiver should be able to switch his momentum and make the catch but Clemens isn't making things easy on himself. Those "drops" seem to disappear with a quarterback change. Variable reduction seems to indicate who's to blame...
Boland, i'd wear a Barrett jersey, or at the least cheer him on the whole game. I'd even paint #36 on my cheeks.4
hell I'd show up a la Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder with Barret 36 on my back in white.
I doubt I'd be allowed in the press box. Sexually deviant comments are reprehensible at best in private, let alone amongst "professionals".
P.S. Tropic Thunder. Funny.
Almost as funny as Scott P making a full 180 turn from his stance as Favre hating, CP lover. What, Scott, did you see CP throwing lofters to Miami and realize that the trade helped us?
Erik,
I have to repectfully disagree with you about Spencer. He is their seond best ST coverage player behind Wright. While Murrell should make the team i wouldn't rule out Spencer just yet. Another strong preformance against the Giants and it will be tuff to cut him. Chatham i thought would never make this team but with Kassell out for the year they need another ILB. Problem
is Spencer and Murrell both play OLB. SDo do they go for the ST help or sacrifice that for the ST play potential of Murrell and Spencer? This week should clarify a few things.
Is it just me, or do the Jets have a lot of players who are going to be tough to cut? (Clemens aside)
I've never seen a camp with so many stand out third and fourth stringers.
The other nagging question I have ... Is that an indoor ski slope they're building at the Meadowlands? It's either that or the worlds biggest and most useless wheelchair ramp.
Comments:
Politics tells me they'll go with Chatham. Also, Ira, if we release him, it will bring us back to one of your favorite predictions--that is, "Watch out, the Pats will grab him in a second."
Speaking of politics--Ratliff is #2. KC is 3rd QB until proven otherwise. Give Brett Lite the reps and stop the fiasco. I can't believe Maungini was seriously selling us the idea that KC and CP were fighting it out to be our starting QB. If so, that just tells you how pathetic the situation was. Like Woody buying a yacht over the winter and asking Jay Cross to steer it.
Finally--Message to Laveranues: Shut up already! (Oh yeah, I forgot you're not talking.) Get over yourself. You're no longer by default the #! Jets news story this year. BF is here. He gets the ink. Your act about how shabbily the Jets treated Chad is tired. Who are you trying to kid? You're here for the money. Farve is your protection against more Pennington-induced concussions. Next year we'll be lucky if we can get a third round pick for you. Let's go.
"I've never seen a camp with so many stand out third and fourth stringers."
Yeah, this is more a problem of not having very good depth, and having a lot of guys who should be borderline cuts competing for depth. The quality of depth at LB and Dline are pretty bad in particular.
dmb, true about the dline and LBs, but the corners, receivers and RBs are pretty thick. And personally, I'd like to see Ainge take Clemen's reps, just to see what he can do. Clemens isn't doing anything with them anyway.
Also, it wouldn't surprise me to see another kicker in camp this week, if nothing else but to let Nugent know how tenuous his paycheck is. Feely's out there, as are a couple of others I'm sure.
We're sort of deep at WR. I mean on most teams Stuckey, Clowney, and Smith would be competing at the #4 spot, so the quality of our depth isn't that great. But yeah at RB we're deep, I hope Musa Smith gets cut.
I'm not sure I'd call us deep at CB. We have 2 of the worst CB's in the entire NFL and they're competing for a starting spot.
We also have Lowery and Carroll waiting to take their job, either of whom is better. Lighten up.
What do you mean, i'm not down on them. Not meaning to come off negative. I just think our depth is being overstated, we have a lot of competition which is good, but not because of quality.
Carroll and Lowery wouldn't be competing to start on most NFL teams (if any).
Until proven otherwise I am still very concerned with the running offense and defense.
Same story as last year so far.
Not worried about middle LB as much as the rest of you. Bowens has looked good when rotating inside and Kentwar ? has flashed.
Deepest position overall is LB, agree Spencer and Murrell look great but will probably lose on because of the Gholston pick.
Is it too late to trade him for one of the 10 OT's drafted in the first two rounds?
Would be much happier with this team right now with a big first round RT and Woody at G that I am with Gholston struggling to find his way.
Media, who all wanted him or McFadden (also lost), now seem shocked that the transition is moving so slowly. Not like every scouting report didnt mention that he struggled in coverage. Read them, they all did.
Who cares about Gholston in coverage. We didn't draft him to cover. Merriman struggles in coverage too.
Gholston has 6 tackles in his first 2 preseason games, he's learning a new position. The fact that most of you didn't expect a major learning curve is strange. Not sure why anyone is even talking about his struggles, as you should have expected as much so far.
Merriman had a total of 2 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 FF's, 0 anything else in his first 2 preseason games. The fact is, Gholston may be a total bust, but there's nothing about his first 2 preseason games that should lead anyone to believe that. Get a grip on reality guys.
They're NY fans, dmb, if it's not an isntant and fluid transition they're dead to them. A-Rod's first season, he got booed a lot. Second season, he was their friend and now he's back to getting booed.
Trust me when I say this, Gholston has the ability to be better than Merriman. Will he be? Time will tell...but the fact that he's got the agility and speed paired with the power is an incredible combination. All that's missing is the motivation to achieve Merriman status. I see it happening, let's just hope it kicks in around week 7.
Cliff, your puting keystrokes on my computer ! All I said is that Farve looked good with a handful of short throws in preseason and that I didnt expect anything less. I also indicated that he has to prove, his stamina and desire first.
Out of that , I dont know how you come up with that I am on the Farve Bandwagon.
I will give you that I am hopeful, but also very cautious for the many reasons that I have posted before.
Believe me , nothing would make me happier for Farve to light it up !
The run D and run offense still are a concern. If we cant win in the trenches Farve wont matter.
Next week is the closest game to the real thing. Hopefully many questions will be answered and we have our share of questions, but overall are still in better shape than last year thanks to the early FA acquisitions. How much better shape remains to be seen .
First my comment clearly indicates I DID expect a learning curve, I was criticizing the media for being surprised. Its not me that needs to get a grip on reality, I expected nothing from him the first year, its the media.
Second, my point is they should never have drafted him to begin with. With the signing of Favre this team is supposed to be built to win now. A big right offensive tackle drafted in the first round would contribute a lot more toward that goal this year than will Gholston, especially when it appears there are two pass rush specialist types on the roster already in Murrel and Spencer.
Perhaps by Week 7 he will start to contribute, but by then the season may be lost.
Good post Wayne 80, you bring up valid points.
"With the signing of Favre this team is supposed to be built to win now."
Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the Favre trade come months after the draft?
Anyway, this team has a capable enough RT in Woody. There's was no need to address Oline again with so many holes after signing 2 offensive linemen in the offseason before the draft.
We have no depth on the oline ! One starting guy goes down we are in trouble.
Our back ups looked like the 5 stooges ! They literally were running into each other !
I don't see the Oline depth as big an issue as the Dline. The Dline depth is MUCH more important, because injury or not the backups play a lot in a rotation. However, as long as an Olineman is healthy, he's playing every snap.
Yeah, if an Olineman goes down, depending on who it is, we're not in great shape (though not terrible, say if Montgomery has to replace Moore, it wouldn't be a huge deal). But you can say that about other things. If Tom Brady does down, that team is in huge trouble as well. But if we're assuming everyone is healthy, the Dline depth actually hurts us anyway. Whereas the Oline depth doesn't.
"Built to win now." Oh my God. Stop fooling yourselves people. The whole Favre thing won't get us to the Super Bowl. It is just a PR ploy to make desperate Jets fans giddy about an 11-5 eason followed with a 1st or 2nd round exit in teh playoffs the next year or 2 with no real plan to build a Super Bowl team.
And thank you Newday for giving the in depth look into my Jets team for my subscription - A daily page or 2 of Favre articles and analysis and then deep insight about the other players in the "Notes and quotes" section, such as : "Damien Woody OT (calf) did not practice yesterday." It's nice to see I had to hunt down a small blurb on a blog to read news on the 6th overall pick in the draft. Or wait, there's a whole article on Gholston in the Daily News!!!! I guess Newsday is too busy getting those memorable quotes like this one from Favre last week: "This will be fun."
What the heck happened?
