Some quickie stats from Green/White Practice

Have to pound out a few things for tomorrow's newspaper but here's a couple things from today's Green and White Practice, won by the Green Team, 10-7. Chad Pennington quarterbacked the Green Team and Kellen Clemens led the White. The practice was non-contact.

GREEN TEAM
Pennington: 8 for 14, 115 yards and a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery.
Cotchery: 4 receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown.

WHITE TEAM
Clemens: 8 for 22 137 yards and a 55-yard touchdown pass to Dustin Keller
Keller: 4 catches for 79 yards and that touchdown.
Washington: 3 receptions for 32 yards.

Back with more later. Oh, and no picks by either quarterback. And Mike Nugent made a 45-yard field goal for the Green team that made it 10-0 in the third quarter, then missed a 48-yarder in the fourth, also for the Green, that would have extended the lead to 13-7. It sailed wide right.

OH, PART II: Ben Graham, punting from the end zone in the second quarter, unloaded an 86-yard punt.

Feel free to discuss the quarterback play. Or Keller's general unstoppable-ness (not a word, so what). Or Cotchery. Or enjoy the rest of your Saturday afternoon/night.

Humorous sidenote of the afternoon: As the media was interviewing Chad Pennington afterward, some fans still in the bleachers began a "C-H-A-D" chant. One of the people doing the interviewing was WFAN's Jerry Recco, and toward the end of the interview people started chanting his name. I have absolutely nothing sarcastic to say about that whatsoever. But you just stay classy, Jerry Recco.

Also, the practice/game/scrimmage was broadcast on AM 1050 ESPN. If Bob Wischusen, the voice of the Jets and innumerable televised college football broadcasts, wished he was elsewhere, it didn't sound like it. A pro's pro for making a SCRIMMAGE more than listenable.

I know it is early, but it's looking like the Jets made a good move, by trading up to get this kid Keller. Say what you want about the Tangini connection, but they have had nothing but solid drafts so far. GO JETS!!! Can't wait to steam roll the Dolphins in week one.

any update when the hofstra tribute will be now

since the halftime show did not happen today

Hey Eric,

Any dropped passes? They seemed to really hurt KCs completion percentage last year.

Keller is Injured ...Sprained ACL prbly done for the season

BREAKING NEWS****KELLER OUT FOR SEASON****

Tony, chill, dude. Keller's left ankle was wrapped afterward. He stood and talked to the media for 15 minutes afterward and that was after signing autographs for some 20 minutes.

They didn't call Keller BadAss for nothing. He will be a force!

Erik,
You are right about Keller. No big deal he walked off the field. I told you this guy will be a 50 catch guy this year. Both defense outplayed both offenses. The secondary's looked good and Chad played better then Kellen.Revis' punt return was outstanding and so was Stuckey's. Lets see how they all play as one unit vs the Browns.

Jetsconfidential.com is reporting not a acl sprain , but indeed a BROKEN ANKLE for keller

Jets Te -Dustin Keller has Broken his ankle in two places likely out for season

To me this is just typicall jets the only thing we have to look foward to on offense and getting down the field is now done, Only the Jets

SackExchange--

I see nothing at Jetsconfidential.com.

Erik, is there any way to ban these clowns who keep posting false information with no corroboration?

Received my season tickets today!!!! Yeah! Then I read previous post about PSL's! BOOO!!!!!!

Anyways, I have to admit I'm not happy that neither team lit up the board with points. Is anyone else as concerned as I am that we still can't put up points?

Kudos to Tangini on the move up to get Keller!! He sounds like the real deal if he stays healthy. This has to be killing Baker. How did Franks do today?

Also, how do they have a scrimmage with no contact? Makes the running game useless. Did Coles get on the field or are they just letting him act like Buress so he's ready for prime time?

MAJOR QUESTION: Is our defense this much improved or our offense this sucky?

Thanks EB!

Sorry to double up here. One more question.

What's happened to Gholston (he's become a ghost)? I heard on Sirius radio he has had problems shedding his blockers. Is this true?

Thanks again.

DB, I guess with this blog getting more popular (so I've been told but who knows) that means trolls begin, well, trolling on here. Free speech is free speech but....well, let's see what happens. Clowns is a good description.

Mike from bumpass, Coles did not play, nor did David Harris and you're right about judging the running game since it amounted to touch football at the line, though Calvin Pace got in a backfield a couple times. Shaun Ellis, too, who is having a good camp. Bubba Franks, I had him for two catches for 10 yards; a 6-yarder and a 4-yarder. He was open about 20 yards down the middle on one play but Dwight Lowery had great coverage and deflected the ball.
Mike, on Gholston, I'm going to tell you right now and I've said this before here: he's unlearning all the things that he's done previously in his career when he was primarily a 4-3 down lineman. It's been a week! Let's allow his development to take place. Think of this: how great a camp was David Harris having at this time last year? He was ok but there was NO indication he would become what he did. I know Harris wasn't learning a new position, I'm just saying with rookie defenders, you can't get too carried away yet in making an evaluation. Especially a week in.
And the same on the offense. You asked if the offense is just that "sucky" (sure, I can write that) and I'd say at this point it is! But every NFL coach will tell you the defense is ahead at this time of year. It's a cliche for a reason.

And drgreenjeans, yes, a couple drops today. David Ball, David Clowney and Wallace Wright each had one. There were some finger-tip balls that were 50-50 on whether you could say the receiver "should" have caught it.

Agreed on free speech, E-Bola, and maybe I overreacted...but I must admit, my heart nearly jumped out of my chest when I read those two posts.

Seems to me that Clemens has been plagued by more drops than CP this camp and last season. Could it be that the receivers are still getting used to having more mustard on the ball when Clemens is throwing?

EB

Is there any reason why the recievers are having problems catching Clemens passes? This was a problem last year too, but he was throwing to the back up recievers last year.

BTW great reports on all the stuff you have posted, thanks.

Hey erik baby, i have a question cutie pie....i kno ur a browns fan but since ur covering the jets are starting to become more of a jet fan? Who is ur second favorite team? thanks darling

So Chad got to play with Cotchery, while Kellen gets the third string.

Erik, wondering who was playing with the first string OLINE?

OLine has the least depth of any unit, so whoever got stuck with the second string should have their performance graded with a handicap.

IF the receivers made their catches, KC's stats would be:

Clemens 11-22, 160? yards.

Assuming Chad had no drops, I say KC wins todays battle when coaches review the tape.

mike, Gholston couldn't shed blockers in college, so I doubt he can now

While I was totally fine with the Gholston pick, watching him in college he did one thing and one thing only, he used his speed and strength to just run straight to the QB, he didn't seem to have any pass rush moves whatsoever, but his superior athleticism and strength where what often let to him getting pressure or sacks. So as far as i'm concerned he's totally raw. He also totally gave up on run plays or plays that were away from where he was.

Unfortunately, in the NFL just raw talent by itself will not get it done in the vast majority of cases. College you can get away with it.

Lets hope he can supplement his raw athleticism with technique and knowledge or we have missed the mark again.

Way too early to evaluate him as he is in an entirely different ball game.

He has the foundation. He needs to develop the rest.

This is where the coaches earn their pay !

If you look at how Mario Williams was his rookie season, I wouldn't worry too much about Gholston. We got him for a pass rush, not to be a heady, wily LB. If he turns out that way, great. If not, just get us 12 sacks a year and I'm happy.

The big worry is Thomas. He needs to step it up and play to his potential. If he slacks at all in the first few games, he needs to get yanked and kicked in the cashews.

I've been up behind the enemy lines now for 15 years (NH, MA), and all the Patsies are squaking about a 14 win season. We need to take some wind out of their sails in week 2.

Diff between Williams and Gholston is Williams was a DE drafted to play DE in a 4-3, and still struggled in year one.

Gholston was a one dimensional pass rushing DE being asked to translate those skills to 3-4 LB.

But he seems to have a good mindset and be willing to work, so hopefully he can become a 3 down player by next season. Just don't expect too much this year, maybe 8 sacks as a situational rusher.

JayM, that's really hard to say. I'd like to think it's not something like that, but if it happens during the Cleveland game, then it's a question worth asking. Even though no receiver worth his salt would say the reason passes are being dropped is because the ball is coming in too hard.

Wayne, Pennington's O-line was the starting crew of Woody, Moore, Mangold, Faneca and Ferguson. Clemens had what amounts to the second team, which includes Montgomery, Hunter, Turner, Bender and McChesney.

By the way, a lot of people have asked about Calvin Pace. If you were at Saturday's scrimmage, you would have noticed him. Even in non-contact, he stood out as covering a lot of ground.

Jerry Recco!

Hey mike from bumpass,
I had the same sentiments upon opening my mail the other day, what a roller coaster!
And the offense is no power house. We upgraded from awful to OK. Why do you think I ask so many questions about our kicking game...field position and winning close games late will be the formula if we are going to have a winning season.
