Headed out to practice in a moment but Eric Mangini, in his press conference earlier, confirmed what most thought would happen: safety Eric Smith will appeal his fine/suspension.
Smith is going through the appeal process today and, Mangini said, a final decision from the league should come "either later today or tomorrow."
Mangini said if Smith's suspension is upheld, Jesse Chatman, who is returning from his four-game suspenion, would take Smith's roster spot for this week.

he got what he deserved and needs to man up and accept it
whatever, it's a man's game. even that bloated A$$bag Peter King said he didn't think it was a cheap shot
Erik, any word on Clowney? not like we need him at the moment, but curious. i really like Stuckey & wouldn't want to see him lose PT
Clowney was back at practice last week. If anything, he would eat into Brad Smith's playing time.
(the real) mike, I mention this in today's practice/locker roompost, but if you're seeing this first...Clowney is wearing the red non-contact jersey so I would say his return is still a couple weeks away.
Hey, Boland, I'm curious about whether you have detercted any consensus regarding Smith's hit on Boldin. It seems that the local media, for the most part, agrees that the hit was more the result of circumstances than an intent to injure, and that the penalty is excessive. Do you agree?
Beyond the local media, however, I'm wondering if there is any consensus regarding severity and punishment. The reason I ask is I read the following comment in an article by an AP sportswriter named Bob Baum about the Cards win yesterday over the Bills (Link: http://www.northjersey.com/sports/moresports/30503744.html)
"With Boldin out as a result of the vicious helmet-to-helmet hit by the Jets’ Eric Smith, replacement Steve Breaston caught seven passes for 77 yards."
Boland, do you believe the comment above is representative of the prevailing sentiment of the media, either local or otherwise? I wonder whether this reporter even saw the hit in question to make such a misleading (in my opinion) characterization, and such a description makes it highly unlikely, in my opinion, that the NFL will reconsider either the suspension or the fine.
Fact is, was not a dirty hit, but went head to head. And given the NFL's stance this season on that type of play , he needs to sit.
Also, Eric Smith is not a good football players, so hopefully someone can step up and replace him. He is a huge liability.
