Some reading material

Good morning.

Some good stuff in Newsday this morning (as there always is, of course). Shaun Powell wrote an outstanding column looking at former Giants QB Kerry Collins, who is having the comeback of comeback seasons leading the Titans.

Also, despite the unrelenting torrent of cheap shots thrown this blog's way by him, I'll say Bob Glauber wrote a first-rate piece on Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins. Glauber caught up with Jenkins on Tuesday in the city (I think in the city anyway). In the column Jenkins disclosed that had he not been traded from Carolina, he very well would have retired.

"I literally told myself if I had to play there again [in Carolina] that this would be my last year in the NFL," Jenkins told Glauber. "It made me want to stop playing football. That's why I got out. I just wanted to see if it was me, or a combination of me being there."

There's much more, including Jenkins - an amateur artist - drawing Bob Sutton, Eric Mangini and Bryan Cox.

A good read.

Okay, now that I have that out of my system, an aside:

A hearty happy birthday to SNY producer Katie Sadler, who several times a week pulls off the impossible of helping Steve Overmyer appear somewhat competent on the air. A source told me how old she is [not yet 30], but the same source indicated it would not be in my best interest to blog it.

Sooo, on to today's schedule at The Fort: Eric Mangini at 10:15, players in the locker room after that and then practice. No David Harris and Eric Smith yesterday and I don't expect you'll see either on Sunday. Favre was a good deal of yesterday's focus (typically the case on Wednesdays) and today we'll shift a bit to the offensive line dealing with the fierce Titans defense, Albert Haynesworth in particular. And other things, too. Back later.

I'd much prefer cold oatmeal today to globs of warmed-over Glauber

Boland = breath of fresh air
Glauber/Powell/Rock = stench of stale farts

GO JETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 73+ hours and counting......
Boland is the Best!!!

Eric, do you have any insights as to what the Jets are going to do with Nugent and/or Feeley? With the way he's playing lately it seems there is no way that they could replace Feeley. But how long can a team keep two placekickers on the roster? Is there any possibility of trading one or has the deadline passed? I'm scratching my head as to how this plays out. Nugent for Marbury (hey, leave no stone unturned)?

Erik, please tell your buddy BG that he quoted the Jets Rushing stats, at 9th in the league gaining 125.1yds per game.. as their Rush Defense stat. Here's the quote (speaking about Jenkins and his impact on the Jets run D):

"But it is all about football now. His speedy transition from a 4-3 defensive tackle to a 3-4 nose tackle, where he spends far more time fighting off double-teams, has been a major factor in the Jets' vastly improved run defense. The Jets are ninth in that category, allowing 125.1 yards rushing and only seven rushing touchdowns."

Someone tell him the Jets are 4th in run defense, allowing only 80.1 yds per game.. he did get the 7td's allowed right.

Hey MarkH,
You expected BG to get facts right? There's a reason he is a columnist without a team to actually cover. He can make up stuff. He does it well. It's like the color commentator on the TV, one minutes they hate you, the next you're the second coming. Paper filler, so to speak.
I'm betting we'll see a lot more on Ty Law on the field instead of Lowery. I also anticipate our run D stopping White and the rook, causing Collins to air it out a little more. The big question as I stated earlier in the week is how well we cover the pass. If we can get Collins to have his happy feet after a few pressures, we have a real good shot at a win. If their line keeps us at bay, it'll be a low scoring Titan victory with them using the clock.
Does Cotchery still have that most completed receptions record going for this season? Has TJ said anything about being the AFC leading rusher? With Bubba practicing is Keller's role going to be diminished ( I hope not)?

How is Ty Law against the run. one thing Lowry has going for him is that he is not afraid of contact, and does a great job on run D. i seem to remember Ty Law only liking contact in the form of holding penalties.

According to my maths, the NY Jets average 81.3 yards against on the ground. They've allowed 813 yards in 10 games according to NFL.com. Despite an error of two tenths, I'll trust MarkH when he says that's good enough for fourth.

This going to a brutal game. Smash mouth at it's finest. I want the Jets to freakin' SHOCK them! I want their mouths wide open in horror at what the Jets are doing to their undefeated season. I want Kerry Collins' repeated gang-sackings to make him think he's still playing for Carolina. I want blood!

In a completely unrelated note: RC, i was under the assumption that Glauber came only in fun size nugget form. My bad.

Mr Green T, do you like the smell of napalm in the morning?

I do love a scorched earth policy regarding the undefeated Titans. I want the Jets to beat them with the word "perfect" until Tennessee is more worried about collecting their broken teeth than "who's that stepping on my neck while scoring TD's."
Go Jets!

I'm seeing a shutout, with NE behind him Mangini throws every run and pass blitz he knows at them, totally stopping their offense in its tracks.

Wait...What's that?????

Oops.....it's the alarm clock, time to get up and go to work.

So far the Titans have beaten the Jags (4-6) twice, Cincinnati (1-8), Kansas City (1-9), Houston (3-7), squeeked by Minnesota & Green Bay (5-5) and Baltimore (6-4), and beat the Colts (6-4). Some good wins, but a lot of winning games they're supposed to win. These guys are not the '07 Pats by any means.

JZ -- you forgot da bears.

Let's not denigrate an undefeated team.

Jets lost to Oakland (2-6) and SD (4-6)
AND to a team who's QB had not started anything since the Clinton administration.

Every foe is a strong foe. Otherwise no glory in the win.

I have a strange feeling about this game. I think the Jets pull it off, and the special teams are a big reason. That is the one area the Jets have a decided advantage over the Titans otherwise it is fairly even except for the pass D.

Like Green T said, this will be brutal. I can see KJ or even Pace laying a Mo Lewis type hit on someone, most likely Lenwhale. Jets win 16-13 on a clutch Feely kick.

The worse thing that can happen is Favre has to throw an incredible amount of passes. Their pass D is very tough. We don't need Favre chucking up ducks for grabs. We need the Favre from the past two weeks to show up and dink and dunk. This means Bubba Franks needs to stay off the field. Let Keller play between the zones and take the 5-7 yard pass plays. Not rocket science. I really hate having to work this weekend. I'm going to be out of my mind by the time I get home.

Boland:

Please tell your readers thanks for the correction on the rushing stat. My bad.
