Mangini: Years in NY "invaluable"
Eric Mangini was introduced as the Browns new head coach this morning and stressed only the positives from of his time in New York.
"My last three years with the New York Jets, as a first-time head coach, was invaluable,'' Mangini said. "I'm proud of what we did at the Jets -- two of three winning seasons. But what I'm most proud of is the people that we brought into that organization, the players we brought into that organization and, really, the organization we were starting to build.''
Mangini also said he was on board with the Favre trade.
"Any of those decisions I was intricately involved in," Mangini said.
I don't completely buy that, but Mangini said the only thing he could say there. There's no way he benefits by saying anything bad about the Jets so why do it?
Mangini confirmed he was looking to bring Brian Daboll from the Jets aboard as his offensive coordinator and Rob Ryan as his defensive coordinator. He will also likely talk to the Jets about releasing Bill Callahan from his contract, which has one year remaining. Callahan, of course, has interviewed for Mangini's old job and spoke with owner Woody Johnson about it yesterday.
I'll repeat what I said here last week after Mangini was fired: I think the Jets will end up with a good head coach out of this, but I thought Mangini deserved at least one more year in New York. I think he'll do well in Cleveland.
* Now, of more import to the Jets. Johnson and the rest of the Jets hierarchy, they're in Arizona today interviewing Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm, who is more than a peripheral contender for the job. Rex Ryan's interview could be as soon as Sunday, if the Ravens win Saturday. If the Ravens lose, the defensive coordinator is likely to visit Florham Park early next week.

If Rex gets the job, I would have liked to see Rob Ryan come in as the defensive coordinator. Mangini will do good in Cleveland. 8-8 or 9-7 would be welcomed with open arms in Cleveland I would think. Not quite like the 9-7 here, with the collapse after 8-3 start, but the Browns are one of the few franchises worse off then the Jets.
The search continues. I have a little faith, that they will in the end, end up with a decent HC. Spags or Ryan are OK in my book. I understandd the 4-3 concerns with Spags, but I don't think it would take as back to step one of rebuilding, if he chooses to go that route.
Erik, I am sure you will be kept busy for weeks to come, for the NY Jets are forever the Kings of the offseason. Never have i ever encountered a team that can create such a buzz in the offseason, and yet fail miserably on such a consitant basis during the regular season. It is truly baffling. Keep up the great work, and thanks for keeping us informed.
REPOST:
differences between Herm and Mangini:
Mangini was a young coach learning on the job in a town that does not tolerate failure - he was doomed from the start.
Herm took a competitive product, and turned it into something found in Mangini'sBaby's diaper; Mangini took that same turd and made it competitive (remember 8-3)
When Herm left, not many players spoke out on his behalf (a few did); every single player quoted in the media has positive comments regarding Mangini
With the offensive talent on the Browns roster, Mangini will field a competitive product in 2009. He's already picked a good DC, solid opening move
Good luck to Eric Mangini and his Cleveland Browns, except, when they play my beloved JETS! A class move to not trash his former team. Very interesting to me he didn't want Sutton or Schottenheimer and only Callahan. That move speaks volumes if you think about it.
As I suspected, a repost--from 30 minutes ago:
My inside operatives at Homeland Security have just passed highly classified information along to me via secret computer cable links that I have access to using the password namath12.
According to coordinates picked up by U.S. spy satellites, it appears that a Solara has been spotted traveling west at an extremely high rate of speed from Florham Park toward Lake Erie. The government is tracking its every movement.
Speculation is that the driver is on a bold mission to become the director of press relations for the Cleveland Browns or possibly even their next GM. This is coming precisely at the time the country is transitioning from Bush to Obama and the Browns are making threatening moves near New York's western border.
Erik, you got anything on this?
I understand he was wearing some kind of funky sweater and singing along to Abba tunes on the way, following the burning river of love.
Erik, you don't name your kid after a guy who you didn't want on your team. I think he may have been hesitant at first but really welcomed the addition of Favre to the club. Sure, Favre contributed to our downfall, but then again so did everyone. The team as a whole just didn't play as well as we did during that 8-3 run. But I am glad Mangini got another chance so quickly, and I, like you, believed he should have gotten one more year in NY. Mangini, Daboll, Ryan: that should have been happening here in 09 rather than Cleveland! But, I am confident we will end up with a great coach anyway, so what happened happened. I'll definitely be rooting for the Brownies now though, they are my second favorite team behind the Jets with their addition of Mangini.
What's the over/under on Mangini bringing Hank "Face Mole" Poteat with him?
Hey Boland, did anyone ever confirm if Vilma played 85% of the snaps? If so, did anybody ever confirm that nets us a 3rd rounder?
Thanks!
Vilma needed to play 85% of the plays and be resigned BEFORE free agency for us to get the draft pick.
I heard the Saints will sign him after free agency begins so they don't have to give up the pick.
Correction:
85% of plays and signing before free agency was for the 2nd round pick.
The conditional 4th round pick was bumped to a 3rd round pick because of his playing time.

dmb, while far from official, I have seen posted in numerous places that the Jets have one pick in every round of the 2009 draft.
They get NO's third in exchange for the Jets 4th, get a 4th for Kendall and give up a third for Farve. They have their own picks in all the other rounds.
Nothing for DRob.
They essentially traded Vilma and their 2009 third and fourth round picks to New Orleans and Green Bay for Farve and New Orleans 2009 3rd round pick and 2008 fourth round pick.
So Erik, as a fan, not a reporter, but as a Cleveland Browns fan, are you happy with the Mangini hiring?
I think it was time for Mangini to leave the Jets, but I I'm fairly confident that the'll be a successful coach in the future. I think he made some bad calls the second half of this season, but I think he is/was a decent coach. His act got stale here, and both parties needed to move on.
I'm just wondering what your thoughts, as a fan, are, and if you're looking forward to not knowing anything about your team because the coach insists on benig secretive.
Thanks.
dmb, Wayne80 (and Mike), you have it right. Wayne spelled it out nicely.
RC Meany and John Z, the solara and Abba -- two more things
I'll never live down. And to sound like coach, I have had no
conversations with anyone in Cleveland.
Let me see if I got this right:
Last year we lose Pennington to Miami and we get Favre for 11 games and a paralyzing non-decision now about if or when he's coming back. He'll let us know.
We lose Vilma to the Saints for a yet-to-be disclosed draft pick.
We lose Robertson to Denver and get nothing back.
We lose Mangini to Cleveland for a coach-to-be chosen.
We get nothing from our first round pick.
We get PSLs coming from Woody with little chance of a good product on the field in 2010.
We have a wannabe GM calling the shots on personnel (see Kendall).
We have an organization without direction -- a team that's always zigging when it should be zagging, which turns its tin ear to the voice of its fans.
It wouldn't surprise me if Pennington, Woody, Mangini and Tannenbaum have a love-in on draft day and ask Favre to join them (but he's too busy figuring out if his arm is ok and he still doesn't know about next season.
Like a battered wife, sure makes me want to keep on keeping on. Or as Diana Ross said: Set me free why don't you, babe. Get outta my life why don't you, babe.
Yes, but is there a beat writer in Cleveland whom he can mock for their lack of a personal life as well as he did to you?
Meany, it could always be worse ... we could be in Cleveland
RCMeany,
Don't forget, we got a coach fired who probably won't be our coach....As in the case of an abused wife, the hits just keep coming, and we are not going anywhere.....
Another irony, the Browns could have (interviewed and/or) chosen all of the coaches we have and or will interview, and they chose Mangini, the only one we would 100% not choose. Only the Jets.....I guess we have to have faith..
Ps...Don't forget Boland's favorite..Come on Eileen....
Come on stop with the Mangini remorse.
Every fact from the final four weeks showed he should have been let go.
Now that someone made a foolish mistake (Cleveland) we miss him?
Could Cleveland have waited and gotten Parcells?
Why didn't Cleveland hire a GM first?
Please don't use Cleveland as the paradigm of smart football decisions.
Cable got more out of less than mangini did.
What he can't control Favre?? How about NOT calling for an empty backfield on a 3rd and three!
Poor corner and bad downfield linebacker coverage - how about blitzing and not allowing 3rd stringers 7 seconds of pocket time. Stubborn to the end.
Mangini had a month to solve the riddle and it simply got worse each week. How long did it take to get Keller in the plan? Wht did Pace stop attacking the QB? All corrections mangini should have made.
NEVER made halftime adjustments, except to switch flavors of gum.
On the personnel front... Vilma was never used right. the cross town 1,000 yard rusher was cut and the ONLY speed at wide receiver crawled over glass to sneak into the final games.
Below average coach - at best.
Point taken, JZ.
Did the mayor of Cleveland give Mangini the key to the city?
Was Drew Carey there to greet him?
Did his mother-in-law make him a bowl of kasha varnishkes?
Have the Browns and the mayor forced the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame to induct the Turtles this year. I understand this was Eric's one non-negotiable demand. His favorite song is Happy Together.
How about:
1. Hire Rex Ryan as HC -- he should be #1A priority; Spags #1B
2. Bring back Romeo C. as DC -- 2 injuries away from playoffs
3. Don't let Callahan go (1 yr left on contract) -- see if you can extend
4. Go after Asoum...in Free Agency
5. Go after Terrell Suggs...in Free Agency (should come if RR is HC)
6. Trade Ellis & Coles...for whatever you can in draft - KC may bite
7. Get best available DE with 1st pick
8. Get best available CB with #2 or LB if no Suggs
9. Dream about Haynesworth!!!
10. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let Favre ride off to the sunset and
let the winner of Clemens, Ratliff, Ainge start.
The Browns will be in the playoffs next year.
The Jets will change. They were just mad because of the collapse. They didn't mean to fall apart. They promised to never do it again. They even promised me a new coach. A NEW COACH! I love you New York Jets! I love you!
Now, let's never fight again. :-)
xoxoxoxoxoxoxox
P.S.: I'll be out on the ledge drinking.
"the cross town 1,000 yard rusher was cut"
Who?
You can't be referring to Derrick Ward, he was cut by Herm/Bradway and signed by the Giants in 2004.
Danny Ware was cut by Mangini in 2007, but only gained 15 yards for the Giants this year.
I give up. Who is it?
are-tee.
Ward. My error. Too much mangini-related venom. I need to adjust my posts at halftime.
are-tee, cut CGB some slack, man. Need I remind you of these pearls of wisdom from Animal House?
D-Day: War's over, man. Wormer dropped the big one.
Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
OMG, where do I start. I've been up in the Western mountains of Maine, teaching skiing, so thankfully missed a good chunk of the end.
What this Enquiring mind wants to know is:
1. Will our Erik follow the old Eric to Cleveland. We know what a "love affair" those 2 had going.
2. Will the Jets dump Coles?
3. What really happened to K Jenkins? Is he hurt?
4. Why did I let myself get sucked in after teh Titan's victory. I should have known better...I do know better, but still, I got suckered in. When will I ever learn?
5. Why won't this box automatically put in a soft return. My sentences are traveling across the screen?
ISo last week, I'm standing in the lunch room at the mountain I teach at and what do my wandering eyes should appear, a kid wearing a Jets sweatshirt!!! I put my arms up in the air and scared the living daylights out of the kid, before I got a big smile from him.
We Jets fans in New England know how to commiserate...and we had a quick conversation about Mangini before the Pats fans started talking over us. The only consilation is they aren't in the playoffs either! (although I still hate Miami more!)
Good to see you all
A bad day of skiing beats a good day at work! (wish I could say the same about the watching the Jets!)
Deb from NE said something about a box with a soft return. If I could find one of those I'd never watch football!!!
Deb..I LOVE YOU
Wow the sh-t is really flying thick. Eric was what he is. A maniacal egotist who had little people skills and a lousy approach to winning football games. How anybody can defend him now is a laugh to me. He was not good at what he did. He will not be good in Cleveland. He failed miserably at the time the team needed him most. The team needed a strong leader. The team needed two calls. The playbook was never opened. The team needed to run early and often. Instead he asked Brett to fling the ball with his 39 year old arm deep down the field eschewing the offense players had been selected for. On the other side of the ball they need to assault the QB. Instead stupid Eric asked his players for better coverage on opposing receivers. What Eric did was make some lousy QB's look very good. Ty law off the couch must have made some players wonder mid season why they had worked so hard. Woody has almost looked worse, still having no replacement in sight. Tannenbaum must get some blame as well. As a bean counter or capologist maybe ok. What experience did he ever have evaluating talent? Was he the driving force behind the Gholston pick? Reports I have seen call him the worst talent in the top 30 picks. This team better act fast because I think fans are becoming embarrassed and losing interest.
