I hate myself.
I talked to Cal receiver/punt return master DeSean Jackson a few hours ago. I'm a big fan. Very candid, confident and we all know about his skill set. Well, you won't know that because I'm a moron. A MORON. I'm not sure why, but the conversation wasn't recorded. Yes, I tested the phone-to-tape recorder setup before the phone interview, TWICE.
This was the first installment of a weekly Q&A I'll be doing with the nation's top players. But, I can't quote Jackson, I can only go off the notes I took. So I'll give you a recap.
Bash me all you want in the comments. I deserve it.
Again, none of these are direct quotes, except for the last answer he gave.
Campus Confidential: What NFL receiver do you most model your game after?
DeSean Jackson: A combination of Steve Smith because of what he can do despite his size, what Chad Johnson can do when he gets the ball and the precision and consistency of Marvin Harrison.
Campus Confidential: What's Coach Tedford like off the field?
DeSean Jackson: Real mellow. Like a father figure.
Campus Confidential: How ready are you for Saturday's rematch with Tennessee?
DeSean Jackson: Been waiting a long time for it. He said the team has put in a lot of work this summer in anticipation for it.
Campus Confidential: What did he do this summer to get ready?
DeSean Jackson: Worked on his hands, quickening his feet and strength. Lot of weights.
Campus Confidential: Toughest corner he's ever faced?
DeSean Jackson: He can't single out a cornerback. Says the Pac-10 is loaded with good corners who he faces each week and he knows all of them are gunning to shut him down.
Campus Confidential: Take us through a DeSean Jackson punt return.
DeSean Jackson: The first thing he does is secure the catch. Then his vision clicks when he checks to see if the play called is forming and the blocks are coming together. From there, it's speed. Gave a lot of credit to special teams coach Pete Alamar.
Campus Confidential: What do you think when you hear everyone penciling USC in as the national title favorite?
DeSean Jackson: USC is a good program. Coach Carroll is a great guy and they have a lot of talent.
Campus Confidential: How are you and Nate Longshore going to be a better tandem this year?
DeSean Jackson: They worked on timing mostly and spent a lot of time together this summer working out. He said Nate is more confident in the huddle and he expects a huge year with a deep corps of receivers.
Campus Confidential: What are your personal goals for the season?
DeSean Jackson: Doesn't set personal goals. Just wants go out and help the team as much as possible by performing at a high level.
Campus Confidential: What's been your favorite road stadium to play in?
DeSean Jackson: "Washington's stadium" (Husky Stadium)
Campus Confidential: Finish this sentence: DeSean Jackson is _______________.
DeSean Jackson: "The most electrifying player in college football."
Again, I hate myself. I did this no justice. My apologies to you all and to John over at Cal who set this up. I have to go take a two-hour nap before I catch a plane to Virginia to cover the VT-ECU game. I deserve no sleep.
LSU will cover 17.5 on Thursday night because the defense will give up six yards all game.
Whatever, I'm disgusted. Later.

These things happen, Big Cat...what are you gonna do? You know what Hogan would do -- Train, eat your vitamins, believe in yourself and get a new tape recorder.
