Fox A Bright Spot In Typical Cubs Season
Hope, optimism, slump, despair, failure.
Repeat. Repeat. Then repeat again.
This is Cubs baseball. All the ivy, sunny summer days, and the beer can't wash away the frustration that comes with another season spent on the outside looking in at the fall classic.
Such a common requiem is a Cubs season without a World Series, let alone a title, that a few have tried to write one.
Yet the refrain of wait till next year does offer the Cubs some hope. Beyond Ramirez, Soriano (Maybe) and Zambrano, there is one player who has served as a bright spot, one of the biggest hopes for 2010.
In a season of missed expectations, the former Cathedral grad and native of Beech Grove has arrived in Chicago with high expectations, and for the most part has done well to deliver. He's managed to stay in the major leagues from early summer on, hitting .280 with 11 homers and 41 RBI's as of Wednesday.
At the same time, he's played four different positions for the Cubs, from catcher to the outfield. Perhaps just as impressive, he managed to stay up for nearly the entire season, returning to Triple-A Iowa just once, and playing 67 games.
Some in Chicago see him as the go to player for the future, some have even labeled him the next great Cub. While those things are still to be seen, at the very least when Cubs fans talk about him and say wait till next year, there is at least some real hope.
