In a girls lacrosse game between the two top teams in CHSAA, St. Anthony’s defeated rival Sacred Heart, 15-10, in the first of two regular-season matchups. This contest was close in the first half after Sacred Heart’s Lauren Tita (two goals) and Lindsay Corin scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 6 with 2:24 left to play.
But just as this game looked like it would be a grudge match, All-American Jessica Russo (six goals and one assist) and Courtney Bradley (three goals and one assists) each scored in the closing minutes as St. Anthony’s closed out the half on a 3-0 run and never looked back.
“I came into this game so fired up,” said the Northwestern-bound Russo. “After last year’s [15-13 loss in the CHSAA championship game], we really wanted to get back at them. We came into this game with a lot of determination and purpose. Sacred Heart has been one of our rivals. This [win] is a turning point for us in our season.
Both teams will square off again on May 12.
