Garden City passes test

BY MARC JIMENEZ

It’s not everyday that a big game meets the hype and turns into a great clash of wills. But on Saturday afternoon Garden City and Shoreham-Wading River, two of the better teams in girls lacrosse, played a memorable non-league game. And when it was all said and done, Garden City prevailed, 18-15, in overtime.

The Lady Trojans, who have scored 10 or more goals in the first half in nine of 11 games, led just 6-4 going into the second. It was a decent lead, definitely something to build on, but SWR outscored Garden City, 11-8, in the final 24 minutes to take a 15-14 lead.

But with five seconds remaining in the game, Brittany Wilton, who netted four goals, tied the game at 15 for Garden City (11-1) to send the game in overtime. And when the Lady Trojans got into overtime, Becky Lynch scored two of her three goals in the extra session as Garden City outscored SWR, 3-0, in overtime.

Erin Brennan had two goals and seven assists, including three assists in overtime. Caroline McTiernan recorded a game-high five goals. On the other side, Stephanie Anderson led SWR (11-1) with four goals and Jen DeVito chipped in three goals.

Both teams play Monday at 4:30. Garden City travels to Mineola while SWR visits Deer Park.
