Girls Soccer Class AA State Semifinal: East Islip vs. Fairport (Section V)

BY CHRIS MASCARO

Good morning from Cortland everyone! Sorry for the blogging delay, but our system was a little shaky earlier.

Anyway, we're at halftime of the Class AA state semifinal between East Islip and Fairport.

Fairport leads 1-0 on a goal by Kacie Bednarcyk on an assist from Allyson DiMagno with 15:08 left in the first half.

In the other semifinal (on the field on the opposite side of the press box), John Jay-East Fishkill (yes, that's one school ... it's in Section I) leads Baldwinsville (Section III), 1-0.

UPDATE: With less than 13:00 to go in the second half, East Islip still trails 1-0. The Redmen had a few decent chances this half, including a Lena Amalfitano shot from about 10 yards out that narrowly missed wide left. Alexa Niciforo also had a chance on a rebound, but again, the shot fell wide.

UPDATE: Amalfitano just had another close miss. She headed a corner kick that was snagged by Fairport goalie Melissa Martens just before it crossed the goal line with about 11:45 to go. EI still trails 1-0.

UPDATE: East Islip's undefeated run has ended. Brigit Falcon scored on an assist from Regina Nowicki with less than 2:00 to go, sealing the 2-0 win for Fairport.

Fairport will play John Jay-East Fishkill in tomorrow's Class AA final at 10 a.m. at Homer High.

*This was East Islip's first appearance at the state tournament.

That's it from Cortland. The next three games today are all at Homer High, where I'm told there is no wireless connection. If not, check back on the main site for updates on South Side (Class A), Cold Spring Harbor (Class B) and Stony Brook (Class C).

Thanks for coming out this morning!

Happy Monday to everyone! It was an exciting weekend of girls soccer action, and four local teams will be making the trek to SUNY Cortland/Homer High School/Tompkins Cortland Community College (TC3) this weekend for the state semifinals (Friday) and finals (Saturday). Here are the schedules for each team...

Class A: South Side will play Williamsville East (Section VI) at 11:45 a.m. on Friday at Homer High. A win would place the Cyclones in the title game at noon on Saturday at TC3.

Class B: Cold Spring Harbor will face Livonia (Section V) at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at Homer High. If CSH wins Friday, it advances to the title game at 1 p.m. the following day at Homer.

Girls Soccer Class AA Long Island Championship Game: Massapequa (Section VIII) vs. East Islip (Section XI)

BY CHRIS MASCARO

We're just about ready for the finale from Dowling, the Class AA Long Island/Southeast regional between a pair of unbeatens — Massapequa (16-0-3) and East Islip (18-0-0). A Massapequa win would give Nassau the sweep today.

Tonight's winner will play the winner of Fairport (Section V) and Clarence (Section VI) at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at SUNY Cortland.

*Limited blogging for this game because I'm on deadline (sorry!)

UPDATE: We're at halftime, and the game is scoreless.

The best opportunity for either side came near the midway point of the first half, as Kim DeCesare hit a nice cross to Emily Masiello, whose shot knocked off the inside of the left post and bounced away.

UPDATE: With 36:18 to go in the second half, Lena Amalfitano headed in a corner kick to give East Islip a 1-0 lead.

UPDATE: With 31:45 remaining, Kerry Sullivan rifled a shot from outside the box on the left post that knocked off the top post. That's two posts tonight for Massapequa...

UPDATE: With 20:20 to go, Laura Hofrichter served up a shot from about 30 yards out that hooked Beckham-style into the left side of the net to give East Islip a 2-0 lead. This one may be over...

UPDATE: East Islip punched its first-ever ticket to the state semifinals with a 2-0 win, ending Massapequa's unbeaten streak this season at 19 games.

Massapequa beat East Islip in the 2005 title game en route to a state title. We'll see next weekend if East Islip can do the same this year.

Thanks to everyone for coming out today! We'll see ya'll in Cortland on Friday!

Girls Soccer Class A Long Island Championship Game: South Side (Section VIII) vs. Islip (Section XI)

BY CHRIS MASCARO

Okay, we're back at a rainy Dowling Sports Complex for the Class A Long Island Championship/Southeast Regional final between South Side (8-3-5) and Islip (13-1-1).

These two teams have played the past three seasons in this round, with South Side winning each time. South Side has won nine straight Long Island Class A titles, and two in a row before that in Class B.

South Side is without Crystal Dunn, who is playing with the under-17 national team, and Carly Beyar is out of the starting lineup for the fourth straight game with a knee injury.

We're just underway, so check back often for updates!

*The winner of this game will play the Our Lady of Mercy (Section V)-Williamsville East (Section VI) winner at 11:45 a.m. on Friday at Homer High School in the Class A state semifinals.

UPDATE: Less than five minutes into the game, Islip's Beth Bowling lined up a shot from just outside the box that hit off the South Side goalie's hands and knocked off the right post.

South Side had a couple scrums in front of the net a few minutes later (including one on a corner kick) but couldn't put one home. Exciting action here in the early going.

UPDATE: After an initial flurry (see above) and a pair of corner kicks for each side, the teams remain scoreless at the half.

UPDATE: With 28:29 on the clock in the second half, South Side's Colleen Burke had a free kick from about 10 yards outside the box. But her attempt hit the bottom upright on the field-goal post just above the net (in other words, it was close).

Less than two minutes later, Islip's Kara Salerno moved in on a 2-on-1, but her shot was stopped by the South Side goalie.

We're still scoreless at Dowling.

UPDATE: Senior captain Prudence Rydstrom got taken off with an apparent right leg injury and is being worked on by the trainer on the sideline. Junior forward Kara Rafferty replaced her.

Gaby Martino narrowly missed putting Islip on the board a few minutes later, as her shot sailed wide right.

We're still scoreless with under 15 minutes to play.

UPDATE: Rydstrom returned at the 13:50 mark. She seems to be running fine. Could have been a cramp...

UPDATE: With just over 2:00 left in regulation, Ashleigh Nieves made a nice play to keep the ball from going out of bounds and then sent a cross into the box. Kara Salerno got a foot on it, but her shot sailed just wide to the right.

Islip got a corner kick just a minute later, but could not convert. The Bucs knocked on the doorstep a few times in the second half, but couldn't tally a goal.

We're headed for overtime!

UPDATE: We're still scoreless after the first 10-minute overtime. There will be one more 10-minute period, and then if the game is still scoreless, there will be two five-minute golden-goal periods before penalty kicks.

UPDATE: With about 5:40 to go in the second 10-minute overtime, Rydstrom had a go from about 30 yards out, which bounced off the goalie's hands and hit up against the top post before being knocked away.

Islip still knocking on the door, but can't break it down...

UPDATE: Still 0-0 after two 10-minute overtimes. Onto the first five-minute golden-goal period...

UPDATE: The two five-minute periods came and went (miraculously) without a goal. PKs will decide the Class A title...

Liz Monfort had a point-blank shot with 25 seconds left in the first overtime, but she ripped one right at Ali Griffin from five yards out.

Then, a minute into the second five minutes, Griffin was caught out of position and three Islip defenders hit the turf. But Griffin recovered just in the nick of time to grab the ball before it crossed the goal line.

Then, with one second left (seriously), Trisha Sileo had a free kick from about 28 yards that she knocked off the top post.

Unbelievable action in the overtimes...

UPDATE: South Side wins its fourth straight Class A Long Island Championship with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks.

Jenna DiIorio and Jessica Baccaglini gave South Side a 2-0 lead, and then Katie Hyland and Dominique DeMasi scored for Islip to tie it at 2.

Monfort scored in the fourth round to put South Side up 3-2, leaving it up to Islip's Beth Bowling, whose shot was saved by goalie Lauren Lopresti.

Girls Soccer Class B Long Island Championship Game: Cold Spring Harbor (Section VIII) vs. Mattituck (Section XI)

BY CHRIS MASCARO

Good morning from the Dowling Sports Complex!

Three Long Island Championship/Southeast Regional finals will be played here today, and first up is Cold Spring Harbor (10-4-2) and Mattituck (10-5-2) in the Class B game.

(*Quick notes: Stony Brook is the Section XI Class C representative, but its regional final is this evening at Yorktown High School against North Salem of Section I. The Class A game between Islip and South Side starts at 4:30 p.m., and the Class AA match between Massapequa and East Islip will kick off at 7 p.m.)

This game is just underway, so we'll be back with updates throughout the game.

*The winner of this game will play either Livonia (Section V) or East Aurora (Section VI) in the state semifinals at 2:30 p.m. next Friday at Homer High School.

UPDATE: We're at the 19:00 mark in the first half, and the game is scoreless.

UPDATE: Still scoreless at the 7:00 mark, and neither team has had very many scoring opportunities.

The closest we came to a score was near the 10:30 mark, as Cold Spring Harbor's Liz Ludlow chipped a shot from the left side that went clear across the box, but just wide of the net.

UPDATE: With 1:27 to go in the first half, the ball trickled out to Cold Spring Harbor's Rebecca Quirk, who fired a shot from just outside the box and scooted the ball just past Mattituck goalie Courtney Birkmier to give CSH a 1-0 lead. It was Quirk's first goal of the season.

That's where we are at the half.

UPDATE: At the 31:25 mark in the second half, Cold Spring Harbor's Caroline McManus made a save, but she lost control of the ball briefly. Danielle Young nearly got her foot on the rebound attempt, but McManus grabbed it away just before she did.

UPDATE: With 8:00 to play, CSH still leads 1-0.

UPDATE: The first game of our tripleheader has concluded, and Cold Spring Harbor earned a 1-0 win. The Seahawks will play Livonia (which advanced with a 2-1 advantage in penalty kicks) at 2:30 p.m on Friday at Homer High School in the Class B state semifinals.

We'll take a break and be back at 4:30 p.m. for Islip-South Side. See ya then!
