BULLETIN: Isles sign Mark Streit

The Islanders just landed their power-play quarterback. Former Montreal defenseman Mark Streit, 30, just agreed to a five-year deal. Streit totaled 13 goals, 49 assists and 62 points last season. His point total tied that of new Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell, who earlier today signed an eight-year deal for $57 million.

More details will follow as soon as they become available.

There you go Garth. He can also play wing in a pinch. there is our PPQB now go get Ryder and Huselius. Lets Go Islanders

Whats funny is the islanders got the better defenseman then we did with redden and they paid 2 mill less

8:13 pm and the Oracle is dead...LOL

Nice start Mr. Snow. Still far far from being out of the woods!

OK I feel better now. The PP QB is here. Now get 2 guys who can score 20 goals each (Ryder, Huesleus) and I will be happy......Sir William

Fun fact: he put up as many points as Brian Campbell, who got a longer contract for $3 million more a year.

Ryder is realistic, and why not offer Huselius the same contract you threw at him at the deadline? It will at least give us a solid veteran core around which the kids can be inserted.

I like it! Very sensible signing.

Am I seeing things or did the Penguins sign GODARD ???

Godard and Keing George on the same team.....Hope you are doing your puch ups Kip Brennan !

Great pickup by Garth Snow. He dumps MAB at the deadline last year for a third round pick in a deep draft. The Islanders third round picks have great upside (more than MAB). Then he goes and gets Streit in free agency, does not cost him any players or picks, and he had to spend the money anyway in order to meet the floor of the cap.

He still has plenty of money to go and get a winger or centerman.

Keep up the good work Snowy boy!!!!

Laraque is an UFA and will not be back with Pitt.

The timing of this signing suggests that the Isles must have been in the hunt for Redden. Once he picked the Rangers, they musy have opted for Streit. A wise choice and a good first step.

Keep going, Garth. I told everone here that you would get a PP QB and a scoring forward. So far, so good.......Sir William

Its obvious Redden isnt the player he once was-when we gave him to Ottawa for a bag of pucks. This is a GREAT first move-lol last year's first move--2 weeks in-Jon Sim. He's learning lol

Great move by Garth. NYI grabs the better dman than their bitg city counterpart.

To be fair about Redden, he was included in the Berard deal, and I believe we also got Toronto's 1st round pick (which became Luongo) and Jonsson in that deal. Berard won a Calder...I'd call that one of Milbury's better deals.

Streit, Martinek, Witt, Sutton, Campoli, Gervais, Meyer, Hillen - Are those our top 8 or does anything think that someone can be dealt? From Snow's very brief tenure as GM I know he likes DMen, but maybe Gervais/Campoli plus a 2nd/3rd round pick to the Leafs for McCabe + more?

streit is a smallish defenceman but we needed this pp quarterback. now we must sign weight laraque huselius. i think gervais should definitely be traded for another defenceman (mccabe or kubina) and make things more interesting and sign patrick o sullivan, or jay bouwmeester to an offer sheet

Did not know Laraque was a F.A.....SIGN HIM RIGHT NOW !!!!

Joe...No way would we have to give up that much for McCabe...NO WAY !!

Keep Campoli....

p.s We still have no offense ! Prove me wrong Garth!

Great signing by Garth. It's amazing what one move can do to brighten spirits. We just got a guy who has the same points total as Campbell for nearly $4 million less per season. Ryder, Huselius ... either one would be great obviously. I still think Weight would be a smart move.

Way to go garth !!!
I feel better than I did an hour ago exterminating Japanese Beetles

Streit is a nice player but let's take it easy about having gotten the better of the.D men.he was what he was in Montreal- an incredible offensive team. Take a breath everyone.

agreed. DG ... It is still a nice signing though...What scares me is if he was so good, why would MTL let him go for short dough???

That does not make sense for a team on the cusp!

Somthing smells fishy!

I don't understand the Islanders Logic with this signing - Snow & Nolan both did not like Bergeron - so instead they sign a guy just like him, very bad in his own zone - Streit's numbers look good on paper b/c he was playing with a very offensive Montreal Team - he will not put up 35 points on the Islanders....this doesn't make sense - Streit is not that good of a player...I would rather have McCabe and his large contract for 3 years, than Streit for 5 years. What happened to the youth movement, at least if they would have just Signed Hainsey - he is only 27.

As I wrote on Zipay's blog ...
Streit's ... for the unleavened experience of a lifetime.
Now if the Icelanders get personnel named Martin and Hoffman, I'll plotz.

Looks like a good signing, although 5 years might be too steep. Would rather have Streit than Redden, in my opinion, especially at the cost.

Like Bergeron, Streit is not a tower of strength in his own end, but Bergeron was simply was shooter, a blast from the point on the power play, not a power play "quarterback." That's what Streit is, so they are very different. The problem will be depth, as it has been. If Streit gets hurt, what then? To ensure at least a reasonably competent power play, they still need more.

great move. now i would really like them to add some toughness. asham was not resigned in NJ. i really want him back.
