A snap shot by Chris Lee at 2:28 of the overtime period gave the Islanders an improbable 3-2 victory over the Devils tonight at Prudential Center. But if new coach Scott Gordon’s planned “high-tempo attack” doesn’t perform better than it did in the third period, the regular-season opener in this arena a week from tonight isn’t likely to have the same happy ending.
The Devils outshot the Islanders, 15-5 in the third period. It took 13:25 for the Isles to produce their first shot on goal as they simply couldn’t get out of their own end. Terrific goaltending by Yann Danis was the only thing that saved the Islanders. Danis made 28 saves in the game and withstood a five-on-three Devils power play lasting 1:46 at the start of the third period.
Danis also got lucky at one point when Patrik Elias shot from left of the crease and put the puck behind Danis but off the right post. But Danis was good, too, gloving a one-timer by Anssi Salmela from the right circle and stopping Zach Parise on a deflection just right of the crease.

Well, at least they scored a few goals ....
Great job of killing the Devils power play but they were still scoreless on any of their power plays so there's still no improvement from last year on PP scoring.
Positive signs from Danis in the 3rd period. How will Gordon decide who's going to back up DiPi, MacDonald or Danis?
A win is a win is a win....Let the real games start so we can get a better sample of what we have to look forward to!
PP was horrible. Third period looked like the ice was tilted. The older guys on this teams legs are gonna fall off. Brilliant move to put Guerin and Weight in this new type of offense. The Bobbles never cease to amaze me.
That's why there's a pre-season... to get guys in shape... Guerin and Weight will be fine. They are obviously not the 23 year old young guns that they used to be... but their value goes way beyond their ability to be premier players at this point in their careers.

Maybe before someone tries to play imposter for someone they should know the lineup before making remarks ... and know that a team was playing almost 8 minutes shorthanded in the 3rd period... #1 Guerin and Weight didn't even play in last night's game ... #2 The Isles only played 4 forwards with a year of NHL experience .... and 3 defensemen with a full year of NHL experience .. and that includes Gervais who hasn't technically played full year do to injuries .... and forget about goaltending ... Other than that ... great post ... haha.

We all know what we are dealing with here ... the Isles aren't going to blow the doors off anybody this season .... in the rare games that they do I'm sure we'll see as many if not more times when the Isles will be on the short side of a blow out.
This is a season for growth, development and maybe a pleasant surprise... I really don't think the Isles are bad enough to compete in the Tavares sweepstakes because DP will steal some wins in some games they have no business being in.... speaking of which ... good to see DP get in a good practice.
Gonna be a LOOOOOOOOOONG year.
I don't know about anyone else; but I have not been able to watch a single pre-season game. I am going to pass judgment and opinion only after watching the team; which I will do for the first time on Monday night in Florida. From what I have read, I am dieng to watch the kids and witness Gordon's system. What will the lineup look like on opening night? What will the final line combo's look like? What happens on the blue line when Campoli & Sutton come back? Are these guys at a dis-advantage having missed a good portion of camp? They have to come back into the lineup and get on the job experience learning Gordon's system. There is a lot to consider and think about at this point.
I will post from my I-phone between periods while I am at the game on Monday.
Peace!!

I feel your pain Coral....out here in 505land I have seen more vintage games (NHL network) than I have seen pre-season games (NO network) over the past few weeks.
I've got all of the lines of "The Coach" memorized, and have yet to see what kind of ugly ties Gordon wears.
In fact, this past week has been doubly painful with no Yankees in the playoffs. At least I get to see Torre and Mattingly in some kinda blue uni.
And the bartender's union in 505land is happy.
Hurry up Friday.
I actually miss Howie Rose (Did I really just say that? About the wet dream destroyer?).
Here's to a season where we see Billy Jaffe stick a gallon of Wendy's chili in his mouth the 1st time DP is working on a 2-0 shutout with 6 minutes left in the game.
Okay, I hope I am not onto something here with my previous shot in the dark comment about not seeing what kind of ties Gordon wears.
UGLY TIE UPDATE NUMBER 1.
Just watched Islander TV and Gordon's post game interview after the Isles defeated the Bruin's 3-1.
Yellow tie with brown polka dots and some kind of octopus suction cups running down the center of the tie.
What the hell is THAT?
Johnette Howard's article makes me frustrated. Its not a news article, its not even an opinion piece, its just taking potshots at the Islanders (and the fans) and most of the information in it is not accurate.
At one point she likens Islanders fans to Pirates or Cubs fans and if we remember the playoffs... Duh? We made the playoffs 4 times in the last 6 years. She brings up Smyth leaving, claiming we can't sign any free agents but overlooks the signing of Streit this summer.
It has to be a troll hacking because:
a.) How could a professional journalist be that uninformed about something it takes 5 mintues to look up online
b.) How could the editors of Newsday publish a piece that presents old and false information (unless they are just trying to stir up controversy for more webpage hits).
Hey Regs....All above posts are not me, just psycho boy showing how nuts he is and how little he knows about hockey.
I will be back when the puck drops for real.
Merrick, send me an email as to where you are sitting for the opener. Nick, I believe you got my email as well if you are around! Family and I are coming down!
Above not me...imposter forgot meds again. I will not be at opener...I'll be up in Boston...but, I'd like to catch second home game with regs...
Bobblehead 08 coming to a theatre near us....should be interesting.
Troll...Are you really that lonely ? Is life really that bad. I do live in MA, but not Boston, so nice try MORON !
