It appears that the Rangers won't cut a deal for a top-line unrestricted free agent won't happen in the next few days:
This from Rangers president and GM Glen Sather, as reported by the Canadien Press, from the NHL general managers meetings in Naples, Fla. , when asked about the players and prospects sought by teams with much-sought after players:
"Let's wait `til you get closer to the trading deadline," said Sather. "This is like 30 guys at the used car lot right now, and every guy wants the same four or five cars. The guy doing the selling is asking a lot more. When you get closer to the trading deadline, it won't be that way."

Sather's decision to wait and see what happens, is probably one of the few smart decisions he's made since being hired as GM of this franchise. With 4 games left to play before the trading deadline ends, it would be unwise for Sather to be a buyer, especially if they loose these games and fall way behind in the race for the last spot. My prediction: I don't see them beating the Devils in a home and home, maybe win against bluejackets, but loose again against Montreal. Thats a total of 2 points out of a possible 8. They become sellers!!!
Just what is Slats looking to buy?Gimme a break. The Rangers are in no position to be giving up young assets and high draft picks at a misguided attempt of making the playoffs
2 pts out of 8!!!
Maybe maybe not... They have 3 wins and a OT loss to the devils in 6 games....
I will have to agree with Joey. The teams ahead of us are not losing so making the playoffs is probably not going to happen. Again! Can you believe there has been a total 2 playoff games at the garden since 1997!!
I would do what Blues and Pen's did last year. Trade Nylander & Shanahan get some good young players or draft picks then try to resign them.
I am not so pessimistic about the upcoming week. I think they can take 5 points out of the next 4.
However, as noted by Bunky4, the teams ahead of the Rangers are not losing. Some of it is bad luck or timing -- the Lightning beat a Devils team that didn't show up and the Penguins didn't have the defensive energy to stop the Isles after their Sunday game.
It may be the Isles' year to make the playoffs as they keep winning games in the closing minutes. The inability to score late recently has been a real problem for the Rangers as they have lost several one-goal games (Leafs, Red Wings, e.g.) that the Isles & Devils win.
I don't think the Rangers should pick up an older player. If they were 5th or 6th in the conference it might be a different story, but right now, let the team play, get the chemistry going -- there is a renewed energy out there.
It may be frustrating for the Rangers and fans, but the Canes & Habs are falling back a bit, so it is not over yet.
I can't believe how many people want to give up so easily. Edmonton finished eighth last year and made the finals. Yes, as constituted, I don't see this team as a cup contender, but stranger things have happened, and they aren't too far from being a team to be contended with. Look at the impact that the small trade for Avery made. Another minor trade or two could make a big difference. And we have a goalie that could steal a series or two.
And the future is not well-served by creating a perpetual losing atmosphere, especially since we're not going to going to draft high enough to get a Crosby or Ovechkin or Malkin.
As Herm Edwards said, "You play to win."
so the Rangers should trade the type of assets the Preds traded to get Fopa? Remember our number one pick is a lot earlier in the draft than the Preds, Wings, etc. It is not giving up but rather lose the battle but win the war - the cup down the road. No trading significant assets in a misguided attempt to get 2 home playoff dates and raise ticket prices 10% next yr. I would only trade Assets? like Immonen or Pock (Pock is gone after this yr anyway)
