In a front office shakeup, Rangers assistant general manager Don Maloney has been named general manager of the Phoenix Coyotes and will be introduced at a team press conference tomorrow.
Maloney, the Rangers' vice president of player personnel, was one of three finalists for the Arizona post.
The vacancy means that Mark Messier, who in February said he was interested in the Rangers' GM job, is a leading candidate.
At the time, Sather -- who allowed Maloney to seek the Coyotes job where he will work with Wayne Gretzky -- said Messier needed some apprenticeship.
The former Rangers left wing has been with the Rangers front office since 1997 after serving as Islanders' assistant GM and GM from 1992 to 1995. At age 32, he was the league's youngest GM.

Shame, but he deserves another shot a running the show with an NHL franchise.
I know Maloney loves Al Montoya, Phoenix needs a young goalie, c'mon Donnie, trade us that 3rd overall pick.
Bad news for the Rangers, smart move by Phoenix. Maloney is the true architect of the current Rangers team and it's a shame we couldn't keep him. Sather should have assured Maloney he would support him as new Rangers GM once he retired, maybe then Maloney wouldn't have left. But considering how Sather loves big names and star power (Messier) it's no wonder Maloney got out. No offense to Mess, I love the guy as much as anyone, but I'm not convinced he's the best man for the job just because he's Mark Messier. Building a hockey team is obviously much different than playing for one. I would have felt a lot better with Maloney in charge than anyone else.
Messier has no qualifications for this job. He has no experience. Negotiating deals calls for an entirely different personality then leading a team.
Bad move for Glen. He's actually going to have to put down his cigar and fishing poll and do a hell of a lot more work.
I'd like to see the 4th rate Isles make some more Jokinen and Luongo for Kvasha and Parrish deals.
that one was very sweet
ha ha ha. Well said Jim.
By the way, doesn't Messier has to get the assistant GM job first? I wouldn't think he's a guarantee to get the gig. We shall see I suppose.
HAHA good one Jim. Worry about signing Blake and Smyth. This guy is talking about trades. GM Snow made a great one with Smyth....Have the nerve to talk about us. 3rd rate? Like the Island is such a desirable place to play.
I'd rather see Adam Graves get some consideration for the ass't GM position. He's been working tirelessly with the Rangers the last couple of years, and knows the organization and its prospects well. SLATS...HIRE ADAM GRAVES!
I'm still available.
Good point about Graves. I could see Mess or Graves hiring each other as assistant GMs if either of them eventually get the lead job.
Ryan Smyth crying because he was traded to the Islanders.

Don't worry guys, 'Rag Contraction' is just sour because he was SURE Neil Smith was going to bring a Cup to the Long Islanders.
Ragsy, here are just a few things Islander fans shouldn't get into debates about: Ownership, General Managers, Draft Picks, Fan Attendance and being the most popular hockey team in the Tri-State area.
Yeah, yeah, I know what you are gonna say - 'four cups, four cups' - that was a long time ago and Al Arbour don't live here no more.
This just in....
After also seeing Rag Contraction on the Daily News Rangers Blog, I decided to do a little digging around.
Turns out 'Raggy' isn't a 'he' at all.
SHE is actually one of the Islanders Squeegee Girls who is still mad at the King Henrik and the Rangers and spewing venom in every forum possible.
Well, I'll say this about 'Raggy the Islanders Squeegee Girl', she doesn't know hockey but she looks cute in a skirt and knows her way around a pole....a squeegee pole, that is.
I love the T.V. ratings stuff, it's very funny.
Lets throw away the point for a moment that, yeah, Rangers ratings were lousy but they were still more than double what Islanders ratings were.
But, who cares? All of us who post often on hockey blogs certainly either go to or watch every game.
Who cares that most of the sports fan public doesn't care about the greatest game in the world!
Screw them all anyway.
When will my leg get better? It still hurts!!! Hurry, more vicatin please.
First I want to apologize to those who I have offended in the past. The shoe beatings, sorry. Now,lets get past all that. As your new assistant GM I will do for NYR what I did for NYI. Looking forward to helping you find parking in Manhattan. Dont worry I'll get Yash here if it takes the whole farm to get him.
Nah, sorry Mad Mike, Isles are stuck with Yashin.
It really must be a pity turning on the Stanley Cup finals and watching Jason Spezza buzzing all over the ice knowing he could be doing that as an Islander.
21 points in 16 playoff games so far.
Not too shabby.
It's getting close to the 6th anniversary of this one!
23-Jun-01: Ottawa Senators traded Alexei Yashin to the New York Islanders for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt and 1st round selection (Jason Spezza) in 2001.
Where you Isles fans gonna party to celebrate????
This one is an oldie, but a goodie:
06-Feb-98: New York Islanders traded Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan McCabe and 3rd round selection (Jarkko Ruutu) in 1998 to the Vancouver Canucks for Trevor Linden.
time for me to stop reading this blog.. jim/tj, surely you have better things to do than engage islander fans who come here just to get you riled up. you will never 'win,' and quite frankly it's amazing you're still trying.
Actually, not really thinking about winning, I know I will win.
Anytime an Islander fan comes here, they get a literary smack in the face.
I get them with the facts, they get me with Ulf Nilsson needing Vicodin, it's funny seeing the next stupid thing they say each time.
Rag Contraction if you really are one of thoes ice girls and shes still pissed over Lundqvists "tap" (because i doubt it was even that) then she should go back to her Gentelmens Club and do some work that pays better and where the men are allowed to spit on you.
actually, it's not all that funny. it fills the blog up with drivel from both sides. you win by not stooping to their level.
anon (plz put in a name, theres like 20 anons), if u dont like it..leave go to the other blog and become icelander fan...perhaps u already are.
as for messier, his career speaks for itself. 6 cups is pretty good last i checked. his leadership on and off the ice are second to none...i got sick of him as did most most ranger fans towards the end, but he was worth his weight in gold. his GUARENTEE in game 6 vs. jersey was the stuff of legends. he promised us a cup and delivered. so saying all that, mess as GM would be awesome. he has knowledge to know who is good and who is not.
i think "ragsy" is jealous we traded for him...and they traded for yashin (who, btw, may have the worst contract in all of sports..next to DiPietro, lmao!)
is this better? i'm a ranger fan, i just find it incredibly hard to support you when your backtalk just encourages the very people we want to avoid.
Have to agree with anonymous Ranger fan. I don't think it's fair to Steve also to have the comments section ruined with the useless drivel. So Jim and company don't encourage them.
