Rangers sign Brodie Dupont

I like this kid, he's got snarl and size and has improved offensive numbers each year.

Here's the official release;

Dupont, 20, skated in 70 games with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL) this past season, registering 37 goals and 33 assists for 70 points, along with 90 penalty minutes and a plus-23 rating.
While serving as one of Calgary's alternate captains for the second consecutive season, Dupont led the Hitmen with 37 goals and ranked second on the team in scoring with 70 points. His 37 goals tied for ninth in the league. He also shared the team-lead with 11 power play goals and tied for second on the club with a plus-23 rating. In addition, Dupont recorded an 11-game point scoring streak from October 8 to October 30, collecting eight goals and eight assists over that span. In the postseason, Dupont led the Hitmen in goals (nine) and points (16), and helped his team reach the WHL's Eastern Conference Finals. His nine goals tied for sixth among all WHL players in the playoffs.

The 6-2, 210-pound forward has skated in 214 career games with Calgary (WHL), registering 81 goals and 68 assists for 149 points, along with 324 penalty minutes. His 81 career goals currently rank ninth among Calgary's all-time leaders. In 43 career playoff games, he has collected 15 goals and 20 assists for 35 points, along with 78 penalty minutes.

Born in Russell, Manitoba, Dupont was originally a third round selection of the Rangers, 66th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

Between Dupont and Byers, we have a couple of big tough wingers, who can score, in the system, that compensate for Jessiman being a bust.

Thats true Jim.
How did you like that bust by Buffalo?

I am actually suprised that it didn't go more than 5 games.

I thought Ottawa would win, but not in 5.

Gotta admit it was hard to watch knowing it could have been us with a couple of breaks.

this guy sounds like a cam neely type.

betman was on with mike and the dog today...nbc had no choice in the matter. the race had certain sponsors and nbc had obligations to show the pre game of the race. the plan was exactly wat happen, if it went to O.T. they were gonna go to versus. versus is on standby for every game on nbc apparently. the problom was that they only mentioned it ONCE, at the end of the third period during the intermission. ppl didnt realize it (peeing, getting a cream soda, wat have you) and they missed it. they shoulda said something during the game, "in the event" kinda thing. so obviously the NHL is very dumb and continue to piss the only fan they have..THE TRUE ONE.

Drafting Hugh Jessiman in 2003 12th overall is starting to prove to be a real killer.

Sather drafted Jessiman ahead of other first rounders including Brent Seabrook, Steve Bernier, Zach Parise (UGHHHHHHHH) Ryan Getzlaf (DOUBLE UGHHHHHHHHHH) Mike Richards, Corey Perry and Patrick Eaves.

He was able to steal Nigel Dawes in the 5th round that year, but damn, if we had Zach Parise right now???

ATTENTION ALL RANGER FANS

EFFFFFFF YUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Hye RFS,

Right back at ya!

Hey RFS,

Did you hear the NHL draft is in prime time this year?

Friday night, June 22nd, 7pm on Versus, should be pretty cool.

Oh damn, I keep forgetting you guys gave away your first two picks!!

sorry, forget I said anything

Hockeysfuture.com came out with their assessment of the overall state of each NHL team’s system of prospects.

They rate the Rangers 6th best, while the Isles somehow made it to 15th.

It's obvious RFS is a bitch and is probably still crying about the refs and Witt's so-called goal. Enough already, you got spanked. Worry about signing someone that actually want to play for the ISLES and cutting dead weight like your 8 million dollar man, Yashin....he sucks,,,and you have to deal with that for a few more dismal years....You better hope DP can stand on his head..(for 14 more years)hahahahahaha........

I heard from Weinman's blog you are getting knee surgery Steve, get well! ;)

Steve, Good luck with the knee surgery. Hopefully, you're back on the beat at Newsday soon. I'm a Newsday subscriber as well as a Rangers subscriber, and my daughter devours everything you write about the Rangers. All the best, and see you in September. :-)

Bettman has ruined this league. Why is the Eastern Conference on a mid day with horse racing at 5:00? Why isn't it on at night. I

It is a championship game. Would the NBA out a conference on mid day with baseball on also?

There is nothing else on a Sat night. What does NBC have to lose.

The NHL is all screwed up. It needs the Rangers and Kings to get better quick. These are the 2 biggest markets and the NHL suffers without them.

Bettman messed up with Crosby. He should be playing in Manhattan over Pittsburgh. Where could the NHL benefit from more? Pittsburgh or NYC?

This league needs to think about how they market their players. If poker gets higher ratings than the NHL should be on PBS then.

?

Sec 414 - Bettman had nothing to do with the draft lottery going to Pittsburgh. Its a lottery, not a "pick which team gets to choose 1st overall, cause our league is in shambles and we want a major market to get the 1st pick."

Anywayz - just a big of side info: No team with a european captain has ever won a stanley cup, so Im gonna say The Ducks (I hate that name) are gonna win it all. I'll be rooting for Ottawa though.... it would be nice if the cup was won by a Canadian team, you know, the country that actually gives a sh!t about hockey and would NEVER pull a heidi, like NBC did.

I'll do you one better - I'm rooting for Ottawa so that people will stop with the 'no team with a European captain has ever won a Stanley Cup' line.

effigy,

im not defending here, just giving the facts. the nbc fiasco was far from the "heidi" game, its a terrible comparison. i wasnt alive or very, very young to have watched it, but i know it wasnt aired anywhere after they took it off. at least they put it on versus, unlike the hiedi thing. where they messed up was not telling you more than once, that they were gonna move it there. besides any intelligent hockey fan with common sense shoulda realized, when u saw the horsies runnin around, that the game would be moved to versus. even the NHL isnt that dumb to completely stop airing the game on tv.

as far as the crosby thing..it was fairly obvious he was GIVIN to pittsburgh. the franchise was going bankrupt, and needed something to bring it to life. so the lottery is a sham as it is in the NBA. its a pass to the commishes office to do wat they want. last night the NBA did the exact same thing, portland is on the verge of bankruptcy, so they will give them that oden guy to save the franchise.

just a question... why do all canadien residents want a canadien team to win the cup?...if theres a rivalry between teams, why do there fans want that rival to win..i dont get it..if the isles were in the finals, ill be damned if i wanted them to win..if u look on TSN, leaf fans are prayin for sens to win...same thing with hab fans. do they hate the US or something?...

...can the rangers make a damn trade yet!!!!

tj-Canadiens consider hockey "their game" and they don't want the US involved, eventhough 24 of the 30 NHL teams are in the US and 4 of the original 6 were as well. Go figure.Do they hate the US? I think when it comes to hockey they do.

TJ I agree with you on the Pittsburgh getting Crosby. Without him that team is in big trouble and we know Betteman gave Crosby to them so that Pittsburgh can stay there and get a new arena.

TJ - it's because Canadians have something called 'national unity.' And a lot of that unity is built on hockey. They don't hate the US, they just want to see one of their own win.

All this stuff about the draft being rigged is ridiculous.

tj -

I think the NBC fiasco is a lot more like 'Heidi' than you think. It's true that the Heidi game wasn't available after the plug was pulled, but for the 50 million cable homes that have no access to Versus, it was simply... "no overtime for you!!!" And those are precisely the viewers that the NHL needs to target to beef up the sport's popularity - one's that might live in a "non-hockey" market who were watching the game and had a chance to see one of the most exciting moments in sports - a series winning OT playoff goal. This was another consequence of Bettman's flawed leadership.

About the Canadian team thing... Keep in mind that hockey is Canada'a national sport. It's a valid perception that if a Canadian team wins, it would mean much more to the fans of that country than if a US team wins. After all, our TV ratings are below 2.0 for playoff games, so a Canadian fan would be justified to think that even if a US team won it wouldn't be that big a deal for US fans. It would be like wasting a stanley cup on people who really don't appreciate it. Obviously that's not entirely true, but it's a justified perception based on the low popularity of hockey in the US. And frankly, I've got to think that a cup victory iss gonna mean much more to a kid north of the border than it would to a kid in Orange county California. That's why I'm pulling for the Sens.

i guess if i were canadien i would understand it. still, rivals are rivals in my eyes.

just a note if any1 missed it, brian leetch retired today. i saw it on espn the bottom line thing. cause no1 will actully COVER a great hockey player hanging em up..THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES LEETCHIE!!

Yeah man Leetch's number will hopefully be in the rafters sometime next year at MSG. Too bad he couldn't have come back for one year in NY. Oh well. The young kids are looking good including this Dupont kid. Not bad at all.

I too will be pulling for Ottawa. I just can't bare to see a team from Anaheim,CA win over a Canadian club.

Thanks for everything Leetchie! A class act and the greatest Ranger ever, not to mention the best American-born hockey player. #2 HAS to go up to the rafters next season.

The above post is obviously some isles fan. Freakin idiot.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't say that.

Same moron as always.

Isles fans hate Leetch because he destroys their B.S. argument that the Rangers bought the Cup in '94.

Too bad BITCHES!!!

Leetch retirement ceremony is definitely a night I will not miss.

The Greatest Ranger ever.

Unfortunately Leetch is not the best #2 in the city. That goes to Jeter, hands down.

real Jim from Woodbury ... your stupid

Leetch is "the greatest Ranger ever" (as described by 'real Jim')

When evaluating players in the prime of their career...

...If given the choice between Trottier and Leetch, any sane hockey fan (assuming 'real Jim' is sane) would choose Trottier.

...If given the choice between Bossy and Leetch, any sane hockey fan (assuming 'real Jim' is sane) would choose Bossy.

...If given the choice between Billy Smith and Leetch, any sane hockey fan (assuming 'real Jim' is sane) would choose Billy Smith.

Therefore, one must conclude (along with 'real Jim') that at least three of the Greatest Islanders ever are GREATER than the Greatest Ranger ever.

Logic 101-

Logic? You just used two forwards and a goalie to compare to the best defenseman the NY area has ever seen. Great logic. For your next feat why don't you compare a catcher to an outfielder.

Typical dumb Islander fan, no hockey knowledge.

...If given the choice between Denis Potvin and Leetch, any sane hockey fan (assuming 'real Jim' is sane) would choose #5 Denis Potvin.

I knew some Isles fan would come back with that golf ball helmet D-man.

Look, Potvin was great, one of the best there has ever been. But he played during a era when slow, plodding forwards were the norm. Leetch played when speed was the norm. You can't even compare the two. It's like trying to compare Johnny U to Peyton Manning.

I'd still take Leetch.

Islanders fans really are all 5 hairs away from being baboons.

What are we supposed to do, not talk a little about Brian Leetch the day after he announces his retirement?

Just shut the hell up and get out of this blog already!geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezus!

I am a very board Islander fan, Brian Leetch announced his retirement, let me go to the Newsday Rangers blog and start an argument about who was better, Billy Smith or Brian Leetch.

You people are wackos.

leetch never beat his wife like potvin did.

did potvin ever win conn smythe?

Potvin never won the Conn Smythe, Leetch won it.

Potvin won 3 Norris trophies, Leetch won 2.

so that to me makes them equal at best. considering the conn smythe is the MOST important individual award in hockey, leetchie gets a slight edge over wife beater boy.

argument over!!!
