Matt Zaba, a goaltender from Colorado College who was not signed by the Los Angeles Kings, was grabbed by the Rangers as a free agent and will vie for a spot in either Hartford or Charlotte.
Zaba, 24, was drafted in 2003 in the eighth round by the Kings.
He played in 33 games with Colorado this past season, was 15-13-4, had a 2.39 goals against average and a .917 save percentage and was named team MVP.
Meanwhile, radio silence on the Mike Peca front.
That could mean the two sides are talking.
Peca's agent, Don Meehan, was out of his Ontario office and was expected to return tomorrow. A Rangers representative did not return a message inquiring about the status of the Peca situation.

Does the signing of Zaba mean Montoya is on the move?
I wouldn't read anything into the Zaba signing as far as Montoya is concerned. The Rangers were short on goaltending depth to begin with, and with the less-than-stellar Valiquette apparently winning the backup role in NY, I can't see the Rangers trading the only prospect in the system who could step in and steal some games should Lundqvist go down for an extended period and Valiquette falter. Neither Holt or Zaba are close to being capable NHL goaltenders, and the Pack's expected backup, Miika Wiikman, will be playing his first season in North America on an AHL contract.
Oooohhhh.... we Islander fans are real impressed with your signing of ZABA... ! Wow what a signing... we're scarred now!
Dynasty,
If I were you, I'd be more "scarred" of a line of Shanahan-Drury-Avery crashing into Dipietro every chance they get.
I think the Rangers are going to move Montoya regardless of this college goalie they signed yesterday.
Montoya's contract sucks. Not sure was Sather was thinking about when he signed him to a deal that would give him 1.8 mil if he played on the big squad.
Sean are you kidding me? They are going to move Montoya. Think of all the goaltenders they have signed and drafted over the past year and a half. This signing definitely hints at the Rangers intent to eventually move him.
I was thinking that but I dont think they are gonna force the trade just to get rid of him.
