One victory isn't a winning streak

.....And coach Tom Renney cursed at players during practice today who he perceived as taking drills lightly.

Nice to see and hear.

Sean Avery skated in a yellow (non-contact) jersey, but is a week away.

Chris Drury, who blocked a shot with his foot during the 2-0 win, didn't skate, but Renney said that was due to a dental appointment.

Lost in all the words and videotape of the scoring drought and Henrik Lundqvist's outstanding play are the penalty-killers, who rank fifth or sixth in the league (checking on that).

That's the subject of my piece in tomorrow's paper, which will be here on newsday.com as well.

UPDATE: Thanks to all who read so carefully and corrected me. Last night, I thought I wrote Prucha's "first assist on Dawes' goal" and in my haste, wrote "first point and assisted on..." It happens on deadline when you're processing hundreds of words and numbers. I've fined myself $50.

Later...

Yea, if their power play was half as decent as their penalty kill, they might be undefeated, haha. I think Drury has looked especially good on the PK. But I think it all really comes down to our number one PK'er, Henrik Lundqvist.

The team defense has been outstanding and Hank is playing at the top of his game. I really believe the scoring is going to start coming, especially with the stretch of home games coming up and the consistent approach last night of driving to the net, both with and without the puck. They need to continue that on Saturday. Glad to see Renney showing some fire as well.

I'm hoping that once the goals come they are going to come in bunches, I'm hoping.

By the way, anyone else notice that someone finally got rid of the ridiculous looking bottom to the jerseys. No more onesies, they actually look like hockey sweaters again. Thanks to the equipment managers for that one.

Anyway, big win last night, now let's continue to build on that. A win against Torrana on Sat would feel good.

Zip, one question. I assume if they bring a body up from Hartford that Hollweg goes back to the 4th line and Bourrett, Moore, etc. skates on the 3rd line. Any idea?

Thank god Renney is yelling out there. He needs to get a bit more emotional to motivate this team. Last night was a great game to watch, but King Henrik certainly kept them in it. He was outstanding... as was Brodeur for that matter.

Renney needs to drop the silent guy thing completely and freak out a bit and I think these guys will start to respond. It's also good to read that Perry is putting these guys through tough drills and making them grind it out in practice.

More of that and I believe this team will respond positively. Toronto coming in will be a great test for a team that appears to be starting to head in the right direction.

which players didd Renney curse at? He doesn't have the guts to curse at anyone making over 3 million.

"Zyuzin, 29, landed on the IR because of a strained muscle in his backside."

LMAO

I am really sick of Sam and Joe. Yes they are not ho,mers like many other announcers I heard, but damn are they boring and not funny. They lack energy, enthusiasm, sharpness, wit, excitement. And I am so sick of those trivia followed by redundant and recycled "jokes" about Sam running to the library.

Mike,

guess what? you could go to the games and not have to listen to them.

chris drury is a phony !

You think they are bad... try the announcers from Carolina. I just got Center Ice and watched a game broadcast from there the other night. WOWSERS.. talk about bad announcers.

Team showed some spark last night... Lets keep it going against the Leafs tomorrow night!

"guess what? you could go to the games and not have to listen to them."

that would be a big waste of time and money.

Hey Mike,

then guess what!

Go root for another team, we do not need you.

Only 50 bucks Zippay? Come on! You work for a big outift newspaper. You can afford more than that! I know it's not the New York or LA Times but it's not like you work for the Cheektowaga Times, Press and Sun Bulletin, or Times Herald Record.

"You think they are bad... try the announcers from Carolina."

Even worse try Rick Jenerette and his crony from Buffalo. They have to be the worst.

Sorry guys, but JD was the absolute WORST homer of any announcer I've ever heard. His lovefest with Richter was nausiating and the guy would never say a bad word about the rangers.

Jimbo and why on earth would anyone need you?

MIKE listen to Dave Maloney on the radio. The timing is not in sync with the TV, thanks to the genious of MSG, but Dave is one of the best. ....ZIP...you're not the only one who forgets to give credit to PRUCHA. Maybe it's time to do a story on him and show where he stands among young guys in the league. All he needs to to learn is Avery's edge & trash talk, and protect himself with his stick. Guys will stop running him like he's a practice dummy.

The occasional times I to listen to the Rangers on the radio, I like listening to Maloney.

My only problem with him is that he says the word "AGAIN" over and over.

At least 40 times a game, he says it.

Better then Michelletti that we tossed over to you that asks a question everytime he opens his ignorant mouth...."Doesn't he"

Thank God he is off our telecast.

This is not a poke at the Isles but Potvin in Florida is the worst I've ever heard. Michelletti is not much better. Dave Maloney is very good. He should have replaced JD.
