Live from RBC: Dawes on power play...

Nigel Dawes, with five points in the last seven games, will be on the power play with Gomez and Drury.

He has one power-play goal, against New Jersey on Oct. 25.

But Dawes has a quick release, a heavy shot and certainly can pass. This is his first career game against the Hurricanes.

Walked past Dan Girardi on the bike after I mentioned to someone that it appeared the Mets had landed Johan Santana, and he perked right up. "The Mets got Santana?"...Girardi has eight points in the last 15 games. He has a goal and assist against Carolina this season...

More from the press box later...

The Rangers got killed by the refs in that period. How do the Hurricanes end up on the PP after Gomez gets driven head first and from behind into the boards. That was worse than what Kovalchuk did last week, yet no penalty. That diving call on Jagr was ridiculous. Let's hope they can get out of their with a win despite the guys in the striped shirts having a terrible night.

Yup. The call on Walker was blown, but the call against Jagr was one of those "must calls", just like the call on Shanny. They were bull spit calls but they had to be made because the ol zebras had to get control of the game before someone got hurt. They blew the call on Orr too, he should have gotten two for at least roughing on the hit from behind...and Micheletti couldn't get it right. He said that "Brookbank should have gotten an instigator because he had the gloves off before Orr", which was completely wrong. He tapped Orr and Colton dropped the gloves and started throwing punches before Brookbank even dropped the stick...

yup. They are going to blow this one. That had absolute control of it and now they are down one...

...and 68 going off yet again on another bad penalty. When is he going to learn to keep his hands on the knob of the stick and the blade on the ice?

Good call Dan they did miss the one on Orr, If they can find a way to win this one maybe they can get on a roll.

So they win two games against Atlanta and suddenly people are deluded into thinking they're back on track. There are still major breakdowns on defense and virtually no goal scoring at all. This isn't a first round exit... this isn't even a playoff team as it is constructed

they cannot score.. how can this team have the 28th offense in hockey?????????????

a 4th line that cannot score ever and 3 avg at best lines.

what a big disappointment this team is, they added Drury and gomez to a team that lost in the quarterfinals and are worse then last yr..

terrible...........

make a friggin trade.....

Vincea - I personally like the blake idea (for the right deal)...say Malek and Montoya....we could use some grit on the blue-line.

Would also like to see Shanny play with Drury and Straka......moving Prucha back with the Dubinsky and Dawes....

Somethings gotta give. We need to do something and right now a trade is looking like the only feasible option. Considering on a few days rest and we look terrible especially in the passing department.

Timbo I would hope if they trade Montoya they get more than a rental player who is ready to retire. I agree that Dubi, pru and Dawes should be put back together

agreed....would rather see Montoya and Rozival and a mid-teir prospect for McCabe....sounds like Toronto is going to be active before the deadline and McCabe #'s are attractive over the next three years....

Defense is not a problem with this team it is scoring. With all the talent up front they score 2 goals a game. Straka, Jagr, Drury, Gomez, Shanny, Dawes should score at least 3 goals a game. This team is not a good team when you win 2 then lose one. Too streaky for me.

1 goal tonight is garbage. This team needs a overhaul up front.

ESPN.com mentions Shea Webber and Redden as possible d-man which might be moved at the deadline.....we are deep on the blue line and i wouldnt mind seeing us move a few prospects for a guy like Redden who will still be a top 10 d-man in the league for another 3+ years....

Here's my post allstar game Rangers lineup:

Shanny-Gomez-Straka
Prucha-Dubinsky-Dawes
Avery-Drury-Hossa
Hollweg-Betts-Orr

Notice, no Jagr. Doesn't Ottawa want a top 6 foward? I say trade him there for Phillips, Volchenkov, or Redden (who should be available because he is a free agent next season and it is unlikely Ottawa can resign him), and a prospect/draft pick. Redden can solidify the defense, officially push malik out of the lineup, and improve the often anemic powerplay.
1st line- Shanny is at his best when someone is feeding him the puck, and Gomez is more then willing to. And shanahan is also willing to shoot, UNLIKE Jagr. Playing straka here also makes 2/3's of this line very fast and adds the benefit of another player to feed shanny the puck.
2nd line- All I have to say is give the 3 of them consistent ice time (15 minutes plus, including PP), and they will produce.
As for the 3rd line, don't get me wrong, I love sean avery, but he is a glorified 3rd line player. He's at his best when he's allowed to go out there and just focus on hitting and getting the other team off their game. This 3rd line would play against the other teams top line effectively, and would do a decent job offensively to, as they would drive to the net, screen the goalie, and forcheck, which ½ the team currently refuses to do. As for Drury, my logic is this: he made his name as a defensive player, and right now he is lost on both ends of the ice. Tell him to go out there and just focus on playing defensive hockey. Match him up against the other teams best center. If the defense comes, im sure the offense will follow. He's never been a guy an offensive attack is built around, and quite frankly, I do not know what Renny was thinking playing him on the point on the PP to start the season, he's an in front of the net guy. As for Hossa, while he wont score, I think he can be a very effective checking line player. However, if he does not work out I would call up Callahan or Moore to take his spot.
4th line- less ice time, more like 5-8 per game instead of 8-12. Also, let Hollweg and Orr focus on hitting and fighting. Betts can play, so if one of Orr/Hollweg is in the box, he could mix in every 4 shifts with one of the other lines.
A Jagrless team like this would be much more entertaining to watch and I think more effective overall, especially of Ottawa gave us one of those 3 defensman in exhange for jagr. If it was Redden in return, this would also help the PP as well as solidify the defense. Oh, and give Shanahan the C and Drury an A.

yeah Ricky brilliant idea trade jagr and put Hossa in the lineup since he is a great scorer...

where do you idiots get these ideas???

the rangers are the worse scoring team in hockey, I said 28th I was wrong.. marel hossa is the key, right ricky?????????

call up cally, add hossa to the lineup and sit the 4th line unless they are playing the likes of Philly... trade malik and someone for 1 more decent d man and that is it....

also tell every moron on the team to go north and south and any backwards pass will mean a sitdown on the bench...

I wonder how this game would have ended if those crap refs made that boarding call against Ottawa?
Or not made the call on the none hooking call against Shanny?
Would it have translated into the second, or am I looking for excuses because my favorite team stinks to high heaven!

all is lost. fire sale!

Apart from taking big draws, Drury seems lost. Just like when he was on Calgary, he's just lost in no mans land.

Once I saw Shanny score, I thought, ok, we have to win this game 1-0. Sure enough, they couldnt score again. Honestly, you have to point the finger at Tom Renney (and the players of course). If he cant come up with a way to get them to create some offense, and get players to the front of the net, then why bother ? why not just keep 5 guys back ?

It killed the Rangers to get rid of Nylander and other Check players who clicked with Jagr. This is a huge reason for their downturn. And then all the hoopla about signing Drury and Gomez, hurt Jagr's feelings and has affected his game I believe

these a fire sale coming folks. get ready to end this season in the baesment!

hopefully they do it right, unlike when they unloaded Leetch, and got lukewarm talent in return thats not on the current roster.

what good is having chris drury? he stinks

How many goals did the Ranger's best offensive players have on their sticks last night, only to shoot wide?

How can premiere offensive players, at the most important time in their season, come up short on chances like that?

Dan at 21:12 was not me (ie Dan at 20:27, and 20:29), and no Dan at 21:12 we are not deluded into thinking that just because they beat the Thrash twice means anything. On any night, any team can beat any other. It's consistency over time that is needed, and two games pre all-star break is hardly consistency. With each win we are cautiously optomistic and then get peeved when they drop two after winning two...AND who could think that any team is going to make the playoffs with a record at the allstar break of 24-21-6. After last nights game they are only a game and a half above .500. With a tough schedule ahead if guys don't start putting the puck in the net that number is only going to go down
