And there's the game, with Dubinsky roofing an empty-netter with 59.1 to go. 5-3 Rangers, 4-1 series win. Rangers got stronger on the puck over the final three minutes, with Callahan and Dawes ragging a full minute behind the Devils net.
Nice rally by the Devils, who looked defeated when it was 4-1. But the better team won this series. I'll turn you back over to Zip for the days between now and the next series. Good night from Newark!
9:53
Rangers getting some counter plays, Gomez barely misses on a 2-on-1. Now 3:11 left and the Devils look a bit gassed from the effort the last 20-plus minutes.
9:50
Loud, sustained "Let's Go Rangers" chant from behind Brodeur, who made a nice stop on a blast by Drury. 5:54 left.
9:47
OK, that penalty shot save is probably a little bigger. Initially thought it was a questionable penalty-shot call when Girardi took down Madden, but the replay won me over.
Madden tries to slide the puck between Lundqvist's pads, but he didn't hit the hole with his shot. 6:36 left in the third, Devils are gunning for the tie and getting closer.
9:45
Great blocker save by Lundqvist on Gionta from the left circle. Save of the game thus far. Gionta looks skyward afterwards.
9:41
Rangers get their first scoring chance, with Avery hustling to beat Salvador wide but missing the net. 10:12 left and it's still a lot of chipping the puck out, chipping the puck in and hoping for the Rangers. Not much counterattacking.
9:39
Good shot by Zajac and a tough arm save by Lundqvist... Over 8 minutes in, 5-0 Devils in shots and the Rangers are scrambling plenty. It looks like one long power play for Jersey.
9:35
Devils have carried the play still, 5:17 in. No shots for the Rangers yet.
9:29
Good start to the third for the Devils. Paul Martin gets off a good shot after some sloppy Rangers play down low, good save by Lundqvist.
9:09
Almost another bounce off a Rangers skate to tie it in the final minute of the second. Sergei Brylin's jam try goes off Drury's skate, but stays out. Period ends with the Devils springing back to life thanks to two bounces off Rangers.
Still, the Rangers lead by a goal going into the third, which is tough to overcome for anyone. Devils will need to take advantage of their breaks again, perhaps another PP which is sure to come their way in the third.
Rangers are 20 minutes away from the series win.
9:01
4:23 left in the second, and the Devils do nothing with the rest of the PP. Really, the Rangers are still dominating this game, which Tom Renney may want to remind them of after the second. Better passing, better flow -- just gotta shake off the bad breaks.
8:58
Another lucky bounce and it's 4-3. Elias fairly whiffs, but it hits off Tyutin and slides by Lundqvist. Still 1:08 on the Devs PP and it's a one-goal game, with two lucky breaks.
8:55
Very weak call by Marouelli on Dubinsky for interference... Everyone in this series has been hitting guys as the puck goes by. No consistency.
And now it's a 2-man advantage for 1:31 as Staal goes off for tripping Zubrus. 7:03 left in the second... Things are getting interesting again.
8:51
8:32 left in the second and Salvador's goal is the Devs' only shot of the period.
Oh, and a correction: Brodeur was slow with the LEFT pad on Staal's goal on Wednesday. My bad.
8:48
Well, perhaps that bit of incredible good fortune will wake the Devils up. Bryce Salvador just slaps one in while going off for a change and it hits Brandon Dubinsky and dips about a foot, under Lundqvist. 4-2 with 10:04 left in the second.
8:45
It is quiet in here, folks. And the Devils have simply given up in front of Brodeur, who is I'm guessing a goal away from sitting the third period. His teammates should be ashamed.
On the other side, the Rangers will be rolling four lines and six D and keeping things clear in their own zone.
We're now 8:37 into the second, still no SOG for the Devs.
8:40
Incredible laziness by Zubrus among others in the Devs zone, and Chris Drury rips a one-time feed from Dawes over Brodeur. 4-1, and I think the Rangers can start making plans for a road trip to Pittsburgh or Montreal next week. Still 13:42 left in the second, but the Devils look deader than dead.
8:37
If Ryan Hollweg had some more skills, it'd be 4-1. Nice feed from Betts for an open shot from the slot, good save by Brodeur. We're four minutes in and the Devils have zero shots on goal. Not exactly a flying start.
8:17
3-1 Rangers, end of one. Devils did lots of things right, but had almost nothing to show for it. With the back-to-back power plays, the Rangers could have been gassed, but they held their lead and converted their only other chance of the period.
Gomez has three goals and seven points in the series. Guess that whole free-agency thing worked out OK.
As for Brodeur... The second goal was another bad one, again with the right pad not flashing fast enough. Long road back for the Devs tonight, probably too far with the way their luck is going. Lundqvist wasn't terrific that period, but he'll shore it up.
8:13
Gionta off for slashing. Rangers second PP here with 1:23 left in the first; another goal and the last 40 minutes could be a lot of Sean Avery getting pinballed around the ice and the Rangers trying to protect Lundqvist.
8:10
Rangers get completely outplayed, outchanced and out-hungered for 10 minutes... And it's 3-1. Great play by Avery coming off the end boards with patience, forcing Brodeur to leave his feet to make the first save. Gomez is right there to lift the rebound in. Three Rangers goals on seven shots over 18 minutes.
This could get ugly.
8:06
Devils had the puck in the Rangers zone for the entire PP there, and had the Gomez-Callahan-Girardi-Tyutin PK unit out for over 90 seconds. Callahan whiffed on three different clearing tries, but the Devs best chance went off of Dainius Zubrus' stick and wide.
David Clarkson then hits the post after the PP. Devs are upping the pressure with 6:07 left in the first.
8:00
Devs don't do much with that PP, but they get another one immediately with a too-many-men call on the Rangers. Second one against them in two games. Dawes came off the bench and tried to grab the puck with his glove, and Marouelli raised his hand immediately.
7:57
Chance for the Devs to show off their PP with Backman off for a borderline hook. Devs had 3 PPGs at the Garden.
7:54
They've played 7:48 and the Rangers have two goals on four shots within a 1:40 span. Devils seemed to have the edge they needed with Gionta's goal off some sloppy Rangers play, but now they're behind again. Devils have led for fewer than 16 minutes this series.
7:52
No one may be able to stop Jagr tonight -- on the Rangers' first PP thanks to a dumb offensive-zone slash by Elias, Jagr stands along the half-boards for a good 7-8 seconds, then snaps a low shot under Brodeur's right pad. Same spot where Marc Staal beat Brodeur on Wednesday.
2-1 Rangers and Jagr has two points. Brodeur gives up another softie.
7:50
Jagr bumps Colin White, knocks Mike Mottau off the puck and feeds Michael Rozsival steaming down the slot untouched. Great shot, 1-1, just 18 seconds later, and the Devils fans are silenced.
7:49
Bad defensive zone play by the Mara-Backman tandem and the fourth line leaves Brian Gionta open in the slot to snap home Travis Zajac's pass. 1-0 Devs, 4:40 in. Big swing.
7:46
Devs' first shot is a doozy, though -- Jay Pandolfo in alone, great glove save by Lundqvist. Quick whistle by Marouelli blows the play dead even with a loose puck.
7:43
Only one Rangers shot, but they're controlling the play through 2:32. Devils are giving them way too much room.
7:40
Kerry Fraser and Dan Marouelli are the refs tonight. Should be far less shenanigans than in the previous games with a couple of vets.
7:24
Staple from the Prudential Center for Game 5... Lotta blue jerseys in the stands, as expected. No changed on either side. We're a few minutes away from the first potential clincher in this series.

As usual the Devils are getting away with murder.
TJ...don't expect an answer from bob...I'm still waiting for him to play GM and tell us who the "best" coach for this team is....its going on three weeks now
ooooooooooooooh baby!!!
what a sore loser marty is, what a fat toad...lmao!!!..and now ill say it, marty SUXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX..
thank god that series is over, yessssssssssss!!!!!!!!
Did Avery and Marrr-tee actually shake hands?
Also, anyone hear that nitwit Chico Resch saying it was "wrong" for the Rangers fans to cheer at the end of the game?
avery just called broduer "fatso" in the post game interview, lmao!!
also, regarding my dru/gomer coment earlier...i think all the jagr bashers need to shut they trap for a few days at least aswell...
...bob, where r uuuuuuuuuuuuu?????? :)----------------
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!! MUTHA EFFERS!!!!
All you need to say about Tom Renney was shown in the last minute of the game, during a stoppage, Renney with his arms around Nigel Dawes and Ryan Callahan and all three of them laughing and the coach patting them on the back.
Callahan in the last 2 minutes was AMAZING!!!
I wouldn't trade Ryan Callahan for any player on the Devils, NOT ONE OF THEM.
YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy it boys, might be a week off, this one was for all if us on here who had to battle the Debbie Downers and some of the other morons on this blog.
Vince and Lenny, rejoice!!!
You guys love this team just as much as we do, this, is a great night!!
12 more wins to go.
Yeah Dude you won alot. What an A hole you are.
And what a chicken shiiit you are!
LOL
I love these guys too afraid to post who they are!
No matter how much the Rangers win you're still the biggest tool on this blog.
Sorry for not posting more, now that spring is here between golf, my softball league where I manage and am chief of umpires plus I am certified to do girls high school softball, just can't find the time but I saw that note by Duede and wanted to acknowledge it.
The youth is served and coming through big time for the Rangers.
Wonder who they play in the next round? Probably Pittsburgh
Impressive 1st round win boys......congrats to the true fans here....
And Eric...Chico's comments about "wrong" were directed to Devil fans for allowing so many Ranger fans to buy tickets to the game. He was blasting stay at home Devil fans and in effect giving credit to the Ranger fans for filling the Rock.
just put bob in the lil box... "The Majority" my azz, what a chicken chit cant take the deserved abuse loser you are b00b
Tool number 2 speaks up
Actually, Islander505, they weren't since he prefaced it by saying that he was guilty of being a homer and just "didn't think the Devils deserved to hear that" in "our building."
Eric,
I won't risk the wrath of overstaying here and belaboring the point.
I'll just say that I doubt Chico was proposing that the NHL pass a rule prohibiting "visiting" fans from cheering their team at the conclusion of a victory such as this.
Back to my golfing blog.
wow lenny, your one busy guy.
thx 505, it truly is a relief this series just ended...after going to games 3 and 4, this game took even more out of me. thnk heavens we got a week off to recoup
Jagr was a machine in this series....he turned this game around very early tracking the puck down on Rozi's goal.
For Callahan to kill the clock like he did in the last two minutes of the game was unbelievable. He never takes a shift off and you can tell he's a sponge learning as much as possible from guys like Shanny and Dru.
I have to admit, when Gomez was with the Devs, I always thought he was a little immature, but seeing him play and hearing his interviews now, there is no question that he is a strong leader and great team player. That said, he has to accept some credit for playing his a$$ off in this series instead of deflecting it toward Jersey all the time.
If Boston comes back and beats Montreal, we are getting the Philly-Caps winner, probably be Philly.
Wouldn't that be something playing the Flyers next round? We'd have home ice!!
LETS GO BRUINS
Dude...it'll be interesting to see if Price bounces back from last night's drubbing. He did win a championship in the A, and was a world junior champion, so for that reason i think it's a longshot at best, but I'm game....GO BRUINS.
he called Brodeur "Fatso"???
bwaa-haaa-haaaa
This is why these live blogs are "pointless" like Gionta:
this guy describes Salvador's goal this way:
8:48
Well, perhaps that bit of incredible good fortune will wake the Devils up. Bryce Salvador just slaps one in while going off for a change and it hits Brandon Dubinsky and dips about a foot, under Lundqvist. 4-2 with 10:04 left in the second.
the puck hit Dubinsky, then Lundqvist, then the post, then Lundqvist, then trickled in .....
why not have these live blog-heads just watch the game at home on TV, their reporting would be more accurate .... all we get is: OOPS, my bad!
ugly
