4:43
Scuderi skips one off the boards and in with 16.7 left for a 2-0 Pens win and series lead. Renney gets poor marks for not using his time out before the PP, and then not putting at least one forward at the point when Lundqvist came off. Tyutin and Girardi aren't the puck-movers.
So, the Rangers have gone from three goals up midway through Game 1 to a two-game deficit heading home on Tuesday.
This was not a terrible game for the Rangers, neither was Game 1. But their defensemen are getting outworked and outhustled by the Pens forwards -- not just Crosby and Malkin, but Jordan Staal, Tyler Kennedy and Adam Hall.
Oh, and Avery got in some nonsense there, exchanging whacks with Fleury and then having Gill and Laraque smother him... Doubt that'll matter much on Tuesday, unless the Pens are coasting.
4:37
And there's another break for the Rangers. Gill squashes Avery, but I'm pretty sure Avery was already rubbing pads with Fleury. If the Rangers lose this one, or at least fail to tie, no one to blame but themselves with two power plays in the final six minutes. Should end up being a 6-on-4 at some point with Lundqvist pulled in a minute or so.
4:35
Not a break, there, obviously. Fleury never had full control, and the puck was skittering behind his pads when O'Halloran blew it dead. Power play didn't generate much, once again. Reminiscent of the standing-around drought the Rangers had late in the season.
4:30
May be the break the Rangers need -- Sykora clips Girardi with the high stick right in front of an official. Girardi lifted the stick initially, but there's the call nonetheless.
4:24
Bad job in the defensive zone by Gomez's line, with Backman and Mara. Rangers' D looks weary, especially in the offensive zone, where they're trying to make plays instead of trying to shoot pucks.
4:19
Well, shows you how good a coach I'd be -- Gomez uses some open ice and lax PP play by the Pens to generate a couple chances and some confidence, which carries over to Jagr's line on the first shift at even strength. Jagr had the puck alone in front for a split second, but couldn't go backhand-forehand fast enough.
4:15
Bad turnover in the neutral zone leads to a quick transition and another Pens PP, with Betts rightly called for a slash on Kennedy. Rangers would be best served by not doing too much except dumping it out to stay within a goal.
4:12
Solid kill, but the Rangers were looking sluggish before that. Good shift from Jagr's group, has to continue.
4:08
Accidental play by Girardi, but bank on the Pens going for the kill on this PP.
3:50
1-0 Pens after two. Rangers may get a crucial third-period PP, but will they do anything with it? Pens clearly have more jump up front, with Renney needing to cycle all four lines to keep his team fresh. Rangers' D is still not very crisp in its own zone, leading to good scoring chances for the Pens; Pens' D has been very responsible, and they will have three or even four guys back on every play coming out of the Rangers end.
Honestly, don't see the Rangers rallying for this one. Too many breakdowns to try and get chances.
3:47
Guess that's the answer -- keep the puck away from the point. Jamming the net may work, but Jagr's unit doesn't do that, so no results there.
3:43
And Drury does some embellishing himself to draw a bad holding penalty from Hossa -- can't take that hand off the stick -- so the Pens give one back. Rangers need Mara on the point here to generate some puck movement.
3:40
There's a few good chances for the Pens... Yikes. Staal buries one finally, with the Rangers PK absolutely gassed and running around. Great play by Malkin, some great passing earlier by Gonchar. Rangers cannot afford any penalties here. 1-0 Pens, and the Rangers are not exactly generating tons of chances.
3:37
Drury gets the hooking call, without actually hooking. Can't get that stick parallel. And with Drury off, the PK may suffer.
3:33
Pretty easy to say that Ryan Callahan has been the Rangers' best forward today. Kid nearly takes the puck from Gill, throws a big hit into a guy eight inches taller, then hustles back to get on side and fires a shot that Dawes has a rebound try for.
3:30
Good save by Fleury, but Jagr went too far with the puck there. Would've liked to see Straka shoot there. Not the first time I've thought that.
3:29
Rangers dodge one there after the giveaway by Tyutin. He, Girardi and Avery overstay their shift by a minute with the pressure by Tyler Kennedy's line.
3:25
And there's Avery giving an extra-hard hit to Crosby at the whistle... So the assignments are pretty clear. Not sure Shanahan can keep up with whomever Crosby's wingers are, though. Even Olczyk on the telecast said Prucha could get a turn in Shanahan's spot.
3:20
Clear now that Therrien has assigned Ruutu to disturb Jagr. Big hit there before... And Avery with a dirty hit on Rob Scuderi, even with no call. Dangerous play by No. 16. The pests are trying to goad someone into a bad play with the game scoreless still.
3:16
Refs missed one there when Jordan Staal bumps Jagr while holding a broken stick.
2:59
Scoreless after one. Rangers had a better start than in Game 1, but still gave up way too many chances, especially on the PK, and their PP didn't get enough going despite lots of offensive-zone time.
And now it's officially out of my hands whether Crosby dives -- Jagr has taken up the cause. Nice footage of Avery whacking Crosby on the hand there before the end of the period. Don't think Sid was embellishing that one. Ouch!
2:55
Gotta think Paul Mara has to be on one of these PP units... Backman-Rozsival and Tyutin-Girardi are inadequate. And Shanahan couldn't pull the trigger twice from in close.
2:53
Thought that hit by Gill was worse than it was. Good no-call there.
2:50
Overzealous hit by Ruutu, and that's two minors for the guy who'd been praised to the rafters by everyone in Pitt for maintaining his poise. He needs to hit Avery, not Gomez, if he wants to get away with those.
2:49
Can't imagine the Rangers bench will keep quiet about Drury getting sent flying in the neutral zone by a Pen I couldn't see. Guess that's not interference. Pens almost scored on the next chance before the end of the PP.
2:46
Well, that was a dopey play by Tyutin. Clearly he grabbed some of Crosby's jersey, so there's no doubt of a penalty call. Funny to see Jagr calling Crosby out there along the bench. 4 on 3 for the Pens, very dangerous with all that room.
2:43
OK, OK, Kris Letang didn't hear the whistle. You know you're gonna get popped if you shoot after a whistle. No harm done, 4 on 4.
2:41
Shanahan just not getting around the zone well there on the PP... That unit was shaky.
2:39
Large, juicy rebound by Fleury on a harmless Dubinsky shot helps the Rangers get another PP, with Ruutu going off for hooking.
2:37
Crosby's line, with Sykora out instead of Hossa, gets the Rangers scrambling around. Avery leaves Sykora alone in front and has to recover quickly to knock the puck away. Avery has a good setup in the offensive zone, but his defensive-zone work has been brutal this series.
2:34
Another strong forecheck play by Callahan sets up Drury, good save by Fleury. And Dubinsky surprised Jagr with that long pass just out of No. 68's reach.
2:31
Shaky PK by the Rangers, needing some quick thinking by Backman and Mara in front to prevent good scoring chances. Rangers have been having trouble clearing on the PK, and it's going to cost them.
2:30
How does Hossa get a breakaway on a PP? Never mind that -- why doesn't Hossa take a high shot there? Bad move by him, great stop by Lundqvist.
2:28
Unimpressed by Backman's work yet again, and Gomez makes a silly play to cancel the PP. Gotta just fly around Orpik there.
2:26
Great work by Dawes, Callahan and Drury draws the penalty, with Ryan Whitney tossing Dawes down in front of Fleury. Big chance for the Rangers on the PP 2:57 in.
2:24
Good shifts by the Dubinsky and Gomez lines, Avery back with Gomez and Shanahan. Renney maybe looking to get Avery going as much as get the Pens thinking that Superpest was revving it up today.
2:22
Rozsival a step slow there, letting Jordan Staal get off a good, close-in wrist shot. Rangers need to turn it around.
2:21
Avery-Drury-Callahan... Interesting.
2:18
Good thing NBC doesn't overdo the commercials here... No whiteout by the Pens fans today. Must be thinking ahead to the next round already. Jokes, jokes, Pens fans! Relax!
Funny, Pens talk about wanting a better start. They started very well. Rangers need better play in their own zone and to generate more chances over the first 20 today.
1:48
Staple back with you for Game 2, coming up in about 20 minutes. Lots of chatter the last couple days about Sidney Crosby and whether he's a diver (yes) and whether the refs encourage him (yes); Michel Therrien disagrees, not surprisingly. We'll see if his unprompted defense of Crosby -- which included a few shots at Tom Renney, who didn't really say anything to start this ball rolling -- will have an effect on today's game.
As Zip noted earlier, Peter Prucha's in for Colton Orr. Will he simply skate fourth line, where he might not be so effective? My two cents: Maybe throw him on the left with Callahan and Drury for a few shifts. Nigel Dawes has been good, but he's a better fit with Betts and Sjostrom than Prucha. I'm sure Renney will be reading this pregame.
Back with the puck drop and NBC's telecast in a few.

Staple,
You're a lousy excuse for a sportswriter. I guess Sid was diving when Avery jammed his stick in Sids face in the first period Friday right?
You really need to buy your seat... you aren't supposed to openly root from the pressbox.
If you want to look for a team that gets more calls than any other look at the Habs. History shows they get most of the calls.
I Hope you enjoy watching the Rangers destroy the game of hockey by playing the trap.
He isn't rooting for anyone. He simply mentioned that Crosby is supposed to be the best in the league, how's he get knocked down so much? Even the 10,000 Islander fans in America can figure that out.
It was Malone with the trip your too busy whining and rooting to even report the game right!
Gomez penalty was a bad call IMO
Jagr Mugging Ruutu along the boards there
They're all bad calls when they go against the rangers huh? Give me a break you Homers
Tell me that was a dive...go ahead!
homers
Im sick of these idiot nbc announcers defending "diving" Obviously 87 does it quite often if theyre talking about it so much. It doesnt matter what he does, everyones going to defend him. Its easy to get calls your way when the league wants so badly for your team to win. Where were all you black n gold fans a few years ago when you tanked a few seasons to get first rounder picks? Keep diving Crosby, you have great finesse and grace. What is hockey coming to...
I wonder if the MSG is goint to do a Blue out event and make everyone wear blue T-Shirts? And will they boo Crosby each time he has the puck?
You homer sportswriters going to mention the punk slashes that Avery gave to Crosbys left wrist at the end of the period? Of course not!
Keep crying that you're being outplayed and not getting calls...
Lousy freak'n sportswriting... you guys really need to get out of the press box and pay for your tickets like other teams FANS
Backman is brutal. Shanahan is standing way too close to Fleaury on the PP, if the puck does come to him he will not have enough space and will just put it into goalie. Renney's defensive trap is not working well. Tyutin is not playing great.
Right after I posted that I saw your comments where you acknowledged Avery's punk slashes. (And non-call)
The fact that Jagr is now complaining about Sid is comical... this game shouldn't be carried on NBC it should be carried on Comedy Central
"Rangers had a better start than in Game 1, but still gave up way too many chances"
How the hell is this a better start? They were much better in the 1st game's 1st period and were up a goal.
How are those Igloo nachos and IC Light? :-) :-)
BLACK N GOLD: You are officially an idiot - check the 2:59 entry. Better yet, go find a Pens blog to hang out at or some crappy $h|tsburgh newspaper site.
Cindy wasn't diving (for once) on the Tyutin play. But finishing the check off with a one-handed shove is only a penalty when you do it to Flounder.
Btw, is the NHL inserting a 'defending CIndy' clause into every TV contract? These guys are making me puke.
Also, BBB (baldy-between-the-benches) mentioned that THerrien is moaning because Shanny is setting up in the crease, adding, "and Meeeshell Therrien is right to complain to the refs about that" - are you kidding me baldy?
See, even Eddie Olchyk is saying to get Shanahan schmuck off 2nd line and put Prucha there.
DK1994...
Awe, are we starting to get the excuses lined up because we know the Rangers are imploding?
Call the Waaaaaambulance/
Wow... for all the 4h1t I give you... you're starting to report in an unbiased fashion... maybe that Pirmantti's sandwich was just what the Dr. ordered...
BLACK N GOLD: Buddy, can you tell the score? Rangers imploding?? I am fully convinced you dont watch the games at all.
pathetic overfanciness by Rozsival, Jagr and Straka.
DK1994,
maybe if you quit seeing things through blueshirt glasses:
http://www.nhl.com/scores/htmlreports/20072008/GS030222.HTM
Malone sucks, hopefully we don't sign him.
why was Lundqvist down early?
1-0 PENS!
And the rangers Implode! Yes DK1994... IMPLODE!
Rangers are almost unwatchable--soft, no flow, no offense, looks like game over. Penguins defense looks much more solid as well as the offense.
So Rangers fans...was that a "dive" by Drury?
Don;t be Homers now.... LMAO
Why is Tyutin on the PP instead of Staal or Mara or Girardi? Why is Prucha not on the PP?
You know your taking all the fun out of this with fair and unbiased reporting
"And Drury does some embellishing himself to draw a bad holding penalty from Hossa"
Maybe Rangers will have a better chance winning if they just play purely offensively run and gun, but without grandpa Shanahan.
Lundqvist is going to stop most of the shots and fewer shots would be defelected off his own defensemen.
Oh no... humility from the scribes... oh oh, now you have me worried.
"Honestly, don't see the Rangers rallying for this one. Too many breakdowns to try and get chances."
This scares me more than anything the Rangers have done on the ice... bad juju. :-)
Come on Rangers fans... your giving up already? This isn't any fun without you crying about Sid, or Bettman, or the officials
Can Moore and Byers be put into the lineup instead of Betts and Shanahan?
I'd like to see the H-B-O line reunited and inserted into the lineup for Game 3 at the Garden. The Rangers need to physically punish this team and force them to look over their shoulders at every turn. They're doing okay in total hits, but its the quality of hits that I'm concerned about.
There needs to be intimidation in the playoffs and the Ragners just aren't bringing it.
So Girardi throws Sykjora's stiuck onto his shulder, acts like he gets shot and we are short handed. Again, which team "dives"?
Renney's PP is a joke that is still funny after 3 years.
I want Renney's head to roll. I want to hang his head on my wall.
and he calls a time out NOW? wow, what an incompetent idiot.
Rangers are an absolute joke.
ignorant bandwagon "pen fans"...why dont you watch "your team" play and stop spending all your time on the opposing team beat writer's blog...plugs
SERIES IS OVER
garbage Shanahan got 19 minutes!!! holy crap, and again 0 points and zero hits.
i hate my team
fred wrote: "ignorant bandwagon "pen fans"...why dont you watch "your team" play and stop spending all your time on the opposing team beat writer's blog...plugs"
I've been a pens fan since 1973... I had season tickets from 83-95 then I moved to Long Island.
Yeah.. I'm "bandwagon"....
You Rangers fans are all mouth.
Can the rangers organization be anymore pathetic? From the players right down to their fans. Fans whining about the refs, Sidney, the ice, diving, blah blah blah, wah wah wah. Avery spears Fleury and then when Gill drops the gloves, Avery runs away and lets the refs shield him!!! HAHAHAHAH! PRICELESS!!
so Renney lovers, you still want him back next season? You still think he is the one to bring us the Cup?
"Avery spears Fleury and then when Gill drops the gloves, Avery runs away and lets the refs shield him!!! HAHAHAHAH! PRICELESS!!"
wow Gill is a real Man dropping the gloves with a player 9 inches shorter and 50 pounds lighter.
Season is over and hopefully so is Renney's career or life. Got to think green, hopefully Rainy pollution is history.
Avery's big move today was to sneak up behind guys and slash them in the hand at the end of periods. He got Crosby at the end of the first and got Fleury at the end of the game. Tough guy he is.
bob wrote: "wow Gill is a real Man dropping the gloves with a player 9 inches shorter and 50 pounds lighter."
Besides Chara, who in the NHL is Gills size?
BS comment. Avery is going to be a punk...Pens will make him pay.
Punks like Avery don't last... neither will the Rags
Come on dear ... go dry your eyes and come to the table .... we are having your favorite .... GOOSE EGG!!!!
Well, you can't ask for anything more than two power plays in the last 8 minutes. And, they kept passing, passing, passing. You can't score if you don't shoot. They deserved to lose this one.
Avery needs to step it up - and I dont mean in the scoring dept. He needs to be his old annoying self. Waiting until the horn has sounded after the second loss may be too litte too late.
Backman needs to come out of the line-up.
I don't know if we need to boo Cindy when he touches the puck at the Garden but everyone needs to bring signs or something to put the focus on the fact that CIndy is a diving loser.
"Some post-game thoughts, after I managed to locate the game on a grainy broadcast TV: Both teams played well. The Rangers were hosed by the early whistle on the non-goal in the third. The whistle clearly blew before the puck went in, but it shouldn't have been blown. New York will be ballistic over this, and erroneously claim that it cost the Rags a goal. There's no way to know that, as Fleury could have stopped after he heard the whistle, rather than reaching back for the puck. Nevertheless, the whistle *may* have cost New York the tying goal. New York will probably also continue to complain about Crosby, but they'll be totally wrong there. Avery is a total turd. Why go after the other team's goalie as time expires in your loss? There's no excuse for that. It doesn't help his team. It merely elucidates his excrementitiousness."
Dan H
Backman's offense is done and gone, why does he still get close to 6 minutes on the PP?
The Ranger scribes took A BEATING today on national TV for putting the focus of the series on whether Crosby dives.
NICE JOB GENIUSES....
Now your team is down 0-2 and Avery showed the frustration at the end of the game by spearing Fleury.
Keep up the great work spewing out of your keyboards boys
....Staple, Zip.....
THIS SERIES IS ALL ABOUT CROSBY DIVING AND GETTING SOFT CALLS.......
Brilliant.
If I was Renney, I wouldn't let either one of you guys within 2 miles of my locker room.
Looking forward to the next anti-Islander trash you'll write now to deflect your pain.
"Backman's offense is done and gone, why does he still get close to 6 minutes on the PP?"
Your only defenseman who has any offensive ability on the PP is Rozy.
Once again your best players are EX-Penguions
NEXT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOSERS WHINE IS COMING
I hope Renney commits suicide during the game, I hope he calls a timeout and commits suicide samurai-style, that will be the most genius coaching move he can possible do maybe that will motivate our veterans, they might even throw a hit..
After the Rangers lose this series because they made no attempt to improve an obviously week defence at the trade deadline, all the Renney/Sather suporters should all choke on the sh!t that came out of their mouths. Backman, Malik and Strudwick are not depth on defence. They're a joke played on us fans by an A hole of a GM. I look forward to all the excuses that the optomistic fools here will come up with for the Rangers only going one round again. Not to mention what the Rangers lost by not selling off their over the hill gang and building for next year and beyond. What you reep is what you sew Mr. Sather. Thanx for nothing!
way to attack the rangers fans for showing passion.........you anonymous jerk........but then again with a mind like that your parents probably havent associated with you in years so you should remain anonymous you gutless puke
next game I want to see:
Avery-Dubinsky-Jagr 21 minutes
Straka-Drury-Callahan 20 minutes
Dawes-Gomez-Prucha 19 minutes
4th line is nt helping much.
Seppuku is too honorable for Renney and rangers fans.
This what happens when you waste seasons on garbage like Shanahan, Malik, Strudwick, Backman, Straka, Betts, Orr, Hossa, etc, instead of playing young hungry kids. This is what happens when you settle for mediocre coaches just because they managed to get into the playoffs.
Jagr sure showed Milbury how good he is. Maybe next time he shows how he can throw his soft as butter 250 pound body around.
PS: do you actually believe anything that comes out of Stan Fischlers mouth.
He might be the worst Hockey Commentator i have ever listened to
bob, i dont see how Straka is a waste.
Why are you so down on Betts ? he is a good 4th line center. you cant have 4 lines of dubinskys and jagrs
Rangers power play is brutal. 40 seconds to set up, no one skates and gets open, jagr is left with no options half the time. Penguins power play was able to move the puck around so much more easily.
Betts is not a good 4th line center because his physical and agitation abilities are non existant. He can't score and really can't pass. All he does is play on the PK. I wanted him gone ever since October of 2005.
Straka is just another small, non physical, perimeter forward with overrated offensive skills.
"Rangers power play is brutal."
blame Renney that is how our PP has been ever since he became the coach.
Did anyone see NHL PLAYOFF HOCKEY THIS AFTERNOON??
At least we still have the islanders and potvin to root against.
First off-pens fans, find your own blog please, and do you really have so little a life that you feel the need to respond to every single little thing that happens during the game? Or is it just insecurity over the fact that you traded so much for Hossa and have no chance at keeping him?
Bob- I get that your annoyed, but how can you rip a guy like Shanahan? He's playing through God only knows how much pain right now and I place the blame squarely on Renny for that because of his refusal to rest him or cut down his ice time at all (why is he on the PK?)
Even though it won't happen, it would be nice to see prucha get some pp time in game 3, and please get tyutin off the point on the pp. At this point, playing jagrs pp unit is just a waste of time. All of them refuse to shoot. That unit should be broken up immediately because they might have just cost the Rangers the game and the series.

BTW, anybody else notice than Rangers almost always stink when they play in the Afternoon?
Shanahan has pain from what? He has done nothing as a Ranger besides taking Prucha's icetime on the PP and helping ruining a good player's career. He came here because nobody else wanted a soft, slow old sniper that keeps missing the net.
"At this point, playing jagrs pp unit is just a waste of time. All of them refuse to shoot."
totally agree, especially Jagr. I don't mind seeing Dubinsky on the PP though.
"Or is it just insecurity over the fact that you traded so much for Hossa and have no chance at keeping him?"
I hope they keep him, he is overrated and will not help them much.
on Betts--if he could hit hard and often like Hollweg or score like Immonen I would be happy with him, but he is just too one dimensional. We need a 4th line that can score or really hit or a combination of both. And obviously it has to be solid defensively.
Remember playoffs being physically brutal with injuries accumpulating and bodies falling left and right? What is this garbage we are watching now? 7 games and not even a single small injury. What are these players getting paid millions for?
Wow ,Zip you have to do something about all these losers on this site.
The better team won today, thats it. Do i like saying that no but it is true. Our PP is just awful and has been all year. What has to happen for the coaches to change it. With all the talent we are suppose to have why can't they put out a good PP unit ,it's disgusting. Shanny is a first ballot hall of famer and i love him, that being said he is done he can't skate with these guys. He should be benched or put on the 4th line and used on pp. The kids are still playing there hearts out and prove we have a good future. Jagr ,Straka are playing hard but it's not making a difference. The defense is very soft and needs an overhaul for next year. I'm sorry but I just don't see the rangers winning this series. I hope we win a couple games and someone smashes cindy. Hopefully Sather will learn from what is so flagarant short commings of this team and makes those improvements over the summer. Since it looks like we ar stuck with sather and renney for at least next year lets hope they bring in new assistants who have some sort of clue about the PP. Lets go Rangers kick some chicken butt on tue especially cindy.
Also What is the deal with Sjostrom? He is not impressing me at all and where is that blazing speed of his? Maybe he needs to play with a center who is not offensively challanged. But you really have to wonder because he really hasn't been doing much.
any truth to Avery being suspended for a spear at the end of the game?
What is our draft position this year?
Hey Ranger fans ... I'm not going to say anything to gloat or rub it in ... I'm a guest on your blog ....so even though Ranger fans come on the Islander blog and spew venom I'll show some respect as a fellow hockey fan ... here's a tip .... don't let this stuff get you down ... I'm reading your posts and you guys seem like how we were reacting when our injuries started piling up ... and calls going against us ... that had lot of Isles fans thowing in the towel.
So what? You're down 2 games. Have the Rangers ever won 4 games out of 5 this season? That's all you h
