Courtesy of the good folks at whowins.com, we present some fine stats regarding Game 1. Thanks to them.
In the history of best-of-7 NHL playoff games from 1939 through 2007,
inclusive, home teams (such as Pittsburgh) that trail by three goals 8:12 into the second period had a historical game record of only 4-78 (.049). Historically, then, there was but a 4.9% chance that the Penguins would prevail in Game 1.
***
Once before had the Penguins in Pittsburgh fallen behind 3-0, but
won a best-of-7 playoff game 5-4: In 1992 NHL Finals Game 1, the
eventual champion Penguins did so over the Chicago Blackhawks.
***
Pittsburgh scored one pair of goals 14 seconds apart and a
second pair of goals 20 seconds apart. In the history of best-of-7 NHL
playoff series from 1939 through 2007, inclusive, only once before had a
team scored two pairs of goals with the time between goals 20 seconds or
less in each pair:
In 1984 Stanley Cup Finals Game 3, the eventual champion
Oilers accomplished the feat in Edmonton against the four-time defending
champion New York Islanders. Edmonton scored its goals at 19:12 and 19:29
into the second period (17 seconds apart) and at 5:32 and 5:52 into the
third period (20 seconds apart) to turn a 2-2 game into a 6-2
lead. Edmonton would win 1984 NHL Finals Game 3 by a 7-2 score for a
2-games-1 series lead, which the Oilers would soon win 4-games-1.

i fail to see how these r cool stats
yeah, those stats pretty much piss me off
Love all these Pens fans on this blog all of a sudden...hey I've got an idea, if all the Pens fans on this blog and the 18 people who "crowded" the lawn outside the igloo last night, actually bought tickets, you wouldn't have a team that needs handouts from their city and the NHL to keep it from going into bankruptcy.
Enjoy it now, cause once Mario gets his dough, he'll ride into the sunset, and you will have to go to Hamilton or a warmer climate to cheer for your team.
Back to the series....if the Rangers start hitting Malkin hard, he'll disappear...just a prediction.
Tighten up the D and we're good.
LGR
ZIPPY, you gotta stop Staple from writing.
Prucha needs to take Shanahan's spot, Shanahan can play on the 4th line instead of Orr. Then again I think at this point Orrweg bring more to the table than old fossil.
GreatWhiteNorth,
Are you really as stupid as you sound? Or has living in that rat infested ethnic slum you call a city really eaten away all of your brain cells?
The Pens have more championships in the last 20 years than the Rangers have in the last 60.
Mario not only has his money, he also is building a new arena in Pittsburgh that has a thirty year lease.
Get some new material will ya?
ThePens Fans only show up when Pens win, otherwise we don't have to hear from them. Rangers needed to win 1 of the first 2. The Rangers will play better defensively, the Pens will not. So I expect one team to improve in gm 2, the Pens played as well as they can in gm one and made a comeback, Congrats, but the team that had rust on them was the Rangers. Before the series is over Crosby will be called for the diving. Probably in NY, if Therrien had to give a state of the union speech, then the Pens are concerned that the officials can be persuaded. Expect the calls to start coming for Jags as Therrien discussed playing strong and going through players, well that's what Jags does but he gets no calls. This series is long from over, so Pens fans talking smack is way premature.
msg4ever, don't worry about it.
In the end, no matter what happens, we're still NEW YORK CITY. They're still Pittsburgh. lol
They will NEVER be as famous or as cared-about as our city. Every round we run into more jealousy from other teams. We've had to deal with it for nearly 90 years now. It's a nice problem to have.

Black N Gold....you sold your building out this year FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YOUR FRANCHISE'S EXISTENCE...congratulations!...but where were you last year when Jim Balsillie was moving the Pens to Hamilton???? the only thing that saved you was Bettman, not you and the brotherhood of Penguins fans..
If you think that Mario is sticking around any longer than he has to, you are delusional....he is waiting until your new arena is built and then he is gonzo....
Msg4ever...you are bang on in regard to the diving, but unfortunately, the diving call will probably offset an interference call or a hooking call...after all, in the NHL's eyes you cant have one without the other.
LOL........
I fully expect, nay demand, a follow up blog/article from Baumbach, Rieber or Staple condemning Zip for shamelessy dredging up an Islander stat from the early 80's in order to satiate or otherwise keep the interest of Ranger fans who are drowning their sorrows and staying away from this board in droves (or scouring You-Tube for videos of Crosby dives) after the 1st game loss to the Penguins.
You all waste no time or effort in blasting the Isles for bringing up history from time to time in order to sell seats, and then you throw this inane stat about the Isles/Oiler series in 1984 after a Ranger loss.
Can you come up with anything MORE OBSCURE Zip?
Than that MEANINGLESS event from the end of the Isles DRIVE FOR FIVE????
What a cadre of friggin hypocrites you belong to.
I'm still having a hard time convincing myself that you are not the ice worm that infects these boards.
Wouldn't it have been far easier, and probably more effective, given the attention span of many of your readers, to simply post a headline that reads "POTVIN SUCKS"???....and leave it at that?
NY'er root for NY first, then follow the sport.
You all need to take a queue from your own players and "grow a pair".
I always thought the image of NY'ers was of being tough and working hard... now I see it's of expecting the rest of the world to hand you things you don't deserve just because of where you were born.
The game is played on the ice. Let 'em play.

What a bunch of crybaby fans.
th 2003-04 season, the Penguins had the least points in the league with 58.
The igloo was barren, team was bankrupt and they were either going to fold or move.
So, the NHL said, lets give them Malkin and Crosby and save them.
Now their fans boast about how great they are and how great fans they are.
Pretty funny stuff.
You're clueless.
They had the worst record in 2003-4, that much is correct. But they didn't even get the first pick. That pick went to Washington who selected Ovechkin.
And for the Crosby draft... as the team with the worst record from the previous season (pre-lockout), they should have been one of the top two teams to have the rights to pick Sid, instead the league changed the draft rules so that EVERY team had a chance to select Crosby.
So much for your conspiracy...
You may want to learn a little about hockey and NHL history before you open your mouth.
why do you keep posting under my name? too embarrassed by your lack of hockey knowledge to post who you usually post as?
Yeah, sure, they did the Crosby selection process behind closed doors so EVERYONE could see, yeah ok.
The league has been doing everything they can to keep that franchise afloat since 1967.
Just like 84 when they condoned the team losing on purpose to get Mario, just like 05 when the league granted them Crosby.
The league's charity case:
The Pittsburgh Penguins.
Watch the "The Afternoon Skate 4/26/08".
Dave Maloney gives a fair assessment of what happened in Game 1.
http://rangers.nhl.tv/team/console?hl=true
Oh yeah, that's right, the NHL did the lottery for Crosby right on TV, right for the public to see......oh wait, ummm, maybe not
There were those shots of Mario and Bettman coming out behind a curtain together a few times though, hmmmmm......
and in return for blowing Bettman, what did the Penguins win....
tell em Johnny......
Sidney Crosby awarded to Pittsburgh! and ther Penguins saved from extinction one again!!
When you can't compete on the ice..try third grade insults... you're clueless.
It's the Rangers that blow, they proved that yesterday and they'll suck again today.
If the Rangers win the cup, then Renney's so-called remarks about Cindy's penalty will be deduced as a ploy to throw off the opposition and get the refs in his corner. Only way his job should be saved IMO.
Anything less than the cup, especially if the ref bias continues against the Rangers, he'll be considered an a**hole for remarks like that and shuld immediately be fired.
I see other coaches react to bad calls and hit back at the opposition or refs in their post game shows. Must be working since they get the best of calls when they are playing the Rangers.
