Rangers sign defenseman Wade Redden

Well, fans, here's your PP quarterback.
Six years, average of $6.5 per.
Redden's 31, had six goals and 32 assists for Ottawa last season, a two time All-Star, veraged 22:12 a game. At 6-2- 209, he's got some bite. And lest we forget, he was the Islanders' first round pick in 1995.
After 11 years in Ottawa, maybe Redden, who had 410 points in 838 games, will thrive in a new locale. We'll see...

6yrs 6.5 per, awful job, wheres the bruiser? wheres the wingers? not good at all

Now if we dump garbage Backman, we got 6th and 7th spots available. Sauer likely not ready till December, Baranka left to Russia, so looks like only Sanguinetti and Potter available. I hope they use those spots to develop them instead of wasting them on another UFA or Backman.

Jimmyc-

Backman is going to the minors. Thats 2.3 million off the books. We will be so much better on the PP now. Hahullah!!

6 years?!? WTF? not very happy about this one.

I have a feeling that Backman will either be traded or sent to the minors (meaning his 2.3m salary comes off the books). I also think Orpik will be signed.

I can see a D-line of:

Redden - Roszival
Orpik - Staal
Girardi - Tyutin

Redden is 31 years old. I'd rather have him to 37, thank 37-43. Atleast he still has a lot of gas in the tank.

hey Steve, what's the cap space looking like?

I think with the $$ we just handed to Rosi and Redden there is no way we are bringing back anyone. No Shanny, no Avery and No Jagr.

I want Orpik now and Cheechoo before training camp!! I thought we would get Hainsey but I am very satisfied with Redden. I just hope this doesn't take too much out of our cap room to get Orpik. The D corp that Lynxs put up aint too bad in my eyes.

I am so excited about this year's team like never before imagine garbage like Jagr, Shanahan, Straka, Betts, Hollweg, Malik, Mara, Strudwick and Backman gone and instead having bigger, meaner, more physical players like Voros, Rissmiller, Jamtin, Redden, Byers, Moore, Korpikoski creating havok on top of Dubinsky, Callahan, Dawes, Girardi, Tyutin, Staal, etc. I just hope we don't sign ANYBODY else except for our RFAs.

Disgusting, Steve.

A horrible signing, and a reason to save $4,000 by not renewing my ticket plan.

You know its a bad signing if Bob is ecstatic.

The thing I like about Redden is he never won a Cup so he should be very hungry for it. Who should be the captain Redden or Drury?

Rucchin why don't you watch the Devils then next season.

I can't see both Redden and rosi .way to much money for the back line. I hope there is a trade being made that includes rosi.

Mark Streit to the Iceholes:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/signings_2008/

First i like to start off saying that Bob you are not very intelligent, the team you said would not win one game. A 30-40 point defensman who does not play phisical does not deserve 6.5 million. They were better off spending the extra 600,000 to get Campbell who is younger and a better powerplay quarterback. They will re-sign Jagr and get Orpik and thats it. Im also very curious about what trade they are making because there has to be some reason to signing these nobodys, vorros, rissmiller, and Jamtin. Steve can you give so insight.

Streit > Redden. And cheaper too! Hi-ooooooooo.

Valiquette re-signed.

I think we are looking at around 11 mil left. Give or take

Isn't Redden a coke head or a recovering one? why come to manhattan???

By my count if we dump Backman's salary we only got around 8 million cap space (that is with Dawes and Sjostrom re-signed)

What a complete joke.

Campbell 60+ points in 82 gms 7Mil.

Redden 30 somthing points in 82 games 6.5M

Sather did as good negotiating this contract as he did with Tyutin!

Brilliant Sather you frickin Genius! What a complete joke.

Campbell sucks defensively, Redden is a shutdown defenseman that scores too and got more experience and leadership, is bigger and more physical. Senators chose Redden over Chara few years ago.

QUOTE
Wade Redden - Well I save the worst for last. Sad but true, Redden actually lowered his level of play in all four games from that of the regular season. He refused to play the body and constantly lost battles for loose pucks or was too slow to keep up with the Pens forwards. Just a horrible display of hockey. Too bad he had to end his career this way in Ottawa but his passionless cost this team dearly all year.

wow, gotta say I agree with bob on Redden.

Of course 6.5 mil is crazy money, but that's what the market bears.

I can definitely see Redden and Staal paired for the next 6 years.

Marc Staal will definitely be the biggest benefactor of Wade Redden signing here.

Redden should be teamed up with a young Defenseman. First Staal or Potter or Sanguinetti if he makes the team, later with Del Zotto.

agreed again Bob, holy crapola

Of course Redden played injured most of last season, so he was unable to play the body a good portion of time. He didn't lose a step or any talent, he played hurt, big difference. He is also a very strong leader for the young studs on D, he will help mature Staal, Sanguinetti, etal as the ycome along. Rissmiller and Voros are worker bees who are obviously being brought in to upgrade the role players and see to it that every night the Rangers put forth the effort to outwork their opponents as opposed to taking periods off regularly. Everyone on this team was guilty of that last season. Sometimes it takes a solid blue collar approach for a team to jell. Seems that the mgmt feels that some of the young Hartford players may be ready to make a run at the big club. If that is the case it is best to make the transition to Gomer and Drury and make this a team that skate, work hard and bring the lunch pail every night. Nothing wrong with that philosophy.

Rissmiller can play center and was over 50% on faceoffs. I really hope this is the end of Blair "2.5 assists" Betts

Great signing well done glad to have both redden and roszival to back in the fold. Take him over campbell anyday more complete package stronger defensively.

Where's the beef behind the blue line? Where's the scoring punch up front? One of redden/Roszival would have been tough to take, but both?

Sather is still a moron!!

Bill,

You took Cambell's best year and Reddens worst year for your comparison while not taking into account defensive play and leadership and +/- etc. I'll take Redden at $6.5 over Cambell at $7.1 any day.

Ouch,

Your quote comes from Hockeybuzz..enough said.

With ten or eleven million left in cap room and trades still an option...I can honestly say I am happy and excited about where the team could be heading.

Just watched the videos of all the goals Rissmiller and Voros scored and am really impressed. Voros gets really excited when he scores. And they both wear #34.

Scoring will be there when we roll 4 lines that can skate and score and a Jagrless PP.

We are very strong at Center with Dubinsky, Anisimov and Gomez, Rissmiller and possibly Drury who is better off as a goalscoring winger and a center on the PK. We got Prucha, Dawes, and Callahan who can all score if given a playmaking center. We got an improved defense and strong goaltending. Screw Jagr he does more harm than good.

lenny,

didn't you say you want the Rangers to lose so they would get a top draft pick?

if Redden and Roszival are as bad as you seem to think, I'd think you'd be happy?

Dude, why waste the money? Could use it to sign that first round pick next year plus all the early picks the Rangers could accumulate.

Would get the cup a lot faster that way, as you know!

This is a very dissappointing signing for the Rangers, to be completely honest. This is another over-priced signing, and if they are looking to bring back the RFA's, they will be pushing closer and closer to the cap. $6.5 Million for 6 years, that is basically saying that Redden is just as important to this team as Lundqvist. I really beg to differ on so many levels. Redden has steadily been declining, and he is very soft in his own end, hence the reason he is no longer wanted in Ottawa. It wasn't that they couldn't resign him, they made a point to let him go. What's even more sad is that the Iceholes on the Island just signed a better contract with Streit than we did with Redden. They actually got more, for less money, while we added a hefty contract when we should have been looking for better buys. On top of all of that, we resigned Roszival for another $5 million per season. Who is our shut-down defenseman? Who is going to clear the pucks in front of the net? It's great having money, but we need to spend it more wisely...

I still don't understand how we didn't give Craig Weller a chance. He is a perfect 4th liner a monster that has size, skating, hitting, fighting, defensive and offensive ability. Unbelievable, he is so much more usefull than Orr and Hollweg put together.

Joke.

Re: Campbell and Redden: Campbell has been a late bloomer and is finding his game now. Redden is on the downside of his career.

Statistically though, both players were comparable with the +/-. but one player scored 60 in 80 and our other player scored 38 or somthing in 80. Who would we want?

These guys are being signed and paid on their stats and although I think Redden is solid he shoulda received 5Mil for 3-4 not 6.5 for 6. Term were way outta line.

I woulda rather have Ssther just said we missed the boat than overpay Redden.

In addition we still need a physical D man, and we coulda picked up Commodore who bangs every night, but here we already spent our wad or at least a nice chunk of it..

I see Sanguinetti being traded for a top 6 forward with size who is young and not too costly. between our number one pick and now Redden that's the only way this makes any sense.

i have the rangers at 7 million under the cap. with redden, rosival, valiquette, dawes and those other 2 grinders you signed today. the reason you are 7 million under the cap is you have to include the great brendan shanahans 2.5 million dollar bonus last year that counts for this years cap. so while everyone says you have 10-11 million in cap space left as the schmoozer would say its more like 7 or 8 sorry strangers.

Redden will be eaten alive by the Garden faithful. He is soft, soft, soft. Expect the boo birds to be out by December.

Here he is destroyed by tough-guy Ryan Whitney

http://youtube.com/watch?v=4FiORhT09AI

LOL nice to see him punch Crosby in the face 3 or 4 times and avoid Crosby's punches.

Wow, just a horrible move signing Redden. Why so many years and why so much per year? This came out of nowhere. Maybe Jim Dolan got bored destroying the Knicks and decided to contribute some of his incompetence to the Rangers. Redden is probably making that "I can't believe you gave me all this money, I just don't deserve it" look that Allan Houston made when signing a max contract way back when.

Why is anyone discussing the fourth line? Unless it's filled with someone that can actually pot 10-15 goals, who cares? It doesn't make or break any team.

WHERES AVERY GONNA GO???

MAC,

"this came out of nowhere"

how?

Even Stevie Wonder could see the Rangers were in the market for a PP point man.

If anyone who knows what they are talking about didn't think the Rangers were going to go after Wade Redden after losing the Brian Campbell sweepstakes they are clueless.

I really can't believe the majority of so called Ranger fans on here.

To even compare Cambell to Redden is laughable. Two completely different players. Redden is a solid all around two way d-man while Cambell is completely a one sided offensive d-man who's offensive stats are not that much better. Look at Reddens career +/- its like a +128 or something. He is a battler and a former captain. He has played on Team Canada as a leader. As far as the contract, its the same as Drury and Gomez. The market set their price not Sather. And everybody saying we could have signed this or that guy or we could have offered the same to this guy or that guy who signed elsewhere. How do you know Sather didn't make those same offers and was turned down? How do you know we didn't try for Rolston or Streit or any other guy who went elsewhere? You do realize there are other teams who these guys can opt to play for right?

For the person who said that the Isles got more for less by signing Streit...you obviously don't know anything about Streit. Streit is a fill in 4th line winger who happens to man the PP point very well. He is like a weird opposite of Strudwick. So again there is absolutely no comparison to Redden who is a career #1 defenseman. And for the person who posted the Youtube clip of Redden supposedly getting beat up by Whitney. The clip clearly shows Redden playing solid d in front of his net and then defending himself against an attack from behind by Whitney. And guess what? Redden ISN"T A FIGHTER. That's not why we got him...but as I say that, watch this....

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qyda4SF57Bg&feature=related

not too bad for a non-fighter really. Redden had an off year which I believe was mostly related to a personal issue as well as the entire Ottawa team collapsing. I am happy and any other knowledgeable Ranger fan would be happy as well. Anyone who would rather have Streit or Commodore over Redden because you want to save two million a year is clueless. IMHO. Should be an interesting day as hopefully some other big names make some choices today.

dead on joke, couldnt said it better

Steve,

Help! Where's the silver lining here? These deals make me ill!

Bad signing. Plays on the white stuff- the soft ice at MSG will slow him down even more. Prepare to boo, and know that he doesn't fulfill his contract, and ends up in the wrong section of the newspaper...book it.

First off, as a Ranger fan, anybody with the name "ottawa cop" would be the last person who's opinion I would listen to. Second, Redden is a stud, the only two people who clearly know what there talking about on this forum are joke and bob. The guy is a complete ALL AROUND d-man, and has shades of leetchy.

Redden cares more about railing coke than he does playing. Ranger fans are going to find out for the next 6 years what the sens found out the past 2. Wade is not worth 6.5 mil. And in closing, if Redden is trying to kick his problem, a party town like NYC isn't a wise choice. But, I suppose nobody else was gonna give the high pay-out.
