Thirty-six-year old Czech center Petr Nedved, who played 478 games with the Rangers in three stints between 1992-93 and 2003-04, is coming to training camp to try to land a job.
"He has spoken with Tom and Glen and passed up some other offers in Europe, wanting to come to camp with the opportunity to earn a job here," a Rangers spokesman confirmed a few moments ago. "There is no commitment on our end."
The desire of Nedved, who scored 149 goals and added 202 assists as a Ranger, to give it another shot in New York first came to light this morning in a partial translation of a Czech news report provided by blueshirtbulletin.com. In that translation, Nedved said he hoped for the chance to play "a few minutes on the third or fourth line."
Nedved, a pal of Jaromir Jagr, was acquired in 1994 from St. Louis for Esa Tikkanen and Doug Lidster. He was traded to Pittsburgh in August 1995 with Sergei Zubov (yikes) for Ulf Samuelsson and Luc Robataille.
He was re-acquired from the Pens with Chris Tamer and Sean Pronger in November '98 for Alex Kovalev and Harry York, and was shipped to the Oilers in March 2004 with Jussi Markkanen for G Steve Valiquette, Dwight Helminen and a 2004 2nd-round pick that turned into Dane Byers.
Nedved scored 20 goals in 42 games with HC Sparta Praha in the Czech ExtraLiga last season...the more the merrier in September, I guess...

ummmmm,
wow?
WTF? Why us? Why not Pittsburg or some other team? He has no chance here.
You have to be kidding. What's next. Jan Hlvac? Is this none contact hockey again?
Nedved will be 37 in December and he won the Cup already. Is he that desperate for money?
Nedved never won the Cup
OMG! WTF? Is the sky falling... no, that's our chances at a good season.
His wife must have a modeling contract in NY. I doubt this guy will make the team.
Ok guys relax, he looks to be competeing for a job, he wasn't signed. He's just looking to play in the NHL again, 20 goals in 42 isn't too terrible to be honest.
You know some of the rookies trying to make the team are really gonna light him up when it comes to the scrimmages lol
tell him forget it, don't waste anyone's time!
only 5 assists in 42 games? no thanks.
Are you kidding? Someone else posted the idea of Nedved coming back as a joke on another board a few months back. My immediate thought was - no f-in way that would happen. - My reply: WOW WTF!
Where as im shocked as all of you im trying ot look at it as a motivational viewpoint.
with Nedved trying out for the team it pushes the younger guys harder to try and prove themselves which is always good.
a little healthy competition and pressure shows who really will rise to the occation when the heat is on
what do you all think?
Did Sather get some funny cigars or something? I can't believe this.
suit up brett, if you can skate and hold your own, sounds like Sather is lookin at you, between trying to get Sundin and allowing Nedved to tryout
To continue the discussion about possible Movements, well to move Roszival, is a great option to a team who needs to hit the floor in order to obide by the laws of the Salary Cap, LA and Atlanta need to hit the cap, and LA doesn't have a single Veteran D-Man to speak of except for....Tom Pressing, yep a good influence on the yonugsters. and Atlanta too, bad D core, so yep its possible.
If anyone is going to be signed by the New York Rangers, its me. I have heard Glen has a thing for signing over the hill players, but how about dead ones...
Nedved is a waste. Allowing him to camp is just a mockery to the young players who've been working hard to make the team.
The 2pm live chat is going on, but obviously, my comments and questions are good, or PC enough for Zippy to approve. The live chat should read: "for zippy's supporters only".
Thanks.

Rangers9 ...
I said that last week about Rozsival. I think a package of Prucha/Betts and Rozsival to LA for Patrick O'sullivan and Denis Gauthier.
That gives us a big, Beukeboom type D-man and a high scoring prospect, and it gives LA a puck-moving d-man and a high-scoring prospect (prucha) or solid d player (betts). Plus it helps them reach the floor !!
The best part of this is seeing the bleating in alarm and consternation from the usual suspects.
Armageddon! Ragnarok! The sky is falling, the sky is falling!!
If Nedved makes the team then great. He would come cheap, and he would have had to have SIGNIFICANTLY outplayed someone else (who more likely than not could be stashed in HFD for a no-waivers call up)
Very similiar to the Dave Scatchard tryout in my opinion. Motivates the guys like Callahan, Dawes, Dubinsky, etc. to stay focused in camp and remind them that they still have two-way contracts. Very slim chance Nedved makes the team, if anything they'd re-sign Shanahan if a guy like this was on the radar. For Nedved if he does well enough it opens other teams eyes up and maybe he gets picked up.
nedved what about shanny remember him we could use locker room leadership than nedved besides shanny has had better numbers as of late
