Wet Sunday But Fish Should Still Bite

Passing rain showers and possible thunderstorms are in the forecast for today, but between the rain drops there should still be some good fishing. The fluke bite is still very strong at Fire Island, Moriches and Shinnecock Inlets. Most of the better scores are coming from inside the bays and inlet waters, but some bigger fish are being picked in the ocean in 35 to 40 feet of water. Local spearing seems to have the edge over imported at this point.

Montuak, Orient and Mattituck are also offering some pretty solid fluke catches. The Montauk fleet is getting the lion's share of the keepers with a lot of 4-pounders and fair number of 5- to 7-pound fluke mixing into the catch. At Orient, Gardiners Island is the hot spot - you'll find some big porgies and nice black sea bass there, too. Mattituck boaters should sail west of the Northville platform and probe in 30 to 40 feet of water. Bring along some diamond jigs and poppers because there have been roaving schools of bluefish to 8 pounds in the area.

Check back later for more reports.
