Are You All In ?

Maybe they don't get the love or respect of other sports teams in this city, but to me, the Indiana Fever womens basketball team is by far one of the more compelling stories working. It is just unfortunate that the attention this team and story lives in obscurity, and for those that haven't checked the season out, history is passing before your eyes.

act_ebony_hoffman.jpg act_katie_douglas.jpg act_tamika_catchings.jpg act_tammy_sutton-brown.jpg act_tully_bevilaqua.jpgHistory, boy go figure that ten years ago when this team was introduced into the WNBA, nobody thought they would last 5 years, much less 10. As the Fever roll towards the end of their 10th year, they are poised to make history. They are poised to win a WNBA championship with some of the best women assembled on a basketball team. And they will do so with no prima donnas or over hyped players. They will do so with a team that is balanced with players like Ebony, Katie, Tamika, Tammy, and Tully, plus a coach in Linn Dunn and bench who play their roles when asked to do.

This club may be playing under the cloud of uncertainity as to whether they'll be around next year or not. If they actually are, they're playing as if they had better win it all now for there may be no tomorrow.

I've attended almost 9 games this year, and each one I can tell you has been filled with everything you hoped a basketall game would have. It is still as shame the team is viewed with laughter and mocked constantly for a playing a sport that draws rave reviews when men play it, but laughter when the women suit up. Too bad, because I have a good feeling that in a couple of weeks the city of Indianapolis will be hosting a party for a new champion of basketball. A champion that has withstood contstant ridicule and scorn while giving it their all night in and night out. Too bad history will pass right those folks by. But for the faithful, hang on and enjoy the ride. I gotta believe it will be worth it.

Bill, you are so on with this mention. The Fever are facing daunting odds of finding favor with this city, but truth be told, all WNBA clubs are finding it hard to succeed because of male and fan stupidity. While we women want to be adored, it ends up being in a negative view from the guys who see us as nothing more than sexual eye candy. So when a woman does something that isnt smut driven, half of society mocks us, and the other half laughs at us hoping to discourage and send us packing.
It is too bad womens' basketball is viewed as a joke, as most of the women I have ever known from high schcool or college who played took the game seriously when they played. Heck, even one or two could have given alot of guys a run for the money if given the chance.
Keep up the good work in writing about the women and the Fever in general. It is refreshing to see someone like you take a stand for something good. Too bad your sports department can't follow your lead and give a bit more time to them as well.
