Meet Joe Fernandez

Joe Fernandez started working for Newsday in 2003 as a part-timer for the high school sports department. He was hired full-time for Newsday.com in 2006. Joe has been a fan of mixed martial arts ever since Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Royce Gracie won his first UFC match in 1993. Inspired by Gracie's use of technique against size and strength, Fernandez began training Brazilian jiu-jitsu to benefit from its conditioning and self-defense tactics. He now trains under Milton Regis, Greg Runfola, Denys Darzi and Grand Master Francisco Mansor at Kioto Brazilian jiu-jitsu on Long Island.
