This Sunday’s WWE pay per view features matches between the Undertaker and Edge, Randy Orton and Triple H, and John Cena and JBL.
Wait a minute, didn’t I already write this post two weeks ago?
"One Night Stand" feels more like a stale relationship with no end in sight. I’ve made this point many times, but WWE definitely needs to freshen up its top feuds. Hopefully, we’ll be getting just the shake up we need with the upcoming draft lottery. But there’s actually yet another pay per view before then, June’s Night of Champions. So it may be possible that we see some of these combinations on pay per view yet again in just a few weeks.
My hope for Vince McMahon’s big announcement last Monday was that it would involve a reduced price for One Night Stand, the third WWE pay per view in five weeks. One Night Stand was originally designed as an ECW revival pay per view, and received wide praise in its first two years. But it has long since lost its relevancy and needs to be removed from the pay per calendar, just as WWE wisely did with January’s New Year’s Revolution. Asking fans to spend $160 on pay per views eight weeks is insane.
That said, I’ll give WWE credit for making ONS feel unique by featuring all extreme-rules matches. Unlike TNA, WWE is fairly disciplined in how often it features quirky stipulation matches, so a card loaded with Stretcher, I Quit, Falls Count Anywhere and Last Man Standing matches is something to look forward to.
I’m especially intrigued by the tables, ladders and chairs match between Taker and Edge. We know how great the Rated R Superstar can be in this kind of match, and Taker always gives it his all and tries to innovate in the ring. And we're pretty much guaranteed a new world champion.
I’ll probably check it out.

I'm pretty interested about the TLC match too, expecting Edge to bump like crazy and Taker to find a few new things to do with a ladder and the human body.
Also interested in the I Quit match, just because it's pretty unusual for WWE. I do suspect that it may be a let down though and they'll just go for a submission victory, rather then trying to do something brutul.
Really don't care about Orton/HHH and Cena/JBL though. I know that between Wrestlemania and Summerslam everything is kept in a holding pattern, but I don't remember it ever being as extreme (pardon the pun) as this.
Wouldn't be surprised if this was the last One Night Stand. The first two were cool when it actually meant something, but in this tri-branded PPV era it's just another show that they have to make matches for.
Replace ONS with King of the Ring??? :)
I don't think you'll see Cena-JBL III (OK, really at least IV) at Night of Champions because neither has a championship.
lets face it. edge sucks. christian carried e & c during those classic tlc matches of yesteryear.
fire edge and bring christian cage back
"Asking fans to spend $160 on pay per views from May to June is insane."
JD: $40 + ONS: $40 + NoC: $40 = $160?????
I thought Backlash was in early May, but it was actually late April. I've corrected it.
Yes bring back KOTR to PPV, make it mean something again. Yes Edge does suck and as far as the TLC whom shall get injured and be out for 3-6 months Taker or Edge? ( my money is on Edge) not hating, just saying.
While this weekend's ppv has me intrigued, since its all gimmick matches, all the gimmicks are your "standard" gimmick matches, nothing special. no HitC, hell, not even a cage match. "Falls count anywhere"? Feel the excitement. The "stretcher match" has potential, but not due to the gimmick, but rather the wrestlers involved. The "I Quit" match is a first for the females, so that's something new and interesting (and THANK GODS it doesn't include McCool and Maryse, who cant even stand without falling). Say what you will about the ridiculousness of some of TNA's gimmick matches, but at least they try to come up with something new, something WWE hasnt done since HitC (and no, making the cell taller does not count, nor do lingere matches or pillow fights). As a result, I think we'll be saving our $40 (or is it more expensive now? We get it in HD) for a TNA ppv and a re-order of the RoH PPV (time warner cable's "upgraded"(downgraded) dvr screwed up and ordered the show for us, but didnt record it, so when we went to watch it, we had missed most of the show.)
Edge vs Undertaker (TLC Match for World Heavyweight Championship) Undertaker
WWE Champion Triple H vs. Randy Orton (Last Man Standing Match) Triple H
John Cena vs. JBL (First Blood Match) John Cena
Shawn Michaels vs. Batista (Stretcher Match) Batista
Jeff Hardy vs. Umaga (Falls Count Anywhere) Jeff Hardy
Big Show vs. John Morrison vs. Tommy Dreamer vs. Chavo Guerrero vs. CM Punk (Singapore Cane Match) Big Show
Melina vs. Beth Phoenix ("I Quit" Match) Beth Phoenix
I think it looks decent enough. Yes the matches are similar but the company makes money by having more shows. It's the consumers' choice whether to order or not, so if you don't like it, don't order. Running with the same feuds is neccesary because of the amount of shows though.
Batista/HBK has a brilliant story, and will be good. Any Cena match is good these days, LMS was quality the first time around, and I'm thinking HHH could lose and head to Smackdown, because really he has done it all on Raw. If Regal was due for a heel run it could be turned back to Orton. TLC will be good, even though Taker's stipulation basically ensures he wins. An innovative Diva match, falls count anywhere possibly having some crazy Hardy stunts, and a match featuring John Morrison, so it's all good.
If people don't like that the matches are all similar, then seriously, just don't watch. No one is forcing you to, and I'm sure many won't be. Wait until after the draft for some fresh feuds and order then. It's the companies' job to put on a product you like, and then you have the power to decide whether or not to order it. Not you order anyway, and then moan when you knew exactly what you were getting.
I believe the draft comes before Night of Champions
