Sports Illustrated faces some challenges in 21st century

ec_2.jpgWhat's wrong with Sports Illustrated? Plenty.

Josh Levin didn't cover the topic quite that succinctly in this piece for Slate, but he did so far more insightfully.

The piece is made more devastating by how sober and thorough it is. He even offers constructive suggestions.

Only once does he resort to a naughty word synonymous with "tush'' that rhymes with "sass'' in describing the frequent kicking done to SI by ESPN.

At ESPN's current rate of hiring editors and reporters from other media outlets, soon I will be the only veteran sports journalist in America without an ID card to get me past the ornery security guards in Bristol.

Yep.
The reality is not Sports Illustrated, the glossy magazine.
The reality is si.com ... to break news [A-Rod, anyone] to analyze news, to write about trends, truth and tragedy, all online.
All the Time Inc. publications are going through the same upheaval, from the venerable Time Magazine all the way down.
The paper magazine is becoming irrelevant in this game just as, I hate to say it, the hold-in-your-hand newspaper, 7 television stations on your dial, and your old portable radio.
Of course there's time and needs for paper. You don't really want to bring your computer or PDA into the "reading room". Electronics don't like water.

What year is that SI Magazine picture you have posted?

It's the first ever swimsuit edition. I think 1964.
