Baseball writers' dinner is a New York winter classic
The annual baseball writers' dinner, a venerable New York sports tradition, is scheduled for 6 p.m. Jan. 27 at the New York Hilton.
I went to one in the early 1990s, or maybe it was the late '80s. I recall being amazed by the magnitude of it. I assume it's even bigger now.
The event is open the public, with tickets priced at $225, or less than it will cost to sit in the high-rent district at Yankee Stadium this season.
Newsday's own Dave Lennon will be presenting Billy Wagner the Good Guy Award, given to the New York player who is most cooperative with the media.
Omar Minaya is scheduled to be there. And Willie Randolph.
And . . . Yogi Berra, Rich Gossage and Dick Williams.
Plus award winners Alex Rodriguez, Jimmy Rollins, C.C. Sabathia, Jake Peavy, Dustin Pedroia, Ryan Braun, Eric Wedge and Bob Melvin.
