Hank Steinbrenner believes America is Yankees Nation

According to the Sports Business Daily, an article on the Steinbrenner family that is to appear in this weekend's New York Times "Play" magazine will include the following quote from reigning SportsWatch New York Sports Media Person of the Year Hank Steinbrenner:

"'Red Sox Nation?' What a bunch of ---- that is. That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans. Go anywhere in America and you won’t see Red Sox hats and jackets, you’ll see Yankee hats and jackets. This is a Yankee country."

Yikes! (Actually, there are quite a few Red Sox fans at the campus in Bristol.)

UPDATE: Here's a statement from ESPN: "Fans of all teams work at ESPN - Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, Braves, Dodgers, etc. Our ratings have consistently shown that both the Yankees and Red Sox enjoy national followings."

Yes, there are Yankees fans all around the country (a lot of transplated New Yorkers), but Hank is crazy if he thinks there a more Yankees fans than haters out there.

Yankee fans employed by ESPN:
Brian Kenny
Buster Olney
Rich Eisen (formerly, of course)
Steve Levy
Orestes Destrade
Mike Greenberg
Stephen A. Smith
Freddie Coleman
Max Kellerman
Michael Kay
Charlie Steiner (formerly)
Tony Kornheiser
Jeremy Schaap
Trey Wingo (He told me so.)
Matt Lauer (Formerly.)

Leave Peter Gammons and his personal ties to Theo Epstein alone!

Hank, why did you stop at America. What about those t-shirts that say Yankee Universe?

I think Barry Melrose is a closet Diamondbacks fan.

How come there are no Confederate fans?

ESPN/Red Sox connections include of course George Mitchell, then lesser lights such as Jed Drake/

Mike Greenburg is a Mets fan. In 2006 when the Yankees started out 11-19 he said he was "laughing himself silly that Steinbrenner had run a once-proud franchise into the ground".
From what I remember in a "sports Business Journal" article last year the Yankees account for 25% of the merchandise sold by mlb.
No one else was in double figures. Perhaps the Red Sox have improved but I seriously doubt they have overtaken the Yankees.

BS he's a Mets fan. He grew up watching the Yankees in NYC, according to himself, and he also roots for the Cubbies (refers to them as "my Cubbies") since he went to Northwestern and started his career reporting in Chicago. He even said his younger son isa Yankees fan and he takes him to games. No Mets fan would ever do that.

Hank has confused Red Sox fans with Yankee haters. It is a fact that there are many Yankee haters working on ESPN, who aren't necesarilly Red Sox Fans. Obviously Gammons and Raveich are big Red Sox fans and didn't Erin Andrews or some female slideline reporter wear a Sox jersey during the game?!?!

And don't tell me when Miller and Morgan announce Yankee games, they're rooting for the Yanks. Miller hates the Yankees because of his Giants roots, and Morgan roots against the Yanks because he feels it takes away from the glory of the Big Red Machine.

By the way, Greenberg is a Yankee fan.
