A laurel and hearty handshake to Mike (Doc) Emrick upon the news he will receive the Hockey Hall of Fame's 2008 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for contributions to the sport as a broadcaster.
Much deserved.
I told Emrick recently that one of these days I'm going to keep track of how many different verbs he uses in the course of calling a game.
I think it would be interesting and amusing. But so far I've been too lazy.
Maybe some hockey blogger out there can steal my idea and take it off my hands. Thanks in advance.

Foster Hewitt---"He shoots, HE SCORES!!!"
THE Voice of Canadian hockey
LOL, but you already put "Foster Hewitt" in the article.
Whoops....
Read the article before looking at pictures, 505, slow down big fella.
We sure are lucky to have had him all these years doing the Devils...my favorite Emerickism is when a shot is high and off target he will say, "Got the glass."
But I've read in other blogs some people claiming he has a terrible voice, pining for the days of Gary Thorne (who while he has a great set of pipes doesn't know the game anywhere near as well as Emerick) or the clown they imported from comcast Washington to do the versus games Emerick can't or doesn't want to do...also a good broadcaster is Dave Strada...
Sam Rosen is very good too but he has to get rid of that infantile, "It's a power play goal," which it seems (I could be wrong but I think) he only yells on a Ranger power play goa.
Jeff,
""It's a power play goal," which it seems (I could be wrong but I think) he only yells on a Ranger power play goal."
Everytime I hear Rosen yell out "It's a POWER play goal!!!" I get a visual of Carol Kane clocking Bill Murray in Scrooged.
"It's a TOASTER, Frank!"
Best hockey play by play guys out there right now besides Emrick?
1st -Paul Steigerwald--Pittsburgh Penguins.
2nd-Rick Jeanneret- Buffalo Sabres(based on strictly the ENTERTAINMENT value)
IMHO
Jeff:
I think the clown to whom you refer from Washington who does the games on Versus is Joe Beninati.
I have to agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of him...a clown. He tries way too hard to be Mike Emrick and fails miserably. A goal is not a goal, it's a marker. A goalie is not a goalie or a goaltender, it's a netminder or goalkeeper. He continually misses parts of the action and fails to identify things happening after the whistle blows.
For example, a big pet peeve of mine that he always does is mention that a penalty is called and will tell us about it after the break, and they come back with no information on the penalty, just the graphic in the scorebox saying which team is shorthanded. Blame the producers for not replaying the infraction, but the least that could be done is mention who got the time for what.
Add Bob Cole (even at his advanced age) from CBC and Bob Miller from LA. Pat Foley will be back as Blackhawks announcer next season and he was good.
Worst: Dave Mishkin--Tampa by far. Jack Edwards--Bruins.
Inexcusable to get this far without a Jim Hughson nomination.
As for the Emricks, Beninatis, and Darryl Reaughs of the world, I can do without their choices of verbiage. I'm as big a critic of cliches as you'll find, but they just seem to be different for the sake of it and it sounds silly.
And I don't think saying "Crosby takes a hit as he passes" is a cliche. So there's no need to replace it with "Crosby is canceled by Lebda."
Emrick is one of the great wordsmiths in broadcast journalism history. Good for him.
Paul Steigerwald and Bob Miller are only to Emrick's equal. Not very family with the announcers for Canadian teams.
And whoever thinks Gary Thorne was a great hockey announcer must also think Dave O'Brien was great calling the World Cup. What a show-horse he was.
I just got done with 3 days of Gary Thorne doing the O's/Yanks on MLB Extra Innings...until this week I liked him a lot.
Thank God Jim Palmer was able to keep him in some kind of check.
Every 4 innings over a 3 day period it was a soliloquoy of how the Yanks were mishandling Joba....
In effect, eventually Thorne became one.
And I don't remember him ever doing hockey anyway.....
Now Dan Kelly.........that's another story.
the list should begin and end with Jim Hughson and Chris Cuthbert
Paul Steigerwald is awful, that he's in the same category as Doc is ridiculous.
Chris Cuthbert, Jim Hughson, Dave Strader and Ralph Strangis are those in that category.

"Paul Steigerwald is awful, that he's in the same category as Doc is ridiculous"
HEY....it's just my opinion...I enjoy his call of a game.
Not that familiar enough with the Hughsons and the Cuthberts (well, Elisha) of the hockey world to comment. I'm a Yank, ya know.
But when Center Ice comes back next year I'll be sure to give them some attention.
I'm a Pens fan and agree Steigy is awful. He and Errey miss too much. Bring back Mike Lange!
Mike Emrick is clearly the best in the business. He doesn't just tell you what happens, he chooses words that allow the viewer to understand what's happening, and to feel the environment inside the arena. Plus - and this is rare for a broadcaster - he knows when to talk and when to keep quiet. Unlike some others (Thorne) who like to yap through the entire Stanley Cup celebration, Doc just lets you look, listen, and enjoy the moment.
Mike Emrick even got me addicted to 2004 Womens Olympic Water Polo. I was going through hockey withdrawal that summer (the upcoming lockout wouldn't help), and his call made it seem as exciting as a Stanley Cup finals game. As Richard Sandomir of the NY Times wrote four years ago, its as if he's calling a hockey game, only the ice melted.
''A shot -- oh! -- and getting a piece of it is Andreo!''
Congrats to Doc, a man I've known for years and worked with on several occasions. Well deserved and long overdue-- but what nice timing, with hockey reaching perhaps its highest spot on the US stage in years!
BTW, Doc has his own blog:
http://mikeemrick.com/hp_wordpress/
He doesn't update it as often as Neil, but he has a great tribute to Ernie Harwell on his home page right now!
Wow, I am getting smoked for bringing up Steigerwald.
So be it.
LOVE IT!!!
People talking hockey agin...
Doc Emrick is good but he is no Jim Carr.
