Penguins win in Triple-OT, Sue Simmons holds tongue

tx_rangers.jpgYes, I stayed up (barely) until 12:49 a.m. to watch the Penguins stave off elimination and give the Stanley Cup Finals the long series it deserves.

I had no choice, really. I did it for my favorite sport. I did it for my job. And I did it to see whether Sue Simmons would be so ticked off about staying up two hours late she would drop another f-bomb on the Ch. 4 news.

No such luck. She was a pro. At least in the first few minutes before I turned it off and went to bed.

(Hey, Rangers fans, who is that guy in the picture?)

That would be your GWG scorer Petr Sykora.

Not Petr Sykora.

You are correct, sir! Or ma'am!

looks like I forgot to add my name info...

Neil, I'm shocked the game wasn't preempted by the late local news (except on the west coast) and moved to Versus.

Damn Sykora predicted in the 2nd OT he would score the game-winning goal. So, if the Pens go on to win the Cup, he becomes as legendary as Mark Messier? And what a scoop for Pierre McGuire, who said the guy was a waste?

I read that the game on the overnight ratings did a 3.8 during prime time and a 4.3 when you include the 3 OT's. These numbers usually drop when the final numbers come out.

Interesting the way the whole thing developed...ratings in NY area had to have been helped by the way Ollie Perez vaporized in the first inning...people probably switched over to watch the ceremony of giving the cup to the captain of the winning team (nothing likeit in sports)...instead they see Pittsburgh score with six attackers on the ice in the dying seconds...and probably with the Met game being totally uncompetitive stayed with it..

There is nothing in sports that can be nearly exciting as that and it's simply too bad the public can't recognize the uniqueness of the Stanley Cup playoffs...

But I wonder..if this were the 7th game and it had gone another overtime or two, would some idiots clamor for a shoot out to decide the issue so the whole national could stay up and see it?

Simply an outstanding game....
Nothing more, nothing less.

It doan matter who you are.....that was "sports" in one of it's finest moments.

I'd rank that game in the top 5 Finals games I've ever seen. Neil, you've been around the sport a long time -- how'd you rank it?

Kevin: I guess it's in my top 10 Finals games.

as many others, i love sue simmons; that's why she has been the lead female anchor at wnbc for 28+ years, and is still going strong.
