New York among top 10 markets for Series Game 2

Fox and MLB are going to need a six- or seven-game World Series to escape some really grim ratings numbers, it appears.

Game 2 was watched by 8.1 percent of American homes, which is the second-lowest for a Series game ever - behind only the 8.0 for Game 1 in 2006 - according to Sports Business Daily.

As usual, New York was more interested than most markets without a team involved. The leading major markets were topped by three from Florida plus Philadelphia, but after that came St. Louis, Charlotte, Boston, Minneapolis and New York, where 9.8 percent of homes tuned in on average.

While saying it was the second-lowest rating for a World Series game ever, don't you also have to consider how home viewership habits have changed in recent years? Many people are wired for hundreds of channels (a decade ago Bruce Springsteen was singing about "47 channels on" as it was the height of technology) plus there are other options as DVDs, game consoles, Hulu Tv, etc that were not available when Hall of Fame commissioner Bowie Kuhn began shifting games to prime time. The top rated TV show for the week ending October 18 was "CSI-Crime Scene Investigations" with an 11.8. This would be dismal compared to what "I Love Lucy", "Gunsmoke", "Charlie's Angels" and "Bill Cosby" drew in the era of three channels. The number 10 show for the week was "CSI-Miami" with an 8.7. So an 8.1 is not far from the top 10 plus you have the fact sports games have viewers in sports bars which are not reflected in Nielsen's. Sports also do well in the all-important 18-35 male demographic that is easily persuaded into spending 110% of his income (as opposed to us 50 year old males who only spend 105%).

Another thing you can draw from game 1 being lower than last year is despite carping about how often the Yankees and Red Sox are on TV, more people watch them than any other teams.

Jim: Everything you say is pretty much accurate. The World Series in recent years has outperformed the average prime time programming by 77 percent. On the other hand . . . the cost of World Series rights also must be factored in in evaluating the ratings power of the event.
