What exactly does the word spinoff entail? Is it a complete sale? Meaning Dolan will no longer be in power? That would be incredible.

Alas, I'm no expert on this type of thing, sir.
As an expert in many things media related, I yield the floor to the respected stock market analyst Craig Moffett, as quoted in The New York Times:
“Cablevision watchers [and we’d put ourselves in that category] have long pondered possible endgames, and the notion that the Dolans would retain ownership of MSG and the New York sports teams long after the rest of the assets had been divested has always been viewed as among the most likely outcomes.”

It's been long said that the Dolans will cash out the cable systems once the price is right to Time Warner, ceding cable domination of the New York metro area. And the family would retain control of the "fun" stuff ... meaning MSG, the theaters, the teams, and the sports-related cable networks. Don't worry, Chas. Dolan's great-great-grandchildren as yet unborn will still get their trust funds.
Don't know where Newsday fits in that picture, as it is a recent acquisition.
Back when I was parading up and down the aisles of MSG in the early 70's selling ice cream (the most popular item purchased by the throat parched munchers who attended the likes of Yes, Zeppelin, Chicago and many others), during the last half hour of inhabiting that aromatic smoke house, I would often look up and wonder how cool it would be if that colorful (orange and brown) ceiling in MSG WOULD spin (around or off, either way).
And now Neil is saying Cablevision IS gonna spin it..
Coo-elle..
