Is ESPN a threat to democracy and our way of life?

Oh, what the heck, let's wrap up the blogging week with Jason Whitlock's latest, in which he carpet bombs much of the sports media business - ESPN in particular - with a mishmash of good points, questionable points and everything in between.

The opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the positions of WatchDog, Newsday, Cablevision, any other media organization or anyone who might get mad at me for linking to it.

Entertaining read, though, as in . . .

"I'm occasionally hostile toward ESPN because it's an arrogant, reckless, destructive monopoly, and I still enjoy being a journalist from time to time. American journalists, last I checked, should be occasionally offended by arrogant, reckless, destructive monopolies. They're generally seen as threats to democracy and our way of life."

LOVE that guy....

And who can't appreciate this snippet....

"We leave the coverage of the most powerful institution in sports to basement bloggers..."

I just wish he would have tied in soccer to that whole "threat to democracy" angle.
If he had, I'd be volunteering to wash his car every Saturday.

all you media hacks(except vecsy)quake in your boots at that ego elf lupica, grow a spine will ya,whitlock is on the mark.

Wow, and wow. Certainly an interesting way to look at it. Agree about some of those height-challenged columnists, of which Best is not. As for ESPN, well, it's a free market. Companies were outbid. Economies of scale. With ESPN's accumulation of sports does come arrogance ... even their last two ombudspeople pointed that out. And some sports such as NHL hockey get short shrift in the MLB/NFL/NBA/NCAA world of Bristol.
I've worked with some people who have forever toiled for a certain regional sports network ... back to when they had almost all New York teams under their umbrella. Those folks unfortunately still give off that arrogance even though the advertising revenue that supported that way of business is gone. Sad.

Alcohol-free beer is a far greater threat to the American Way than
ESPN or the Dolans.

Either wreck needs to be spelled reck, or reckless needs to be spelled wreckless. You can't have it both ways.

Badly need your help. I really enjoyed it. You have done a great job. Help me! I find sites on the topic: Dish network program guide. I found only this - dish Networks remote control. Satellite tv guide is dish network better than directv? Satellite tv guide is dish network better than directv? :-( Thanks in advance. Mark from Paraguay.
