John Sterling's Yankees home runs calls are fun
Have a nice little debate going on my Facebook page after praising John Sterling's call of the A-Rod A-bomb Friday and asserting that for all of his well documented faults, no one is better at a dramatic, over-the-top home run call.
Your thoughts?

Agreed. But I really can't stand his "Teixeira sends a TEX message!" home run call, followed by "You're on the Mark, Teixeira!" Perhaps even worse is his "It's jolly ol' St. Nick!" call for a Nick Swisher home run.
Sterling is great he should be the YES play by play guy instead of Michael Kay. Lets be honest Kay is awful. Sterling would be perfect for tv.
For a franchise that is all about the pride and tradition of the Yankees, having a hack like Sterling in the booth is an embarrassment.
Its one thing if its pure elation and joy like Ron Santo in Chicago, but its not. Its all scripted and fake.
That crap is good for San Diego or Florida, not for the "greatest" baseball franchise.
I was stuck listening to a Yankees-Rockies game on the radio a couple of years ago and Sterling had a classic call..."It is high, it is far, it is gone! The Melk Man delivers!" or something to that effect...followed by an awkward pause...then something along the lines of "Oh, the ball was caught for a sac fly." When I saw a replay of the sac fly it wasn't even close to being a home run. But nothing is more important to Sterling--including the game itself--then breaking out one of his tired scripted catchphrases. It doesn't matter if the ball is a line drive and not that high, a fly ball down the line near Yankee Stadium's 314 foot sign and not that far, or if the ball is not actually gone. Why let the truth get in the way of a good story/play-by-play call?
both Sterling and Kay are unlistenable as announcers - the Yanks should be ashamed -

People who don't like John Sterling home run calls probably don't
like photos of Erin Andrews in "Watchdog". Keep them coming
John and Neil.
Sterling calls are fine when it's a close game, but some nights he should bury the pom-poms. on April 13, The Rays were up 10-0 and Swisher homered off Kazmir to make it 10-1, and Sterling went nuts. The Yankees were getting killed and he still cares about his HR slogans. I find it unprofessional.
Listening to Howie Rose call the Mets game on WFAN just reminded me of a great line of his during a Subway Series. When told by whoever his broadcast partner was that John Sterling has triplets, he said, "Yeah, and their names are High, Far, and Gone."
Pompous. That's all I can say.

Having been born and raised in The Bronx the Yankees have been a large part of my life. Over the years we have had some fantastic broadcasters. Mel Allen having been the best. When the Yankees hired John (mistakes) Sterling they lost the dignity they had with such a professional history. This guy is a self serving idiot.
All he cares about is inventing idiotic nicknames and juvenile home run calls. I for one cannot listen to him no matter how important the game is. He makes me sick and he had destroyed the dignity of baseballs greatest symbol.
I get a kick out of his HR calls, especially the walk offs.
He screws up, but that's entertaining in it's own way and brings
back memories of Phil Rizzuto's erroneous calls. He's an
unabashed homer, so I can see why some people wouldn't
like him, but as a Yankee fan, I actually prefer that.
If John Sterling thinks no one in baseball is faster than Carl Crawford, he hasn't seen Juan Pierre.
There's a very common baseball situation about which Sterling is ridiculously redundant: Is it really necessary to say "and an RBI" right after "It's a sac fly"? It's almost as stupid as Bob Brenly's "He'll take it" as if there's a choice!
