Keith Hernandez watches Mets game from leftfield
SNY got funky again Thursday, sending Keith Hernandez around Citi Field to watch the Phils-Mets tilt from various locations, including the restaurant in deep leftfield and next to the home dugout.
I understand why some purists don't like this sort of thing, but I thought it worked well and made me watch what was at the time an apparent blowout longer than I normally would have on a night when "30 Rock" and the imploding Yankees were on.
For example, .Hernandez made an interesting, I-never-would-have-thought-of-that point about how as a player he preferred dugouts closer to the plate than the one at Citi so he could better analyze the action.
There are 162 of these games, so what's wrong with mixing it up at times?

Also, minutes before the game Santana stood in front of the dugout showing Burkhardt various pitching grips.
It definitely added something to the broadcast. He didn't seem totally comfortable out by the restaurants in the outfield. Once he settled in, particularly by the dugout, I thought his commentary got much more interesting. I think they should continue this throughout the season, and maybe have Ron go out there as well.
I thought it was hysterical. and i think someone commented before - but what a great interview by burkhardt with Johan. That pithcing grip segment was awesome. Neil, is Kim not skilled enough to do what Burkhardt does? Why doesnt YES follow SNY's lead? I get so bored watching there telecasts.
Great telecast by SNY last night. I think they are the best in the business.
Im a Yankees fan...but couldnt watch the Yanks game anymore and switched to the SNY telecast. I was blown away - Mets fans should never complain. Your broadcast team is sick. Try wathcing a Yankees game on YES - you'll fall asleep. Not kidding...its that boring
They also did this last year with Keith and Ronnie each sitting behind home plate to watch from a different perspective. You could tell Keith was a bit uncomfortable with the crowds (Ronnie even made a point of mentioning his"love" of them) But him drinking the glass of wine waiting to come on and the stuff sitting next to the dugout was great
The SNY team is great...The one thing i love is my son and i watch a game together and he is totally into the broadcast and learns something from Ron and Keith everytime. I've seen the YES broadcast...and wow, they are boring and are cheerleaders for the team. Now i understand why the Yanks dislike their tv broadcast team
Loved the broadcast last night. Keith drinking a glass of wine was hysterical. Neil, is this the best broadcast out there? If its not, i dont know what is
Brian-
I agree...I think its the best broadcast of any sport out there. What a pleasure to watch whether you are a casual or die hard fan. SNY does a really nice job
Love how SNY produces the games with Kevin Burkhardt and moving the announcers around...great to watch especially after a long day's work
watching the SNY braodcast has become a routine for my family. They are funny, insightful and are the best booth i have ever heard.
To readers: I am leaving all of these pro-SNY comments up because I don't want to get into the censorship or hall monitor business, but in fairness to readers (and to YES) you should know I have reason to believe many of them came from the same email address despite the different names you see attached to them. So feel free to agree or disagree with the sentiments expressed, but understand that many of them seem to be coming from the same person.
I am a Mets fan, but will switch to Yankees telecasts as well. I think Gary, Keith and Ron are definitely the best tv team in NY. Not only are they more fun than the Yankees broadcasters, but they are not "homers" like the Yankees broadcasters. The other day, Joba Chamberlain was awful in the first inning, putting his team in a 4-0 hole right from the start. But if you tuned in late in the game, Michael Kay, Ken Singleton, and David Cone made it sound like Joba was worthy of the Cy Young award for losing. Gary, Keith and Ron call it like it is - if the Mets stink, they say so. I have enjoyed Mets games more and more with this team - the Yankees broadcasts have been horrible since they lost Phil Rizzuto, who wasn't the best broadcaster, but really gave the feeling that he was enjoying himself.
I agree with Mike. Last night, Kay and Cone were practically crying that the Yankees are injury plagued. Give me a break!!! They have a 12 trillion dollar payroll--get some backups!
"There are 162 of these games, so what's wrong with mixing it up at times?"
My feelings exactly...just don't do something like this during game 162 if it's as important as it has been in '07 and '08.
Neil,
Anyway you can check the IP address of emails you received from SNY employees and see if it matches up with this pro mets spammer?
the constant gushing over the mets broadcast team in the blog comments and live chats have always puzzled me.
If the mets need keith to drink wine and eat food all over the park to entertain their fans, they have big problems. i'm happy the yanks don't do anything that detracts from the only important thing: THE GAME.
The only bad thing about YES is Kim Jones. Another suspiciously loved person in among the commenters.
The Yankees detract from the game by having boring announcers who can't handle showing/telling it like it is when they're losing and putting the Yankees above God. The SNY team is 100 times better than the YES-men. Maybe having Keith drinking wine was a bit much, but it adds to the game when the analysts can comment from a different perspective and bring things to the analysis that they may not otherwise see. Plus, for those of us who know him from the broadcasts, we know Keith is very shy around the crowd, which is why it was fun to watch him in the CF area last night. They make the broadcast fun, informative, entertaining, and on the level at the same time.
I think sny is so desperate for any type of buzz and they keep trying to re-invent the wheel. i can't stand when gary cohen
> promotes
> what's coming up in the next half inning other than the next half
> inning. i
> think they try to create debate during the game and it's forced.
> just give me
> the damn game!
Thanks for doing my legwork again, Neil.
The SNY broadcasts are terrific because of how the three work together. With the trio & Burkhardt roving, they provide a non biased coverage of the game. That is, when Keith feels like working. Neil, do you ever see anyone get more time off then Keith Hernandez? It's almost as bad as when Rizzuto used to bolt in the 7th inning to beat the traffic. The problem with the Yankees broadcasts is..
1) Every announcer sounds the same. Generic and bland with similar voices.
2) They are all homers. They do not dare make any critical comments of the team or it's play, always choosing to blame it on other forces at work. Kay and Singleton are the worst offenders with Cone and Flaherty sounding like controlled puppets
