Syracuse reasserts Central New York lax supremacy

insidetitle_mlax.jpgTidy 18-hour work shift this Memorial Day - up and back to Foxborough, with an overtime NCAA lacrosse championship game sandwiched between drives up I-95.

Congratulations to the Syracuse Orangemen on yet another national title, aided significantly by an epic Cornell meltdown in the final minutes.

Newsday was all over the story, of course. We even provided journalistic balance by having Syracuse alum Bob Herzog write the game story and me write a column, focused mostly on Max Seibald of Hewlett and Cornell.

As I wrote, it was a good day for lacrosse in general and LI lax in particular.

Still . . . brutal loss for the Big Red. Is it hockey season yet?

(More later Tuesday on my excellent lacrosse adventure.)

A temporary setback for the SUNY sports pipeline?

So....
Since Cornell has entrenched itself in the national spotlight in collegiate sports, as brought to us by Neil Best, (LAX, Hockey, Hoops, amongst others) when are they gonna start releasing their graduation rates for Student athletes?
Cuz, as far as I can tell, they are hiding behind the Ivy League Iron Curtain that prevents them from releasing that kind of stuff.

Perhaps the Watchdog could do a little investigative reporting on this?

Here's a little tidbit I picked up on google:
As of 04/08/2009

Some comparisons between Duke and Cornell:

# of undergraduate students:
6394 Duke
13,510 Cornell

4-year graduation rates:
90% Duke (Duke was # 1 in the country, tied with Notre Dame and Georgetown)
84% Cornell (this ranks Cornell 7th out of the 8 Ivy colleges)

Statistically speaking, student athlete graduation rates are generally lower than the overall population.

Is that true for SUNY-Cornell?

C'mon Neil....

You've talked the talk for a long time here.
How did Cornell get so good in NCAA Athletics?

Ivy League?
or
I-b League?

"Come to Cornell and get an "IVY" League education AND a pro contract?"

Just wonderin....

There were a couple of highly questionable academic characters on the hockey team when I was there.

We're a sports factory, what can I say?

Terrible job by Cornell protecting the ball in the last minutes.

Looting and rioting in the vicinity of Grove Ave in the Brainy Borough has commenced.

Hard to believe anyone is attending Cornell to get that "Pro" lacrosse contract, or is skipping Duke to go to Cornell to play basketball, or OK, maybe they are going to Cornell for the Hockey contract - especially when the other schools have scholarships for athletics!!!! Not surprising to me that it is harder to graduate from Cornell than Duke!

"Epic Cornell Meltdown"? That's not fair...Syracuse outplayed them for the last 10 minutes of the game. Cornell tried to sit on a lead and deserved to lose.

PS

Yes I am....SU Alumni 98'

Please take a look at each of the Cornell and Syracuse squards and see how many are from NY State. Central NY by far, along with Long Island, are the premenient spots for Lacrosse. I am tired of Baltimore getting all the credit for being the epi-center of lax. Syracuse is the epi-center. Not only at the University level but the high school level as well. West Genny is a public school, the Gillmans, Loyolas and the like are all private. Secondly, wasn't the roots of the sport with the Iroquois Indians?

Time and Time again the legendary players and impact players come from this area West Genny, Carthage, Watertown, Irondequoit, Geneva High, Corchoran High. It is alive and well at all levels and it is tragic the Hall of Fame is not in Syracuse.

Please learn about the history of this sport, and stop spouting off HOW BIG LACROSSE is in the Virginia/Maryland area.

Badly need your help. I say luck is when an opportunity comes along, and you're prepared for it. Help me! Looking for sites on: Cheap hotels in thailand.
