Cablevision adds Big Ten; Penn State alums pleased

tr_paterno_getty.jpgBig news today for New York-area fans of the 11 big schools in the Big Ten:

Cablevision (which owns Newsday) has reached a carriage agreement with the Big Ten Network, which will be included in its iO TV Sports Pak effective this week.

(The Sports Pak carries an additional charge of $5.95 per month.)

The network expects to carry Penn State's first three games - including the one against Syracuse - and perhaps two more.

Games will be shown in standard and hi def.

The NHL Network, NBA TV and CBS College Sports also are on the Sports Pak.

Neil -- You're starting to worry me. You know that Verizon FiOS has the Big Ten Network in SD and HD. And it's not part of a special sports tier...in other words, no extra charge. I know you know this. Just like you know that Verizon FiOS TV has the NFL Network, and that's not in any special extra charge sports tier either.

On Verizon Fios do you need to pay an extra fee for the NHL Network?
If anyone knows please post. Thanks

Now we have Verizon flacks [possibly in the name of long-time VZ p-r guy John Bonomo] posting on this blog.
If you aren't under the microscope already, Neil, you are. And it's an electron microscope, too, powered by Verizon.

Brian G- Yes, you do - at least in the New York area (I think NY might put it in an upgraded tier because there are so many damn Regional Sports Networks that are included. Other areas might have it in basic). But NFL, MLB, and (I think) NBA are on the basic tier.

Step 1 toward bringing Rutgers into the Big Ten. The handwriting is on the wall for the tri-state area's lone school in a BCS conference.

Brian G -- There is no extra fee for the NHL Network on Verizon FiOS. Check out the channel lineup here....http://www22.verizon.com/Residential/FiOSTV/ChannelLineup/ChannelLineup.htm
