Nets still plan to break ground in Brooklyn this decade
En route to the Mets game Wednesday, I took a detour to the Sports Business Journal's Sports Facilities & Franchises '09 conference on Lexington Avenue.
There was a session involving several New York-area new-building execs.
Our John Jeansonne wrote here about the cautious optimism being expressed by representatives of the Mets, Jets/Giants and Nets, who insist they will break ground in Brooklyn this year.
Which, it turns out, they kind of have to if they ever are going to, according to this story from John Brennan of the Bergen Record.
I attended a session featuring Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek, who said of the notion of the Nets joining him in Newark: "We would certainly welcome them with open arms."
I had lunch with Jeansonne and a fellow from Wavecam, a newer version of the familiar Skycam. Unlike Skycam, Wavecam is installed permanently, avoiding the cost, hassle (and danger) of having crews install the system on a week-to-week basis.
Interesting. Seriously.

Just an FYI...
The paper John Brennan writes for is called The Record.
"Michael," I'm certain Neil knows that; I just think he's dumbing things down for his primarily Nassau and Suffolk-based audience
Michael: Edmund is right. I know it's technically The Record, which is based in Hackensack.
I still laugh at the thought of the Brooklyn Arena, and the fact that it isn't dead yet. I'd hate to see the Nets leave NJ, and Newark could be a great place for them, and Mr. Vanderbeek from the Devils would love their revenue and to say goodbye to the Meadowlands Arena.
This needs to die a quick death like the two West Side projects with the Jets and Yankees. To me it should be either Newark or doing what is so reasonable that is makes too much sense and get their arena in Queens. I still think Newark is the best since it means less bond-free subsidies from New Yorkers' pockets. The Nets blew their chances by thinking the Knicks could be taken in NY and picking a terrible location that was sure to drag for years.
The 10 Nets fans probably wish Vanderbeek was their owner instead of Ratface.
